Remembrance Classed

"Ah yes."

Sam took a moment to order two dishes. One coconut and one red pepper. Then she requested a side of white rice and two extra plates. That would be plenty.

"Perfect. That will be all. Thank you."

The waiter turned and left with a quick trot. The food would be out shortly. Sam rubbed her lips and tapped the table. This really was an excellent dining room.

"Have you ever been far from Ossus, Padawan Quell? You mention travels but few destinations. I wonder? How much of our wide galaxy have you seen, hm?"

[member="Ayden Quell"]

Ayden's stomach rumbled after Master Jhovna had ordered their food. He didn't realize how hungry he was, and the hollow feeling in the pit of his gut was making him rather antsy. Thankfully, the Jedi Knight, always quick to conversate, inquired as to whether Ayden had travelled very much.

"I haven't been too far from Ossus, and unfortunately haven't seen much of the galaxy, though I'd like to. I've only ever been to Aleen Minor, Coruscant, and Ossus which relative to the size of the galaxy isn't much. What about you? I get the impression you must love to travel."

The kitchen chimed and their food was on it's way. Sam ignored the sounds of the chefs and focused on [member="Ayden Quell"] instead,

"For the Jedi Order, oh yes. Accommodations are always lovely and I do enjoy the brisk pace of business. Destinations are neither here nor there. I've never been stranded in a desolate waste nor had to brandy politics with the Senators. So I consider my travels fortunate indeed."

The waiter approached and set the entries onto the table. Extra plates for sharing.

"When you become a Knight yourself Padawan Quell you will learn to enjoy the freedoms and responsibilities that come with it. It is a rare gift among men to never have to want for anything."

She waved a hand over their dinner,

"We are blessed Order, indeed."

Sam winked,

"...Hehe. Dig in."

Plates stacked high with noodles, rice, and vegetables arrived at the table. Their steamy decadence rose from beneath the depths, filling the air with sweet smells. Ayden Quell's mouth watered at the sight and smell. "I see. What was your favorite destination?" he inquired about Sam, while his eyes hungrily took in the food. The waiters said their pleasantries then departed off back to the kitchen to cook up more of their delicate recipies. This was beyond anything he ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Yet, he felt guilty.

He felt guilty for what seemed like self-indulgence.

Ayden glanced disappointingly at Master Jhovna, then down at his food. He pushed the plates away from him. The Padawan's mouth no longer watered, his nostrils no longer swelled with delight, and things were no longer sweet. Now they were bitter. "I can't eat this," he said, his voice just shy of absolute acrimony.

Sam smirked a little. There was a difference between humility and not accepting a blessing.

"We dine at the pleasure of the Admiral and my own good curiosity. To refuse this opportunity is both insulting as well as politically incorrect. And, as your peer and associate in this endeavor, I might highly recommend you learn how to take a 'compliment'."

She waved her hand over the food,

"You see? Remain in the present Padawan. Do not place yourself above the gift you have been given. Remember, life is a gift as well. Shall we cast it away so easily? Or do we indulge ourselves and the learn the balance that must always be. Indeed. It is most certainly not the will of the Force that we restrict ourselves from the blessings of heaven and earth. Quite the opposite really. We live to bless and make merry. Such is the will of our maker. ...You worry too much and I fear would miss the mark with a most solemn haste. Hehe"

Sam knew that now was not the time for private teaching. Ayden would be free to make his own choices. She simply sought to remind him that not everything in life was a divine test of your moral caliber. Sometimes the Gods made you human, so you could just be human.

"Besides? ...Who's going to help me finish all this? Hehe. You wouldn't make a glutton of me, would you?"

Teasing, she smiled and began to dish herself. This meal was a long time coming. She wouldn't stand on ceremony for long. Oh my.

[member="Ayden Quell"]

"I very much appreciate the opportunity and my refusal isn't meant to be insulting. Luxury and money aren't things that come easily to me, you see. I've barely had any credits to my name. I just feel as though I don't deserve this," the Padawan said softly. "And there is also the problem of the Jedi hypocrisy. We want to defend those who can't defend themselves, to help the poor and unfortunate. Yet here we are, in rather superfluous settings, being gluttonous without a second thought. And I'm not sure whats worse, knowing this is wrong and doing nothing about it, or being ignorant to the fact entirely. Would we be Jedi if we had no conscience? How do you deal with that?"

There were a few other issues Ayden could have expressed, but these words he chose carefully to convey his conundruum. When you're a Jedi, everything is a moral problem.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

Because everything is so vastly interconnected, our decisions affect the decisions and circumstances of others. Thats why a Jedi needs a cool head when taking action, because the responsibility is eternally on their shoulders. They know and to know is a burden, a burden to choose between right and wrong, to live deliberately and actualize the creed they supposedly live by. If they don't confront these things on a daily basis, they lose appreciation for them. Things become expected. That's the source for a lot of disappointment and pain because expectations rarely, if ever, meet reality.

The Jedi have lost many to the dark side for that reason alone.

Sam just shrugged her shoulders and went about her dining habits with ease. Maybe Ayden had not deserved this, but it had been months coming for her. The fact that he withheld his participation was both ridiculous and, annoyingly, respectful. But naturally, it was every Padawan for himself these days. Ah well. What was the old saying? Everyone needed a crusade.

"Mmm." She smiled and took another bite. Waving around her fork with gusto and pointed to her food with a full smile, "...I'sht gud. Mmm. B'zery berry gud. Jchu don't cho wat umb missing. Hehe."

[member="Ayden Quell"] 's conscience be damned. She was in heaven.

I met a girl, on the square
who showed me how to kill my cares
but once thats done, man, theres nothing to do
times running backwards from me and you

He did worry too much. She had been right about that, but maybe it was necessary. On the other hand, it's possible he just wanted it to be necessary, to give his internal suffering some meaning. Either way, it didn't seem curable. He'd just have to deal with it.

Ayden Quell smiled warmly at Master Jhovna. He might not have agreed with it, but he wasn't about to extend his own ethical judgements to others. Though he wondered if the blonde Knight knew what he was talking about. If she did, how did she deal with it? At any right, she seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself. Perhaps fine dining had its place, at least for Sam Jhovna.

"I'm good on the food, but thanks."

The young Padawan took a gander outside the cafeteria's large transparisteel window, trying to remember what they were talking about before the moral dilemma arose.

Oh right, travels.

"You said you traveled a lot, mostly at the expense of the Order. Did you have a favorite destination? Was there some place you always wanted to go back to? I haven't been around much, but I'd really like to hear about what the galaxy has to offer. Who knows, maybe I'll give up this Jedi thing and explore the 'verse."

He really was curious about possible future travels. A contigency plan wasn't a bad idea. Ayden had already been kicked out from Aleen Minor and the Coruscant Security Force. Removal from the Jedi Order, whether at the behest of himself or the Council, wasn't a far fetched idea. So, he patiently waited for Master Jhovna's answer, thinking he would find a possible pleasure in her own delight.

Sam licked her fingers and thought about [member="Ayden Quell"] 's question. Favorite place to travel? Hmm.

"Well. I'd have to say Corellia. The Omega Protectorate is a stunning place to visit, even if you disagree with their politics. You can find anything you want on that bustling sphere. From good food to good company. It's all there. Now, others might mention that there are other more accessible vacation spots? But I've never given such claims much thought."

She shrugged and continued eating. Sam was very good at separating her personal life from her professional one. Many Jedi considered that the religion dictated every aspect of your daily life. Which it very well could. From birth till death, the Order could captivate your time completely if you let it. Jhovna kept the two very, very separate. In her personal time she pursued the Force and her personal feelings. However, in her professional time she pursued the Order and it's many politics-of-the-week. Both endeavors gathered very separate and very distinct results. After all, Sam had been a member of many different Republic 'State Orders'. Many Grandmasters, many diverse wars, and many variations on rules and conduct. If there was one great Jedi Order to rule them all? Well. Sam had yet to see it.

"I think you should travel. It would be good for you to get out more. See the world's beyond the Rim and experience many of their diverse cultures. Dig deeper into the Force itself and observe a few of the new Force Cults and Fringe Orders. ...Does wonders for the soul."

She smiled and pointed to her food,

"And trust me. Travel long enough and you'll learn to appreciate the little things in life. Hehe. Oh that was good."

Sam patted her belly with a smirk. All done.

Twenty Minutes Later

The tour and food was now over. Shifting our gaze out to the balcony of the observation deck. For as it is said, all good things must come to an end. So it was with their adventure and their brief inspection. All now coming rapidly to a close.

Sam turned and looked at [member="Ayden Quell"] . Her business here quite concluded.

"Well. I suppose that's us then. Job done and accounted for. ...How about you Ayden? Ready to call it a day and return to the Order? It's probably about that time anyway."

She smiled and moved to the door. Eager to wrap things up and be on their way.

"If I have to," he replied, feeling a tad guilty that he didn't want to leave. Such a brief tenure with Master Jhovna had Ayden feeling like a different person. He came in with expectations, a harsh rule of law he applied to himself and then projected onto others. You could say he put the weight of the 'verse on his shoulders. And perhaps that was still there. But a foundation built piece by piece would collapse if not taken apart in a similar manner to how it was built.

One at a time.

For now, Sam had taught Ayden to enjoy small pleasures. There was no shortage in the greatness of that.

As they made their way through the bowels of the Command ship, back to the wide open sea of the shipyard, back to the shuttle and to the temple, Ayden explained. "Thank you, master - for this opportunity," he paused, and his warm blue eyes found her there, walking tall beside him. "For everything," he finished.

Simple words, but there was no shortage in the greatness of them either. He hoped she'd understand. If only he knew this would be the last time he'd see her, maybe he'd have said more. But life doesn't quite work out that way.

That's why the small pleasures are so important.

Epilogue

Two weeks later Sam Jhovna was tasked with a mission in Sith Space. A mission from which she did not return. Her funeral was held on Ossus without a body and a Fire of Remembrance burned in the Temple's Hall of Memories for four weeks after that. She, like many others during these troubling times, had returned to the Force. Her story complete.

[member="Ayden Quell"] 's story however? Continued onward, warm and heartfelt, into the present. May the Force be with him. Always.
