Rules Change: Cortosis and Phrik?

Ehhh... I'm kinda in agreement with [member="Fabula Cavataio"] with that aspect. It might just be my personal upbringing and IRL background (Mom works Sexual Assault for the military), but just because it's not reported doesn't mean it's not a problem. If OOC bullying becomes an issue more so than we know of, we'll lose members. Enough members leave and the site hurts for it both in member base and reputation. Plus, I know of at least one OOC bullying issue/rumor that was a problem on the board at one point, though I'll not name names as rumors be rumors be rumors.

Thinking back on it, like I said, perhaps a middle ground or complete alternative is in order? One that prevents the nuisance of folks throwing fights and prevents OOC bullying from potentially becoming an issue.

No, the PvP aspect is actually a very good idea. In an equal setting, it actually makes getting it a challenge. However, both sides of that PvP objective hold merit. Losing in order to get the material teaches humility (even if it is false humility most of the time), and winning in order to get it cuts back on the number of people who actually do get their godmode gear.

That said. It is a tricky situation from both sides, and I think we need to discuss possible approaches before just jumping bandwagon to a new one and assuming that'll fix anything.

But then we're back at the beginning again.
The majority of people agreed that it was a bad thing for 'please beat me' threads to keep appearing as a cheap way to get stuff.

Should we clarify what 'devastating' means? IE, not a black eye and a stubbed toe?

Exactly. It's all well and good to say 'members should just hit report if they feel bullied,' but we have no real way of knowing what proportion of the board's current membership is comfortable using the report system, whether they feel they'll be wrist-slapped if they somehow use it wrong, whether they feel someone strongarming them for a victory is reportable, and so forth. We can't expect the same perspective from the average board member as we do from our normal circles -- and make no mistake, our normal circles are not the average board member anymore.

Frankly, I feel like it's possible we could inject a lot more fun and fairness, and reduce abuse potential, if the phrik/beskar/cortosis objectives covered both the existing clause and the converse. "Inflict or suffer a devastating defeat from a Mandalorian." Throwing fights? Gone. 'You should let me win because of reasons'? Lessened. Randomized fight outcomes, which is what we get with nearly all other threads -- except now we're promoting a normal and board-integral behavior instead of promoting its distortion.

Two thoughts:

1) I like [member="Rasho the Hutt"] 's idea. It also makes sense. The ultimate idea is to promote good RPing and writing, yes? If so, then losing or winning a fight in such a spectacular manner that you would award a Pulitzer should more than suffice, regardless of the outcome. This also gives people an option to win or lose, instead of creating a dichotomy they must subscribe to. I like it.

2) Regarding Rasho's point about not knowing what the member base really thinks, I wonder if it would be fun and/or useful to conduct an anonymous survey (Survey Monkey?) of the member base about various issues, such as attitudes towards the staff or comfortableness with using the report button. Just an aside.

This, so much this.

That might be wise.
