Nowhere to Run
The dance was easy enough to follow, even Jezper could have done it! Daiya's mood was hardly dampened when she saw that only Brie had joined her in the line dance, the grin on her face was immovable. Her feet were not, and neither were the girl's arms and hands. She had to work a little to keep up with the song caller's ambitious pace, but pretty quick she managed to find the pattern of the song.
"Two hops this time!"
Daiya leapt forward, giddiness rising in her chest each time she did so. The song's tempo kept her heart pumping fast, the energy of the party only adding to her thrill. She kept glancing over at Brie beside her, grinning ear to ear as the two girls followed the footwork that the song demanded.
Over the sound of the music, Daiya told her friend, "I don't think I've had this much fun on a mission before, Brie! Beats shooting people."
"Definitely beats reading a holobook while going through hyperspace!"
There was nothing that could have removed Daiya's smile, but her eyes crinkled as she gave Brie a sidelong look. "Reading? Now I'm really glad I got you out to this party," the girl admitted, giggling for a moment at her introverted friend's choice of idle hobbies. Then she adopted a more serious tone, "Have you learned anything from Ahxel? Any dirt or juicy info?"
Brie's face turned colorful as she blushed. "Uhm… Yeah…" Daiya waited as her friend tried to put her thoughts to words. "Gosh... He wants to meet again... He wants my holonumber, but… I don’t know."
Daiya couldn't help but laugh again at Brie's answer. That wasn't what she meant, but it was good to know. "Okay, okay. First of all, absolutely give it to him, he's cute. But I mean the reason we're here, Brie! Trying to dig up dirt on the Cabrals, you know?"
"Oh…" Brie seemed to think for a second, as if the dance was taking all of her focus. "Oh! I almost forgot about that! No, not yet..." she said, slightly disappointed at herself for forgetting the true reason that they were here.
"Stay on target, Miss Bookworm," Daiya teased a warning to her friend. She didn't hear what Miss Bookworm said in response, for at that moment all she heard was the high-pitched screeching of one well-dressed birthday girl wondering where all her partygoers were heading.
Prompted to look, the girl spied more partiers peeling off, following a group of guests heading into the Cabral family's mansion. She found herself wearing an amused look, eyebrows high as she glanced from the guests, to an indignant Kasathé, to Brie. Her face fell as she noticed Jezper, still off to the side with Ahxel staying clear of the wild dance motions. He wore a dark expression, glancing nervously at his celebrated cousin and looking very much like he wanted to sprout wings and fly.
Daiya went over to the Arkanian boy, hoping her approach would prompt him to explain. When it didn't, she took his hand in hers and brought it up. His almond-shaped eyes blinked, as if noticing her for the first time, but Jezper didn't say anything until his date suggested, "You okay?"
Jezper gave her his full attention now, giving his head a slight shake. The boy's discomfort was easily apparent, in a way that it hadn't been when they were dancing or just talking before. Daiya felt a pang in her chest seeing Jezper so uncomfortable, and she gave his hand a squeeze. "How about we go inside? Looks like that's where all the 'cool kids' are going anyway."
She grinned again when Jezper gave her a little chuckle, and the girl found some light in those steel-blue eyes of his. He looked into hers, and Daiya felt a flutter in her chest when he spoke at last, "Yeah, good idea."
Daiya took the assertion as agreement, and pulled Jezper along towards the mansion. She threw her head back across her shoulder to call to Brie, "We're heading inside."
Turning back to her date for the day, Daiya wrapped Jezper's arm around hers as if he was the one escorting her through the dwindling crowd. The teen leaned her head against the boy's shoulder, and for a while she actually let him guide them into the house. This was his family home, after all.
And maybe she'd learn a little more about it once they were inside.
