Proposal: Prefixes In Species Forum

I'm wondering if it might be worth adding in four prefixes to the Species forum to replace the simple "Approved", to quickly categorise it at a glance; what I'm proposing is splitting it into our three sapient/sentient groupings (Non, Semi and Sentient/Sapient) and one for flora. This way if someone is looking for a player made species to play it can be done quickly.

Yes/No? I'd like to hear everyone's view, not just the Species Judges.

I don't know much about the last night's debate, but I would say since in Wookieepedia it's called sentience, why shouldn't it be referred as "Sentience"?

EDIT: OK, now that I know what happened, I can say to me it would be logical to call it Sapience. But I really don't understand why it was changed at all as in Star Wars canon, it's Sentience, not Sapience...

Also, not all sapient species are available to be played as PCs. Some, such as the Withered Smoke, are NPC only, or are unique submissions for single characters, only.

"In real-world usage, sentience refers to the capacity to feel sensations, such as pain; thus, most animals are sentient. In English, a more correct term for a being with the capacity for intelligent thought would be sapient or sophont. Star Wars usage follows the science-fiction convention of including intelligence as a defining characteristic of sentience.

Sentient comes from the Latin word sentire, meaning "to feel, to realize."

Sentience is not restricted to organic species and droids, despite the common belief; an example of this is Yuuzhan'tar, a sentient planet."

People thought it would be better if we used the "right" word for talking about one's intelligence. But I really don't understand why we are breaking canon... >.>

We could easily do the three sapient prefixes, a fauna, personal and NPC tag - that amount is nothing compared to how the Tech/Starship categorisation can get. NPC should only be used for unplayable species which are sentient though.

This, basically, yes. Also, the NPC tag as per the parameters that [member="Lady Kyros"] suggested is precisely how I would intend for it to be used.

Totally cool, not what I was asking about though. I meant when you edit a topic's title to include a prefix, they're all jumbled around with submission status prefixes mixed into the faction tags. I was just wondering if it could be easily organized since we're adding even more. It's not an issue, it'd just be nice to have them grouped by type.

I'm a huge fan of using prefixes as they're meant to be used, to separate related content.

Be careful though. Don't prefix everything off the bat, or I'll get wary and we'll find ourselves in the same place we found ourselves with the Rank Titles when we made too many to please ourselves & the members.

With that said, I thoroughly enjoy this idea and wish to see it be implemented.
