[Question] Switching lightsabers?

We all have demons. I've just decided to feed mine
The title is a terrible foreshadower for my question, but no one has ever accused me of writing good headlines.

Anyway.

My character knows Shii-Cho or whatever the heck that lightsaber form is. She has, since joining the Jedi Order (well, actually, a little bit after -- they didn't trust her with one right off the bat), only used a normal, run-of-the-mill lightsaber.

But soon, soon she shall have a saberstaff (a lightsaber like Satele Shan's and Darth Maul's). I'm guessing, however, that before I have a thread where she can use it without chopping off her leg (as amusing as that would be), she must first have a thread where she actually learns how to use it in regards to Shii-Cho.

Am I right or wrong?

All up to you. No real rule that I'm aware of, stating anything... But it helps to make it a bit more fluid if you've got something to back it up with, instead of just popping in with a saber staff and going against Sith.

If that's your target.

That's only a rule for non-Force Users, though it is definitely quality development for one's growing character and is an opportunity I would not pass up. Everyone handwaves the shiny things but nobody realizes that the "work" is actually supposed to be the fun part. :)
