Three down, a half dozen or more to go.

Caelan turned towards them, bringing his lightsaber up into a ready position as two started towards him. But then, shouts from one of them drew them back and they began to retreat. Having no interest in fighting when it was no longer necessary, he let them do so. He did, however, follow them at a safe distance to make sure they were heading back to their ships and not trying to find an alternate means of getting to the passengers. If they were doing that, he would cut them down.

But they retreated to their ship and pulled away. This created a vacuum in that area of the transport, which nearly sucked him out, but he cut a slab of metal from an interior bulkhead and threw it at the hole before using his lightsaber to weld the two together. Not perfect, but it would keep them from losing air out into space.

He was about to turn around and head back when he suddenly heard something impact the outside of the ship. Not a laser blast or torpedo, but something had impacted the outer hull. Then another did, and he started to hear the outer hull straining before noticing some buckling down the corridor from him. Moment later, a whole section of the outer hull ripped away and he ran backwards, slapping shut a door to seal off the corridor before anything worse happened.

In haste he ran back towards where Valery was, running through the room of frightened passengers, and into the room with her. It was full of gas, but he drew on the Force and used it to push it away, back down the corridor towards where the attackers were fleeing.

"They're using harpoons to tear apart the ship!" he shouted at her. "We have to do something to stop them!"

Valery's face hardened as Caelan's words sunk in, her gaze flickering toward the bulkhead as another harpoon impacted the ship. The sound of metal groaning under strain echoed ominously through the vessel. Time was slipping away, and the situation was growing direr by the second.

"We won't be able to save this ship," Valery said grimly, her voice carrying both urgency and calm resolve. "We need to evacuate the passengers now. Get them to the escape pods." She glanced at Caelan, her tone leaving no room for doubt. "You'll lead them. Guide them to safety."

The ship shuddered violently, emphasizing her point. She turned back to Caelan. "Once they're away, I'll join you, but I'm heading to the breached sections first. I need to sever those harpoons and buy us more time."

Without waiting for an argument, Valery moved quickly, leading Caelan toward the main corridor where the evac routes branched out. The crowd of frightened passengers stumbled toward the pods, faces pale but filled with determination.

"Yes, Master," he said before returning and gathering those still alive.

They moved to the escape shafts that lead to the pods and Caelan quickly ushered people into them. They were few in number at this point, only the ones that had been in the room with himself and Valery. The escape pods were full, but Caelan didn't dare try and shove himself into one and make it dangerous for those inside of it. Instead, he issues instructions for them to launch the pods, leaving himself and Valery stranded inside of the derelict ship.

But he did have an idea. Valery had pretty much killed all of the marauders she'd been facing. Curious, he tracked to where they had entered. While he found one bulkhead collapsed where a shuttle had been used to escape, he found another hole in the exterior of the ship that was not open to vacuum. Poking his head in, he did a quick check to see if anyone was inside, but he didn't see anyone, so he climbed in.

The sound of tapping greeted him, and he looked down to see a small droid that bounced skittishly from one foot to the next.

"Hello," Caelan said, trying to move past it.

It jumped back in front of him, then half ran away, and then returned.

"I need this ship to escape and to save the others that are. Can I please get by?"

The droid beeped and whirred at him and Caelan frowned.

"I don't understand. You want me to but can't let me?"

Instantly a blaster bolt whizzed past him, coming from the eye of the droid that looked like a holoprojector. Caelan was fortunate that it had missed, but either way, he quickly grabbed the little droid and faced him away.

"Sorry. Can't have you doing that right now."

He shoved the droid into a compartment and sealed him in before heading towards the cockpit. Everything was in order and the ship was empty except for the droid. The droid didn't seem bad. There was something off about it. That's why he didn't destroy it. Plus it was easy enough to shove it away and lock it up for the moment where it couldn't cause any trouble.

Caelan did spot trouble outside, though. A fighter was lining itself up for another harpoon shot and two other shuttles were nearby. He looked around before spotting the controls for the ships weapons systems, and targeted them at the opposing craft. The vessel was armed with torpedoes and laser cannons from what he could tell. He fired torpedoes at the two shuttles, with two clear impacts, though neither ship was torn apart. The one fighter he could see, and he could tell from the scanners there were at least two more, was busy with its harpoon attached and unable to fire at him, so he turned the laser cannons on it and peppered it with repeated fire until it exploded in a cloud of debris.

He hated doing it. Killing people made him sick to his stomach. But he had to in order to keep them from going after the escape pods, or killing him and Valery. He hoped she was having luck.

Valery pushed through the crumbling corridors, her boots pounding against the deck as the ship groaned under the strain of its multiple breaches. The air was thick with smoke and the acrid scent of burning metal, but she kept her focus sharp. Each second counted—every harpoon severed meant another moment bought for the evacuees.

She reached the first harpoon, its thick cables vibrating under the tension of the enemy ship still pulling against it. Without hesitation, Valery ignited her lightsaber, the violet blade hissing to life. With two precise slashes, she cut through the cables, and the harpoon groaned as it lost its grip on the ship's hull. The sudden release sent a shudder through the vessel, but she was already moving.

The second harpoon was buried deeper, its metal claws ripping through bulkheads and conduits. Marauders guarded this one, but Valery approached without slowing. Her lightsaber became a blur as she deflected a volley of blaster fire, closing the distance with terrifying speed. Within moments, the marauders were disarmed and incapacitated, their weapons clattering uselessly to the floor.

Valery turned her attention to the harpoon, severing its connection with a single, decisive cut. Sparks flew, and the ship trembled as the tension released, but she remained steady. Her breath came in controlled bursts, her mind focused on the task at hand.

The ship groaned again, louder this time, as another harpoon embedded itself further down the corridor. Valery didn't hesitate. She sprinted toward it, weaving through the wreckage and leaning on the Force to keep her balance as the vessel continued to destabilize. Her lightsaber hummed with purpose, ready to cut another down.

It wouldn't be enough to save the ship, but she could buy Caelan some time.

Whatever she was doing, it was causing a shift in the ship. Maybe it was because they were pulling on a ship that wasn't pulling back against them, he didn't know, but the ship was starting to roll. With artificial gravity, it didn't matter much to him, but it did mean that he was starting to drift around to where he would be able to target whatever was still shooting at them. Eventually.

Somewhere back behind him, that little droid was beeping up a storm, trying to get out of the locker he'd shoved it in.

"I know, I know!" he called back to it. "But right now isn't the time for me to mess with you. We can fix you later!"

The ship continued to spin and he did his best to utilize the targeting computer to keep the weapons on the thing ready. As soon as one of the enemy ships appeared on screen, he opened fire on it, peppering it with weapons fire until it went up in a ball of flames, or at least got sent spinning out of control away from them. He didn't care which outcome it received as long as it was not shooting at them or the escape pods. They needed the people to get away safely.

Another one came into view and he blasted it as well. That only left one more and it must have realized it was the last one because it quickly started to fly away and then jumped to hyperspace. He sighed in relief, sitting back in the seat. That was a lot to deal with. Killing, cutting people up like he had, was not something he enjoyed doing. He closed his eyes and tried to work on calming himself down.

Valery severed the final harpoon with a decisive slash, her lightsaber cutting through the thick cables like a hot knife through durasteel. The ship lurched violently as it freed itself from the last tether, the enemy's grip finally broken. She deactivated her blade, the violet glow vanishing into the hilt, and glanced around. The once-functional corridor was now a mess of sparking wires and twisted metal, but her mission here was complete.

The ship's groans grew louder, its structure barely holding under the strain of multiple breaches. Time was running out.

She turned on her heel and sprinted back through the ruined corridors, her boots pounding against the unstable deck. Smoke and debris filled the air, but she navigated it with ease, leaning into the Force to guide her steps. Each turn brought her closer to Caelan, and as she rounded the last corner, she saw him in the cockpit, his hands still on the controls.

"Caelan!" Valery called out, her voice cutting through the chaos. She reached him in moments, her face flushed from exertion but her expression determined. "It's time to go. We've done all we can."

