Lightsabers for droids?

Fasalin said:
Lucas always said that the lightsabers were very heavy, rather than weightless as you'd imagine they would be. That was the stated reason for the style of fighting in the first film, though Alec Guinness' advanced age probably had more to do with it. Having said that, it seems that the idea was abandoned from Empire onwards, since the fights after that were more like fencing than than the Samurai-esque style of the first duel.
That clip is taken out of context. The weight of the blade is because the hilt is nearly over 1 KG, which is the weight of a normal sized sword, with a weightless blade attached. Imagine holding something that heavy with something that weighs almost nothing attached to it which can literally cut right through pretty much everything. If you look at it that way, you understand you need to be more stiff as though you were holding something heavier. The idea was Luke needed to be careful with the lightsaber because he was so unskilled, the Obi-Wan vs Vader scene was more in-line with his passive, defensive, style of combat than the heavy thing.

That, and they used real props, which weighed a bit.

Did someone just call one of the prequel Star Wars movies good?
RELATIVELY good. I think that Revenge of the Sith was a good movie and I enjoyed it. That doesn't mean I feel that it compares to the originals, which are collectively my favourite movies.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I think I will try to get hold of a lightsaber, probably do a dev thread on one of the worlds where Sith and Jedi have come in conflict recently and salvage some parts.

As for learning I think going with the idea of watching and learning as well as being taught would be best, though the concept of finding proxy sounds fun!

But again, thank you everyone.

Sorry to ninja you - and you may already have covered this - but just in case.

:)

A saber is created by using the Force. So finding existing and working sabers will be fine. But an NFU can't 'create' a saber in the traditional sense. Nor would the crystal be attuned to you, in the way it is to a Jedi or Sith that creates their saber. But that is a minor point.

Eh no problem, need to know information anyways!

But I did not realize that a NFU could not construct a lightsaber. I thought in one of the those Clone Wars episodes a Jedi droid made a ligthsaber to show for some padawans. I keep forgetting his name, but it was David Tennant playing him.

I agree - it's a contentious issue. We need a real Jedi to ask LOL

Canon references in the books invariably have the Jedi/Sith meditate over the crystal.

Is the droid you reference Huyang? He 'guided' Jedi as opposed to do the construction for them. This quote puts it nicely IMHO:

Padawan - "It's not finished. I never finished it. I've done everything right, but it won't work!"

Huyang - "You must trust that the components that form your lightsaber are meant to be together. There is no other way. It is the Force that binds them."

Don't look at me, I have only one character who is really Force sensitive and he kinda lost the lightsaber he started with.

Ah yes I think that was the one.

Very good point. I will grant that most of the evidence I have seen has pointed in the very direction you are speaking.

Okay I found the episode now that you gave a name and I found the point that I was thinking about. The droid does build a lightsaber, though I think he left out the crystal and he never activated it. So I guess that he didn't really make a working lightsaber, though he built a good prop. haha

Here is the scene:
