Republic Defense Forces - Order of Battle

That sounds like a good plan, mate! You certainly have done a good job forming a mind of what you want, and putting it into action. :)

Hahaha, sorry, but no. I'm playing that one close to the chest. I have a slew of submissions ready for plans I have floating about in my head for a company called Improvised Designs. *devilish smile*

So, in my head it has gone up to a partial regiment. Have the survival operations battalion, a heavy assault battalion that would consist of tanks, walkers and artillery, an aerial support battalion that would be based on the Taurek S-A-S fighter carrier and I haven't mentally fleshed out the fourth battalion yet.

I think I will try to sub the units as limited use but not name then specifically in the sub so others can use similar units...

Please, someone tell me if I am going to far over board...

That is all well and good but how do you have a discussion about the structure involving military matters and tag two Jedi but not the only remaining PC member of the Republic's ground forces?

Am I not supposed to take that as an intention snub towards me?
My intention was not to snub you, or anyone else who participates in the Republic military. I want you to all have a voice and say what goes on in here, and it shouldn't be any less important than my own. That's why I made it a public thread instead of just carrying it out over PM with people who have talked to me about it.

You alternate through your OoB, assigning Platoon and Companies specific roles, but you keep them separate from one another.
Looking again at the usual invasion rules for PCs controlling NPCs, I'd agree that platoon and company sizes are going to make the most sense for our OOC purposes in standardizing this.

Are there any specific sizes for specific roles that you'd make?

For example, I can't see a whole company of snipers and observers personally (though I could see it at a platoon level).

Above all, the intent of this project is to make things standardized and easier to work with for everyone involved, including those of us who aren't necessarily military inclined. For example, a new Jedi padawan wants to take out a military force of the 100 allotted NPCs he's given. We can then give him a standardized set of platoons to choose from.

For that reason alone, I'm very tempted to consider making companies consist of three platoons (about 100 men) instead of the usual four...

A company of snipers would work, just not all together, they'd be spread out across a front acting as force multipliers.

That said, I agree that we make the standardized units that anyone can take out be platoon sized, but that we also sub them into companies so we don't get jammed up by invasions where you get to use only a subbed unit. That way we can organize a cohesive defensive or offensive strategy no matter what the rule set used.

That's a great idea, I say do it.

As for the other thing, Samuel hit the nail on the head, really. You can organize them in any way that's easy, but you don't have to deploy them that way.

If a battle comes up, you don't have to decide whether or not to send Sniper Company Easy, you just have to decide if you need a platoon from that company to attach to a line unit.

Bam.

We're basically making TWO rosters:

1) The standard roster that lists the units in the best organizational manner possible. This list will rarely change. Soldiers stay in their company battle after battle, etc. No need to change things up, we just have to fill out the numbers so we know how many of these unit types we have available.

2) The battle roster: This will change every battle. It will be strictly the roster for forces we're actually bringing into the fight, and that's it. And it will be a cobbled roster of the forces we need, pulled from the total force.

But the Battle Roster doesn't change the Standard. Standard is the same, always. Unless we make changes for whatever reason. Like we decided we don't need as many Sniper Companies, so we convert one to another type.

I like it. Any objections to this idea?

If not, we should start coming up with codex submissions to make this a reality. I'll probably start by making a generic line platoon, I'll put it up here to stage, and we can then modify it according to people's suggestions before I submit it to the Codex.