Her amber eyes flicked to the viewport, catching sight of the last enemy ship jumping to hyperspace. A brief moment of relief washed over her — it meant their escape pods were safe.

"Come on," she urged, grabbing his arm gently but firmly. "There's an escape shuttle nearby. We need to move, now."

"Then let's just take this thing? I don't want to risk going back in there and getting crushed as the ship falls apart," he said, motioning to the Nihil shuttle they were inside of.

The little droid was busy slamming its way around the container it was trapped in. He heard one or two shots pop off, but it didn't make it through the housing, which was good. He didn't particularly want blaster bolts poking holes inside of the transport. But he did jump up and run back to seal off the attachment point between them and the derelict transport vessel. Might not be someone who could fly a ship himself, but at least he could operate parts of it.

"Uh, can you fly?"

The door to the locker where the droid was half way opened and he kicked it back closed with his foot.

"Stop it," he said to the droid. "I told you to stay in there."

It beeped angrily at him.

"I don't care. You're broken and we can't deal with that right now."

It beeped once at him, a heft cuss word, but then went quiet. Looking back at Val, he motioned to the container.

"Found him in here. Seemed nice and then tried to shoot me. Locked him in there for now. Also, we should probably call for help to pick up the escape pods."

Valery's amber eyes flicked to the Nihil shuttle around them, her mind already calculating their odds of survival. It wasn't an ideal escape vehicle — nothing about the Nihil was ideal — but it was functional, and with the ship collapsing around them, time was not on their side.

She raised an eyebrow at Caelan's exchange with the droid, a faint smirk tugging at her lips despite the tension of the moment. "You've made a friend, I see," she teased lightly, though her tone was strained with urgency. "But I agree — this shuttle will do for now. I can fly it."

Valery moved swiftly to the pilot's seat, her hands already working over the controls with practiced precision. The ship's systems groaned in protest, but after a few adjustments and a sharp flick of a few switches, the engines roared to life. "It's holding together," she muttered, half to herself, as she scanned the instruments. "Barely."

Valery then sent out a quick signal to the escape pods, her voice calm but commanding. "This is Jedi Master Valery Noble. We're commandeering a shuttle and will call for recovery teams to pick you up once we're safe. Hold tight."

She glanced at Caelan again, her expression softening slightly despite the chaos. "Once we're clear, we'll deal with your trigger-happy droid. Let's just hope he doesn't have friends hiding somewhere on this ship."

Her hands tightened on the controls as the shuttle shook, breaking free from the debris. "Brace yourself," she said, her voice sharp with focus. "This might get rough."

"He did seem nice until he tried to shoot me," Caelan said with a shrug.

But he moved away from the locker and settled into one of the other seats, strapping himself in. He wasn't worried about her flying; he was worried about all of the debris and the state of the vessel they were flying in. These were not very nice ships, and, frankly, if they'd had time to make it back to something else he would have been happy for it. But it just seemed far too dangerous to go racing back through the derelict transport.

She kicked the engines in, and the ship started to vibrate to the point Caelan hoped it didn't shake itself apart around them. These marauders, whoever they were, should invest in better ships if they're going to do this kind of work. They'd probably have a better time of it.

The ship shook as she pulled away and piloted them through the debris field. Part of that was his own doing, but if he hadn't shot the other ships up they'd probably both be dead, and most of the escape pods would likely have been destroyed as well. He hated having done it, but what was necessary didn't mean easy. The weight of taking a life was something that would probably always hang about him. He never wanted to be like what he'd seen from the others on Tython, so willing to kill as if it didn't bother them.

"Thing might shake us to death before we make it through this," he commented.

The droid beeped in despair and Caelan actually felt bad for it. Maybe they could fix it together when they were free of the debris field, like Master Noble had said.

"You're safe in there. Just stay in. Master Noble will get us through this."

Valery's hands gripped the controls with practiced confidence, though the shaking of the Nihil shuttle made it feel like she was wrestling with a wild beast rather than piloting a ship. The vibrations rattled through the cabin, and a particularly harsh jolt made her teeth clench. She cast a quick glance at Caelan, his steady presence an odd comfort amidst the chaos.

