Operation Silversaber: SJO v SE - FEEDBACK

Final couple of days for the invasion - well done for seeing it through, sticking to your guns and making an enjoyable experience for all.

If you have any arcs you want to finish or goals to accomplish, start to narrow them down so you can do what you need to do to count in pushing back the Sith and liberating Mirial!

If I can voice a frustration, I feel like I got taken out of the fight.

Darth Ananta engaged Kiriko. Luckily, I was reading all the posts in the thread because I wasn't tagged. I just happened across the one sentence in her post that referenced a white bear. That's fine and good and, even without any communication or being tagged, is ultimately how these things go.

Except there were delays in response (beyond 72 hours) and it appeared as though she handed off the encounter to Kyrel Ren.

Again, long delays. In fact, my reply to his post on 13 October was the last post. I spoke with him on Discord and still nothing.

It's a little hard to tell any story when the other side engages you and then simply stops replying.

[member="Kiriko"] - Understood. While Discord is a good option for coordinating, I would still recommend to post in the invasion OOC thread as well. This adds a bit of visibility to the issue, and opens up the doors for admins to help or for other players to come forward to join the story.

In these kind of situations, I would say that you could feel free to move on after your opponent has dropped off or failed to reply after a reasonable amount of time (especially after you have reached out). And always, feel free to come to any of the admins if you need some assistance, we're here to help!

Echoing this, it's generally accepted that it's perfectly fine to move on after a grace period (I think the norm is 48 hours). After all, invasions only last for so long. No sense in being tied down. Especially after you've reached out to your opponent oocly and got no response. Contacting someone in invasion ooc makes things visible and transparent.

[member="Kiriko"] What these two said really!

Communicate via Discord AND the OOC forum, and then just wait for a while. That's all you can do for "fair play" in these situations.

If nothing comes of it, as it happened to me after about a day and a half, then change your character's tactics and move onto another area, situation or conflict (they recieve an urgent com call, or whatever - make it up to pull you away).

That way you can keep writing and not lose momentum with your muse. :)

Well.

We have lost the invasion.

I am pretty shocked to be honest, and dissapointed. For me? No. For you all and the effort you made after the tough times we've had as you did so well.

Here is the feedback for you all:

Teamwork: Tie. Both sides showed differing strengths that brought them to a Tie in this category. The Sith did a better job of working together within their own faction, the vast majority of them sticking to a solid and cohesive story that gained momentum because of their solid, driven goal. The Jedi however, felt lacking in terms of their overall connectedness. They didn’t seem to have as focused a goal among themselves as the TSE and sometimes were lacking when it came to seeking the Sith out. However, the Jedi knocked it out of the park when it came to IC interactions with the Sith. There were many instances of excellent sportsmanship in duels, and the Jedi took all Sith AOE attacks as a whole faction. Due to the differing strengths of both factions, this came out as a tie.

Story: TSE. The Sith set up a narrative and they stuck to it, to great effect. The idea of Sith as benevolent protectors isn’t wholly original, but it’s refreshing in our environment. Whether it’s true or not, the Sith stuck to it and it was very steady throughout the entire invasion. The additional atmosphere of the zombie menace also added to the overall feel of the thread, and created depth beyond two factions who both think they’re in the right. The Jedi had several excellent sub-plots, but their overall narrative simply wasn’t as exciting and never really developed throughout the invasion.

OOC Drama: Tie. Both sides interacted politely. There was one report from the SJO’s side, but it did not cause any drama - was just expressing official concern.

Entertainment: TSE. Much for the same reasons as story, the Sith shined here. Their overall narrative was compelling, and the way individuals brought it in to their stories was great. The SJO had many writers who wrote excellent personal stories that kept us wanting to read, but as a whole it wasn’t as atmospheric or engaging as the Sith.

Effort: SJO. Post percentage was roughly half and half, and the vast majority of players from both sides were involved for the entire invasion. SJO’s performance after several consecutive invasions tips the scales in their favor

I'm sorry guys. I am really gutted for you all. I thought we had a chance at this. I just can't believe another loss for us.

Please comment and leave your view but, remember, keep it friendly please!

Honestly I'd like to know who judged the thread. At this point it's ridiculous. Sith as good guys when in actuality they've written their characters as anything but should have been taken into account. Or is a characters history prior to an invasion thread hull and void? I.E. jakes an arsehole to everyone and everything but becomes the pope in an invasion stating everyone loves him? Is that how it works?

