Private Retrieval: Connel Vanagor

in the footsteps of a stranger

Connel would receive another text-only missive to his gauntlet's datapad just a few weeks after he had received the first. This one read,

Knight Vanagor:

Thank you again for tracking down Knight Lin's stolen kyber crystals. You and those you recruited to help did myself and more importantly her memory proud.

If you find yourself in between assignments, might I request your presence at Field Camp Nu on Eiattu 6? [Planetary coordinate attachment] I'm in need of a partner for a sensitive mission to Jiroch-Reslia. Please let me know if I can expect you soon.

Either way, may the Force be with you,
Master Farr, NJO Chief Curator

It was raining hard in the capital on the day that Connel arrived to meet with Efret for the second time. Just outside of the city, the long tent of the feild camp stood weathering the storm easily with the help of the Force braces that Efret and Sodus had put up inside and outside of the tarp. Their ethereal blue surfaces shimmered in the rain but otherwise blended into their surroundings, looking very similar to the sheets of water that clung to and ran off the sheets of thick plastic fabric.

As the Shadow approached the tent, one of the flaps of its entrance rolled back. Master Farr, Nirrah on her shoulder, stood on the other side, dry and holding a metal mug of a steaming liquid in both hands. She took one away to wave and then sign. "Thank you for coming." A monotone, feminine voice projected from the small vocoding unit clipped to the neckline of her tunic as it scanned her hand's movements with a green beam of light and interpreted their meaning.

She held out her other hand with the mug in it to Connel as he neared her.

Eiattu 6 was not a planet he had planned on coming back to for a while, but the Force has a weird sense of humor. So here he was. Landing his X-wing with reckless abandon on the outskirts of the city, about a click out of the archaeological camp. It’s not that he flew in a “crazy” manner, but this model fighter was built unique to him and those “Mortis Engines” that Master Matsu Ike Matsu Ike and company had donated. Well, it was almost all he could do just to keep control of the vessel at all. It was a fun, crazy ride to say the least.

To be honest, the message had caught him off guard, he was on his way back to Kashyykk, to the Shadow Temple to spend time with his dong Buster before the next assignment. He also needed to fit in some training with Ryana mina Ryana mina too, though if the mission called for it, he might just call her and see if she wanted to come anyway.

The camp was holding up well enough in the rain, which was surprising considering how hard it was coming down.

Not at all a negative reflection on the structures, just an observation.

Connel had seen the Council Member through the opening of the “big tent” so obviously that is where he would head in. Connel couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as he stepped inside the tent, there was more to the setup than he had thought that there would be, a testament to her organization. He was surprised at the sheer size of it, and the intricate details of the various paperwork as well. He took a deep breath and felt a sense of curiosity to be standing in such a momentous operation.

I’ll have you know I’m missing some strong “puppy” time for this. Pulling off his mask and letting it dangle over his head like a hood, and taking the cup, he hoped that his tone, the smirk on his face and the wink would show that he was kidding.

What can I do for you?

She didn't register his tone of course, but his facial expressions communicated that he was teasing by themselves.

When he took the cup of tea from her, and she understood his intension, she smiled back to him. Mischievousness glint in her eyes for but a moment. It never hurt to tease back. "I'm flattered," she began, sighing with both hands now, "that you chose me."

She led him a few meters away from the entrance flaps, the one of which that had opened now rolled back down. A long, picnic-style table made of some durametal rather than wood ran down the length of the main room of the tent. At the end, one door and another set of flaps lead into two other sections of the tent. She motioned for him, to sit if he'd like, then slid onto the bench opposite of where she had indicated for him. "I was hoping you could escort me to and from Jiroch-Reslia," she began before reaching to a holoprojector set in the middle of the tabletop. A galactic map of the Galactic Alliance-Sith Empire front projected up from it.

The former's territory was shaded in low opacity blue, the latter's in red. Jiroch-Reslia was indicated with a carrottop floating over it. "It's now part of the Sith Empire, right there." She pointed to it. "It's not far: three or four star systems away depending on which way we travel. I know the region I need to visit because I spent an extended amount of time there living with a Tunrothese tribe as part of an archeological tour, but I would like very much to have a companion."

Good job, idiot... she's deaf...

He had heard, but had forgotten.

Cracking his neck, much like his father would do before a fight, Connel sipped his tea. It was too bitter for his liking, but not bad, and he would not complain, she did not have to offer him anything. It was unexpected that she wanted to go to a planet run by the Sith, but it made sense how she wanted to. Just the two of them would draw exponentially less attention. He did not necessarily like the idea of being on edge for the entire trip, but the Sith were not necessarily going to be looking for them. Advantage Jedi.

When do we leave?

The question was blunt but poignant. No real need for elaborate soliloquies about how if he was her escort, she had to follow his rules, she was a Council Member, she knew the drill better than he did.

If we’re lucky, while there, some reconnaissance information could be pulled, provided it is on the way and doesn’t take from your work. He shrugged, it was not a necessity when you think about it, more that it could be an option. Pulling the mask back onto his head, but stopping just on his forehead, he continued to sip.

Just an idea.