"Most droids that take a shot at a Jedi don't end up making it." She cut her gaze briefly to the locker where the droid was confined, as if the little troublemaker could somehow hear her. "Let's hope he appreciates it."

The shuttle lurched violently as another piece of debris scraped along the hull, and Valery's focus snapped back to the viewport. Her amber eyes scanned the field of jagged metal and wreckage, her fingers dancing over the controls as she maneuvered the ship with precision. "It's holding," she muttered, though it sounded more like a reminder to herself than anything.

At Caelan's comment about the ship shaking them to death, she couldn't help but laugh softly, though her tone carried an edge of determination. "It won't. I've flown worse. This one might actually have some charm left in it." Her words were dry, but her confident demeanor seemed to lighten the oppressive tension in the cabin.

Her gaze returned to the debris field, and her hands tightened on the controls. With a deep breath, she drew on the Force, letting it heighten her reflexes and sharpen her senses. The chaotic field ahead seemed to slow, her movements precise and calculated as she guided the shuttle through the gaps.

Moments later, the last of the debris cleared, and the starry void of open space stretched out before them. The tension in her shoulders eased slightly, though her focus remained sharp as she stabilized the shuttle.

"See?" she said with a slight grin, glancing back at Caelan. "Told you I'd get us through. Now let's find somewhere to set this down and deal with your new friend properly."

"I don't believe he wanted to," Caelan said as he was nearly bounced out of his seat. "He has bad programming. It's made him all... twitchy."

They bounced and jolted their way through space. The whole time he might have looked calm, trusting in the piloting skills of Master Noble, but inside he was praying that they didn't come apart and his last moments of life were on a floating bucket of bolts. Not for his own sake. If he died, then he died, but he was definitely worried about what would become of his people if no one was left to fight for them. What would happen to them? He didn't want to think about it.

Fortunately, he didn't need to. It wasn't long before they exited the debris field, and the ship began to settle into a more normal flight rhythm. That still involved more shaking than it should, but at least they weren't going to come apart at the seams. And when she said something about landing somewhere, he pulled up the local start charts.

"Here, Master," he said, pointing out a planet. "Ruusan is the closest planet."

He didn't know anything about it, but it was close and they were better going somewhere outside of one of the major galactic governments, especially in a ship stolen from marauders. Go to the wrong place and they'd end up getting shot down before they even had a chance to hail them and tell them they were Jedi. Wouldn't that be great? He got the Grandmaster of the Jedi and himself killed on a stupid mission to get a lightsaber crystal. What a legacy that would be.

"Don't know much about it, though. This information is... useless. All it says is low value."

Valery chuckled softly, her hands still steady on the controls as she listened to Caelan's assessment of the droid. It was still lucky that it hadn't been turned into scrap.

She glanced at the star chart Caelan had pulled up, her amber eyes narrowing slightly as she focused on the location he indicated. "Ruusan..." she murmured, her tone thoughtful. The name tugged at the edges of her memory. While the chart labeled it as low value, she knew it carried historical significance to the Jedi — a place of ancient battles and deep connection to the Force.

"It's not just any planet," Valery said, her tone carrying a hint of intrigue. "Ruusan is steeped in history. There's a strong connection to the Force there, though it's been quiet for a long time. It might not be bustling with life or resources, but it's far enough off the beaten path to suit our needs."

Her fingers danced over the controls, plotting a course for the planet. The ship groaned slightly in protest, but Valery coaxed it forward with the same confidence she'd used to navigate the debris field. "And low value sounds perfect for keeping this stolen heap off anyone's radar. Let's head there."

With that, she guided the shuttle toward Ruusan, the stars stretching into streaks of light as they jumped to hyperspace.

"Unless it's so low value they've got a base there," he said, given the proximity to where they were attacked.

He hoped that wasn't the case. It did seem remote. If the world was as steeped in history as Master Noble said, it seemed unlikely they would choose it as a base of operations for fear of having Jedi stumble across them when they least expected it. Or maybe they would do that on purpose in order to lure them in? He didn't know. Didn't really want to know. It seemed unlikely. They'd probably be alright in heading there. At the very least they'd be on land and not in a flying bucket of barely held together metal.