We fought well, and I had a really good time, but I honestly expected this loss. Mirial wasn't a good planet to invade as 'liberators' considering it's been beaten to a pulp by now and we've never helped them before, and I think our narrative was patchy in that aspect overall. If we had gone in with clear helping-people-centric objectives and stuck to a clear story, I reckon we could've won.

Anyhow, these are just my two cents. I do write with TSE, so folks are welcome to take it with a grain of salt.

Next time I'd reckon planning well in advance a general theme and assigning teams to write the theme.

This. Coordination and a cohesive narrative are essential. TSE planned its strategy in advance (and provided objectives for its members). Invasions are work and require planning before and while they take place. Doing well fighting in duels and reacting to your opponent is also factor, though one among several. Without putting too fine a point on it, more Masters in the field would have probably helped when it comes to duelling.

One of the ways SJO could have undermined TSE's 'we're the protectors' narrative would have been uncovering evidence that it was the Sith who summoned the zombies (this happened in the TSE-Dom invasion, the alt I used as a TSE ally was involved). Besides, the Sith's leader is the genocidaire-in-chief.

Invasion judging was simpler when all you had to do is win enough duels. :D

Do, or do not. There is no try.
The Sith narrative didn't make a whole lot of sense in my opinion. All these conquerors and butchers suddenly started to portray themselves as poor victims of Jedi aggression. While solid propaganda fuel, it would have been a good idea to start it after the invasion. Throughout the thread, I got the feeling Sith have opted to collectively cry about the evil Jedi oppressors instead of defending the planet or striking back. It was really forced with most Sith characters and clearly went against their previously established personalities.

Not what I'd call consistent narrative.

While we had a few antics on our side, overall the Silver Jedi have remained consistent to their established faction goals and IC characterisation. The same just cannot be said for the SE - and I am disappointed to see that despite the awful godmoding and sometimes very sub-par writing on the SE side, they have won the story. Was it solely because they portrayed themselves as victims and defenders of the innocents? That narrative fell apart when Ananta Wave of Darkness'd the capital.

Overall, while I enjoyed the story with Liuna and Jartris, the story on SE side was waaaay too influenced by OOC directives for my tastes.

Speaking as someone who rped on the Sith side, I lampshaded the propaganda a lot because my character, Enyo Typhos, was part of the team that summoned the zombies in the first place.

No reason for a nihilistic, amoral cyborg to pretend to care about the natives or be their protector (beyond later offering 'medical aid' that's about turning them into obedient cyborgs). Especially since she's not governing them, which TSE admittedly is.

Thank you all for your views, comments and feedback. It's stored in my vault for the future progression of what we do and how we do it. :)

I'm a bit late to this, but I wanted sit back and mull over the invasion and come at this with a more objective eye.

I think we have shown some signficant improvement from Ossus, but we're still hampered by the lack of coordination during the course of invasions. Even going into it, while we had ideas what we going to do, I was a bit irked seeing so many people on our side split off to do their own thing, even after they were asked to team up with others. Off the top of my head, there's at least a couple subplots that would have been better suited being written as neutral third parties. Some of our writers got so caught up in writing their own stories that they forgot that this is supposed to be a group showing and a team effort.

On the complaints about the TSE's narrative. While outside the invasion, we know how certain characters on TSE's side really are, we also could have done a better job pointing out these inconsistencies in the thread. We can't expect the RPJ judging the invasions to know the backstories of everyone participating, so we should treat the space as a blank canvas and bring our own evidence with us. We should also try to be more assertive in establishing our own narrative and keep from getting rattled by our opponents while still acknowledging their actions (a tough balance I know).

Finally, we can be more well rounded in our approach. While I don't agree that we needed to have this be wholly some sort of invasion with a humanitarian bent (this is Star Wars, not Star Peace), we could do more to accommodate our vared writer base and make use of their talents. More non-volent objectives, maybe more diplomacy and political intrigue, information campaigns, etc. In the future this is an area I'm going to focus on more.

Overall it just felt like SJO writers had split up to write their own stories with no clear direction or objective. Assign teams and objectives based on characters and writers strengths and weaknesses.

And

Have a narrative/background story going in. Have everyone contribute to that overall plot arc.
