Sorel Crieff

Ready are you? What know you of ready?
Sorel laughed. Softly at first and then much louder. She earned the swift rebuke of a librarian and she closed her mouth but the corners of it kept curling upwards.

“I fly an X-wing, that’s for sure. And in truth, I’ve never had to lift one using Telekinesis. Could I? I’m not sure. Not that I doubt the Force, so I would never suggest I would try. I would do. If nothing happens, I simply need to practise more. That is always my approach. Every day I develop. Even now.”

“And talking of development, other than saber training, is there something I can assist in helping you learn?”

Ery'lyn was pleasantly taken aback at Sorel's laughter, grinning widely. She was used to people reacting poorly to her sense of humor, which was more of a fluent grasp of sarcastic comments than anything else. Luckily, she seemed to have met someone who appreciated it, at least when it wasn't aimed directly at her.

"Even as a Master you practice?" She supposed it made sense, athletes and scholars never stopped training or studying despite reaching recognition. Why would a Jedi master be any different. "Huh, makes sense."

"I'm fairly useless at anything except that..." She motioned to the book they'd practiced with, "And the healing I am working on with master Cathbodua. I'm not sure what else I need to know, to be honest." She shrugged. Before she found herself with the Silver Jedi she'd never given pause to think about what skills a Jedi would need. And now she found herself overwhelmed with the possibilities before her.

"Do you have any suggestions? You mentioned the cadences earlier, are they mostly for Telekinesis?"

Sorel nodded as Ery asked the question. “It is a tenet of the Jedi Code that we never stop learning. And that does not always mean new things. Perfecting what we already know is a lifetime occupation. I practise with a saber daily. It is the one thing I spend more time on than any other, apart from sleep – although some days it actually is my main focus.”

“Being good is never a bad thing. But to truly master something? It takes thousands of hours. Quite literally thousands. Which is why I do not look to learn too many new abilities. It takes all my time to keep the ones I have at a standard.”

“And the cadences are entirely useful for Telekinesis. To be able to control objects with precision is never a bad ability to have. And it develops your Force Sense.”

“Now I’m sure that in the course of your studies you will be taught the basics – like Push and Pull and Speed, ones like that. Others to consider as generic yet entirely useful include the various forms of Meditation and Force Sight, and I can help you with both. The latter is invariably practical – and as a Healer it would even help you understand how injured someone is. So not a bad tool to have in the bag.”

Ery smiled ruefully at the thought of meditation. "Do you ever just...fall asleep when you are tying to meditate?" She laughed before she could stop herself, the image of a stereotypical Jedi Master nodding off in the middle of such an exercise. She clapped a hand over her mouth and snorted as the same librarian from earlier admonished her for the noise. Great, she was already making enemies of the library staff and it was only her first visit.

She nodded thoughtfully in agreement. "Force sight seems pretty self-explanatory, in terms of being useful I mean." She was fairly certain her cheeks were permanently red with an embarrassed blush at this point. If she could manage to make it through one sentence without putting her foot in her mouth, she'd be pleasantly surprised. She sighed but did not apologize again, instead, she paved on with her thoughts.

"I guess I just don't understand how meditation can help for anything other than just....relieving stress." It was one trait she'd always shared with her sister, the inability to do nothing. But unlike her sister, who ached for physical activity and movement, Ery was content with time to study a manuscript or holo. She was even happy to write on her own, but that was a secret she kept to herself. Her poems were private and would stay that way.

"I would be honored if you would instruct me in both. I trust your judgement in their usefulness."

Sorel laughed softly and her gaze quite literally dared the librarian to rebuke her. “Yes, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In deep meditation, you disconnect from the outside world and time is not measurable. It would be difficult to differentiate that from sleep. So, as long as you’re connected to the Force during the exercise, I’m sure it doesn’t matter if you believe you’ve dropped off.”

“Force Sight has many uses – and the more you use it, the more becomes available for you to use. Seeing in the dark, seeing through walls, seeing the difference between living and non-living, seeing Force auras and even detecting someone’s health. Most accept it’s a useful technique.”

“But its powers are nothing compared to what is possible with meditation. You can close your mind to Force invasion. You can recharge your health and Force powers. You can solve complex problems without having to concentrate. You can defend yourself without conscious thought, you can perform complicated tasks whilst thinking of a different subject. You can increase your connection to the Force for a period of time. And abilities like Force Valor and Battle Meditation are based upon the technique. Now who would say those are just about stress relief?”

Sorel’s demeanour suggested she was neither offended by the Padawan’s comments, nor was she surprised. Meditation was so often overlooked by Padawans. “And I’d be delighted to show you, and we can start with Force Sight. Tomorrow in fact, first thing. I’ll send you a message with an exact time and location.”
