SPECIAL FEATURES
Ultrasonic Disruptor
STRENGTHSUltrasonic Disruptor: The Scarecrow emits high-pitched frequencies designed to stimulate an intense and overwhelming fear response in creatures within a thirty foot radius. This can potentially render them incapacitated or perhaps, as is more common in the case of smaller creatures, even scare them to death.
WEAKNESSESSound Dampeners: Sufficiently attuned sound dampeners could render this device’s effect moot without too much trouble.
Variable Effect: Individuals that have received highly specific training against the effects of fear can potentially mitigate the effects with concentrated effort. The use of select force powers may also help, as will high doses of beta-blockers.
Species Resistances/Immunities: Similarly, certain species, both sentient and non-sentient, have natural resistances and/or immunity to the effects of this device.
DESCRIPTIONAs odd as it sounds, the Scarecrow was actually one created through failure. Originally conceived in the pursuit of an anti-Ysalamiri device, Kessler jumped the proverbial while waiting on further information regarding the creature’s specific biological makeup, inadvertently creating a prototype that was a lot less discriminate in nature. Simply put, while it can theoretically affect Ysalamiri as intended, it will also negatively interact with any other species within hearing range.
So, perhaps not a complete failure, then. It might not distinguish between Ysalamiri and any other species that can hear in the 4,000 to the 10,000Hz range, but the ultrasonic frequencies it emits are still capable of stimulating powerful fear-based responses in its targets (intended or otherwise).
At the low levels of intensity this can cause an irregular, increased heartbeat, rapid breathing, sweats, dizziness and a difficulty to concentrate. As the device is dialed up, the effects likewise increase in scale, leading to the subject to freeze up, lose the ability to think rationally and/or attempt to immediately flee from the area. At the most extreme, the subject may experience a psychosomatic death due to the strong emotional shock. This is only commonly seen in small creatures and those individuals with a underlying, pre-existing condition, however.
