Suggestion Revised Ship Size Limits and Production

Kai'el Brat "Guardian of the Light"
so lets play with some visual representations

this is a Max sized Frigate

How Big is 500 Meters?

500 meters = 1,640 feet
That's over 5 football fields in length (including end zones)!

You can see 2 different star fighters to scale inside of this.

now I think every one has seen the cool submission for this ship

https://www.starwarsrp.net/threads/model-843-11-mors-mon-class-star-dreadnought.171626/

now the mors mon is roughly this shape

mors_monsssss_by_paladad_of_light_djgcpus-fullview.jpg

but how big is it?
well...

Dimensions:

  • Length: 26,468.53 meters
  • Width: 121,084.13 meters
But what does that look like?

Real-World Comparisons:

Width (~121 km):

That's roughly:
  • The distance from New York City to Philadelphia
  • The entire width of Los Angeles County
  • Wider than many small countries, like Liechtenstein or Monaco
  • Imagine a ship stretching across an entire regional map

Length (~26.5 km):

That's about:
  • 6 marathons back to back
  • The entire length of Manhattan Island
  • The height of 2,650 football fields laid end-to-end
  • About three times the length of the Golden Gate Bridge
The pink dot on this image in the 1 x 1 first square on the top left is about 500m
The Green ship is what the 5km limit is and the Blue ship is what's being proposed at 7km.

Now I tried to make an image to scale with all of them where you could zoom in and see the details of the frigit mud duck ship in the first image but it crashes my computer every time.

But! I took some screen shots. I couldn't fit the length which is the shorter size of the mors mon in my screen

Oh here's Malsheem by comparison

mors_mon_to_scale_and_the_malsheems_by_paladad_of_light_djgczka-pre.jpg

So like how big is this?
  • Length: 200,000 meters = 200 kilometers
  • Width: 200,000 meters = 200 kilometers

So we're talking a perfect square footprint.

Real-World Comparisons:

200 km is about:

  • From Los Angeles to San Diego
  • From London to Birmingham
  • The entire width of Taiwan
  • Almost the width of Florida's panhandle
A single side of this thing would stretch across entire countries or states.

Area Covered:

  • A ship that size would cover:
    200 km×200 km=40,000 square kilometers200\,km \times 200\,km = 40,000\, \text{square kilometers}200km×200km=40,000square kilometers
  • That's larger than Switzerland.
  • Or more than twice the size of New Jersey (USA).

You want access to big boy toys as a minor? Then become a subfaction of a major and play nice with their staff. Do what they ask and follow their rules and site rules(prioritize site rules if there is a conflict) IC and OOC about such things. BOOM! Ya got yourself a 7 km ship for your technically minor faction. Win/win. No modification to extant guidelines.

Not so easy as not all Majors are looking to add everyone and their mother as a subfaction.

Love fleeting, and love ships.

I support this initiative. How much does this ever really come into hardcore play? Rarely--right? What would hurt by an extra 2km for a minor faction?

I don't agree with the trade-off of joining a faction, losing narrative/creative control, for 2km. I could see--maybe a dreadnaught, but alas...

Follow their rules for who can use the big ships. It's not that hard to figure out what was meant by my words, especially given the topic of discussion. And no, not every faction wants minors to join them. Though for those who are open to subfactions, I'm sure if you aren't a dick and slam them with a list of demands, they will mostly be amenable to letting you write your story and how it intertwines with theirs.

tbf the Malsheem is owned by a minor faction
The Malsheem is also a civilian space ship, which have always been unrestricted.

I think loosening the restrictions wouldn't solve the problem, and in fact would only make it worse.

Fleeting rn is as dead as it ever has been, and only sticks around in the form of number crunchers who don't take hits. Loosening restrictions would only lead to further ship measuring contests.

I think if fleeting were a more active theater more restrictions would be beneficial, but if fleeting is dead and barely anyone engages with it then why keep up the restrictions.

I always looked at fleeting like PC vs PC combat.

But, I also don't know what mess fleeting evolved into--based off the comments above. I would, still will, enjoy the ship combat aspect.

I mean, that's how I'll agree to fleet anyways... I would also, love the ability to submit a 7km ship for my corporate faction--so maybe I'm biased.

Fyrago

Slavelord of the Slice
I believe fleeting should be decided by a game of golf with friends and whoever gets the most salt loses.

Nah, but seriously, there are already people who can't handle corvettes or frigates dying, adding the i.s.s dreadballs-class nutbwoi as a dreadnought option in combat will be even worse since it'll be a priority target and it will take like, i dunno, 2 micropeanuts of shield damage.

point is, if fighter squadrons still get to live.... eh? i dunno. just feels like adding fuel to the fire.

I would love for minor factions to have bigger ships tho

Honestly lessen the restrictions overall and judge it case-by-case

No

Ya’ll can keep discussing it, but no means no. I’m not entertaining this suggestion. I’ve already warned this thread once, you are wasting your time. It is meaningless to continue to try; I am extremely proficient in not giving a damn about this issue.

Reasoning: This suggestion adds NOTHING to roleplay. You can try to articulate that it does; we have 13 years of history proving it does not. Size is arbitrary and fleeting mechanics ALWAYS fall short of gripping meaningful roleplay. EVERYTHING you can do, right now, you can do without this suggestion and have it seem both immersive, entertaining, and within the spirit of Star Wars.

But make no mistake, you are afflicted by an inabilty to roleplay with others. You are the soloplayer, the intention to build an Empire, rule an Empire, and be an Emperor with no followers, no friends, no allies, not even any subjects.

You want to be the Kings of Nothing, as long as its a Grand Nothing and not a medium nothing.

Literally go away with these ideas. Planet sized ships for Minor Factions will make you a bad writer. I dont gatekeep Chaos for only good writers, but I am biased towards the good writing, so no. Go find something else to whine about getting 3 players for. Literally go make some friends, start a major, make ridiculous ships, the end.

A 5 kilometer battlecruiser should be a cool and special thing to have, but sadly it just isn't.

Its 9 times the size of a US navy carrier IRL. 9x magnified.

I’ve gotten lost walking inside the skin of a US naval carrier on multiple occasions, with one instance lasting up to two hours, simply because two ladderwells were barred off for maintenance.

5km is 3 miles long, for the yanks.

Do you know how long 3 miles is?

When’s the last time you walked 3 miles IRL? I challenge you to do this IRL, to get an idea for it.

Your writing isn’t suffering because of these limitations. You are the limiting factor here, not our arbitrary submission limits. Changing spreadsheet integers wont refresh your muse. Its boring. This is boring to discuss. Its boring to roleplay. Its boring to submit. I hate it, so much, because its all incredibly boring.

Make it not borinf and maybe I’ll allow the Factory to sit at the table with you. But until then, find another way to unlock the muse, spreadsheets aint it.