The droid beeped at them and he sighed in relief.

"The droid says they don't have anything there. Sounds like the more sincere side. He didn't cuss at me this time."

Part of him couldn't help but smirk a little bit at that. If nothing else, the little droid provided some levity that otherwise didn't exist in the situation. With them being attacked, and people floating in space in escape pods, it was hard to think of good things. But, he did feel better knowing that they wouldn't run into the marauders again so soon.

"Think we can get a new ship there? I don't fancy flying to Hurikane in this thing. Don't think we'd make it."

Valery chuckled softly at Caelan's remark about the droid, her fingers tapping idly on the console as they cruised through hyperspace. "Well, if it's not cussing at you, that's definitely a step in the right direction," she quipped, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. The levity was a welcome reprieve from the tension that had been weighing on them since their encounter with the marauders.

Her gaze flicked to Caelan as he voiced his concerns about the ship. "A new ship?" she echoed thoughtfully. "Ruusan isn't exactly known for its starship markets, but it's possible we might find something to trade or repair with. At the very least, we can probably fix this thing up enough to get us to Hurikane in one piece."

Valery leaned back slightly, her amber eyes reflecting the streaking stars of hyperspace. "And who knows? Ruusan might surprise us. It's an old world with a deep connection to the Force. Sometimes places like that have a way of providing exactly what you need, even if it's not in the way you expect."

She glanced at him again, her expression softening. "We'll figure it out. Worst case, we patch this heap up and limp along a little longer."

Her tone was calm and confident, a quiet assurance that, no matter what, they'd make it through this together.

He couldn't help but smile when she said it was good that the droid wasn't cussing at him anymore. It was a bit lighthearted, and needed after what they'd been through. He thought about letting the droid out then, but given it had seemed nice up until it shot at him, well, he didn't want to take the risk until they were firmly on the ground and not at risk of having a hole shot through the hull and ending up in explosive decompression, or sucked into space for an agonizing death.

"Well, if we can't get a new ship, a mechanic would be nice."

One downside of who he was: he knew next to nothing about flying or repairing ships. Frankly, without the Force he'd never have been able to shoot down the ships that had been attacking them earlier. His family had pilots that flew them around when they needed to go anywhere. It wasn't a necessary skill of theirs. He did think he was going to work on changing that, though.

"You seem to know a lot about Ruusan. Have you been there before? I'd never even heard of it."

By now he wasn't feeling all that desperate. She had a firm handle of things and did seem to know what she was doing. He expected nothing less from the grandmaster of the Order. So when she smiled at him he smiled back.

"I'm glad I wasn't alone when this happened. I needed your help with this."

Valery's smirk softened into a warm smile as she listened to Caelan, her fingers still resting lightly on the console. His remark about needing a mechanic drew a soft chuckle from her. "I think we both could use one," she admitted, glancing at the faintly flickering readouts on the ship's dashboard.

When he mentioned Ruusan, her gaze shifted to the streaking stars of hyperspace, her expression thoughtful. "I've not been there before," she said, her tone carrying a note of nostalgia. "But Ruusan has a lot of history that I learned about when I was attending classes as a Padawan." She paused, a faint shadow crossing her face as she reflected on the weight of the past.

Her amber eyes flicked back to him, and she smiled again. "I think you'll like it, even if we're just there for repairs."

His words about not being alone brought a warmth to her chest, and she reached out to rest a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Glad I was there to help." she said softly, her gaze steady. "And whatever happens next, we'll face it together. That's what being Jedi is about — we support each other."

The hum of the engines filled the space between them as Valery let her words settle, her calm confidence a steady anchor in the uncertainty of their journey.

He nodded at what she said about Jedi supporting one another. She was right. Nothing was more important for them than sticking together when everything got difficult. It was easy to think one capable of doing more than one could in certain situations, especially taking into account their connectively to the Force. Overconfidence was almost as dangerous to a Jedi as fear was. He was grateful that he no longer felt the need to give into fear after what he'd been through.

The rest of their flight to Ruusan was uneventful except for the occasional chirping from the droid, whose name he had determined was Fate. It went back and forth between being angry at them and just wanting to be fixed. Clearly they had screwed the poor guy up something fierce with whatever they had done to him. He'd never heard of a recon droid having a blaster eye either.

When they did land on Ruusan, he'd been surprised to see the world was seemingly teeming with various biomes, and yet didn't seem to have a lot of settled life on it. According to the rudimentary scans he could do of the world, there were only a small handful of settlements, probably just little local groups trying to survive away from the hustle and bustle of the galaxy as a whole. He figured she'd been right that they weren't going to be finding a new ship for sale.

"Well, we made it in one piece," he said, turning his chair about to face the locker the droid was in. "Now what do we do about Fate? He's kind of dangerous even if he is only half interested in killing us."

He liked droids, and he knew enough to understand what they said, but he was no mechanic.

"Prefer not to survive all of that only to get shot in the face by a droid."

Valery chuckled softly at Caelan's comment, her amber eyes glinting with amusement as she unbuckled herself from her seat. "Yeah, I'd rather not have that happen either," she replied, standing and stretching briefly after the journey. The hum of the ship settling on Ruusan filled the air, grounding her thoughts as she turned toward the locker where Fate was securely stowed.

Her hand rested on the edge of the console as she considered the droid. "Fate is... unique," she said, her tone thoughtful. "But I think we can work with him. He's clearly agitated, and for good reason." Her gaze shifted to Caelan, her smirk faint.

Valery stepped toward the locker, "Let's see if we can disarm him first. Remove or disable his blaster function, then give him a proper tune-up. Maybe that'll help keep us safe. Unless you happtn to know how to reprogram droids? She glanced back at Caelan, her smile widening slightly.

She crouched near the locker and tapped lightly on the panel, speaking in a calm but firm tone. "Fate, I know you're upset, but we're not here to hurt you. Let us help fix you up, and I promise you won't be locked away like this again."

"That sounds like a good idea," he said in agreement. "I don't know how to program droids, just how to understand them."

She got up and went to the locker and he unbuckled to follow. If nothing else, they would end up having to disable him. Maybe there was a restraining bolt somewhere in the ship? He didn't really want to use that on him, but it might make it easier to get him fixed. At least, easier in the since that neither of them would wind up getting shot while they took him to someone to get fixed.

Rummaging through the various crates and boxes produced no luck. He did find a controller for a bolt, which made him wonder if the droid actually already had one on him. He hadn't noticed, but maybe he did?

The droid beeped incessantly at Valery and Caelan grimaced.

"He's alternating between cussing at you and begging you to fix him."

Droids, he knew, didn't really have feelings. They weren't programmed for more than their jobs. They did have their own personality, but that was really just the way they responded to things and understood what was going on around them. He held up the activator for the bolt and hovered his thumb over the activator.

"Sorry, Fate."

He pressed the button and after a second there came a thunk from inside of the crate.

"Think he fell over," he said, showing Valery the activator.

Valery watched as Caelan rummaged through the crates, her head tilting slightly at the relentless beeping and warbling coming from Fate. Her lips quirked into a faint smirk when Caelan translated, but she decided against joking around.

She knelt beside the locker, her amber eyes narrowing slightly as she focused on the sounds inside. The rapid-fire beeping stopped abruptly when Caelan pressed the button on the restraining bolt controller, followed by a dull thunk from within. Valery sighed softly, brushing a strand of hair back from her face as she looked up at him.

"Well, that's one way to keep him from shooting us," she said, her tone lightly teasing but still tinged with sympathy for the droid. Her gaze shifted back to the crate, and her expression softened. "Alright, let's get him out and take a look at the damage."

Standing, Valery extended a hand to Caelan, motioning for him to help with the locker. As they worked to open the locker, she glanced sideways at Caelan, her smile faint but warm. "Think you can handle an angry droid once we get him back on his feet? Or should I let him know that if he gets out of line, there's a second restraining bolt waiting with his name on it?" Her tone was playful, but the glint in her amber eyes suggested she was already considering her next steps carefully.

It didn't take long before the lockered opened, allowing them to take a first look.
