Rank: Cryptographer, analyst
Homeworld: Ord Radama

Species: Human
Gender: Male
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 154 lbs

Personality

With a mind to rival most Givins, Sebastian Thel is a young mathematician who uses his skills to serve the Empire. Speaking with a soft, robotic voice in an Imperial accent, he is straightforward in his manner and commonly regarded as strange. He is reserved from small-talk, which he cannot stand, and presents his points directly, while maintaining a stoic exterior in the face of his work. He is withdrawn and quiet, not bothering to disguise how he acts with any sort of flair.

Sebastian is genuine to a fault and incapable of lying, which has earned him the respect of his superiors, as they can be assured that he will never spy for an enemy power. However, this also means that he says exactly what he thinks and often forgets his manners. When he does say something that is out of line, he will become embarrassed when reprimanded. Along with his direct manner of speaking, he interprets the things other people say very literally, sometimes taking them out of context.

Sebastian is aware of his deadpan manner, as well as his inability to understand jokes and as a result, he is actually very shy. When complimented on his skill with mathematics, he becomes bashful and does not know how to react. On the flip-side, if does not agree that something he has said is inappropriate, he will just stick out his tongue. He is particularly cheeky while operating the communications network and likes to play tricks with his opponents on the other end of the channel.

A logical thinker, Sebastian is mostly likely to settle on an option that makes sense, rather than one which is necessarily kind. Empathy does not come easily to him and he can be mistaken for being cold, when in truth, he simply does not know how to deal with the feelings of others. Just as Sebastian struggles with reading emotions, he seldom becomes emotional himself. This is not to say that he does not have feelings, they are just difficult to notice.

This changes when he consistently fails to solve a problem, in which case he will lose his temper. While usually quiet, he will become angry if he makes an error or loses a game. There are a few things which press Sebastian's temper, gambling is one of them, due to experiences from his past. Another is slicers who work against the law. More than anything, he hates when others accuse him of having no feelings, which is enough to legitimately hurt him.

Despite his intelligence, which is nothing short of freakish, Sebastian is still a young man who has only just entered his twenties. He loves playing holo-games, electronic music and the latest tech. While not on duty, he can be found rooting out cybercrime in the seedier parts of the galaxy. He is a respectable individual who works for a totalitarian regime, but still fancies himself a bit of a cyberpunk.

Sebastian is attracted to men, but has never been in a relationship and does not know how to go about doing so. He is a fool for smart, elegant men who are weaker or more vulnerable than himself and likes to protect them, or at least try. While he is capable of actively helping somebody in need, he will not be able to support them emotionally. For this reason, he has difficulty keeping the friends he makes. When encountered at first, he withdraws, but a short conversation will reveal him to be friendly and slightly cheeky, with a dry sense of humour.

Strengths

Givin Smart + With a capacity for mathematics commonly seen in Givins, Sebastian excels at solving complicated problems and breaking major issues which press the Empire down to numerical values. He can spot patterns in data that would otherwise go unnoticed through general investigative procedures and determine outcomes at a rapid pace.

Cryptographer + Sebastian specializes in breaking codes and encrypting critical information. He excels in modular arithmetic, his favourite subject and applies the methods studied in number theory to intercept heavily encrypted frequencies. While he holds formal degrees in cryptography and mathematics, his skill with computers has been largely self-taught.

Analyst + Sebastian analyses tactical decisions which enemies have made in the past to determine where they will strike next, as well the behaviour of prisoners while they are being interrogated. With his trusty dice always on hand, he will be quick to invite a political prisoner to a game of chance in order to weed out a confession.

Weaknesses

Non-combatant – Sebastian does not know how to fight, or use a weapon of any kind. While he sometimes carries a blaster pistol while undertaking a mission or operating under fire, he does not know how to use it. In time, he may learn how to wield a ranged weapon if necessary.

Too Honest – Working undercover was never on the cards for Sebastian. He says exactly what he thinks and has difficulty lying, with the exception of circumstances when his life is in danger. Because of this, he will never be able to spy for the Empire or undertake diplomatic missions where the delicacies of social interaction are important.

Socially Inept – Sebastian has the social skills of a toad. For the most part, he is a quiet individual and likes his privacy, if not deadpan when spoken to. This is not to say that he does not like to chat or meet new people, he’s just not very good at it. As a result, he may be seen as disrespectful, when he simply doesn’t know how to word things.

Feelings – While Sebastian excels at analysing the behaviour of opponents in a mathematical sense, he does not know how to deal with the emotional factors. He finds emotional situations confusing, especially when a method which makes sense is not necessarily the humane option.

Appearance

Standing at six foot two, Sebastian is lanky and very tall. He has fair skin with a peachy complexion and messy, dark brown hair which parts in the middle of his forehead. His hair is pin-straight and long in the front, while neatly trimmed at the back. He has soft, brown eyes which match the colour of his hair. While on duty, he wears a dark teal military uniform with a double breasted jacket, britches and jackboots. He has dark rings around his eyes from sitting in the dark, looking at the computer for hours on end.

Two of Sebastian's top teeth are crooked, they sit on top of the others at the sides of his mouth. He is very embarrassed about them, which is why he rarely smiles. If he does smile or open his mouth, he pretends to scratch his nose to hide his teeth. He is clean-shaven, unless he is just lazing around at home, in which he might have some stubble. Under casual circumstances, he wears a black t-shirt with an equation on the front, army pants and combat boots. He wears thick-rimmed, rectangular glasses with brown frames most of the time.

Biography

Sebastian was born on Ord Radama, under the security of Imperial rule. He took after his father, a communications officer who nurtured his skill in mathematics. From a young age, Sebastian displayed an alarming capacity for solving problems and would work through cryptic crosswords at a rapid pace. His father brought him sheets of coded messages and although they were harmless in terms of their content, they kept Sebastian entertained for hours.

Sebastian’s father was wary about sending him to school. His mother thought it would be good for him to interact with other children, having dismissed his eccentric behaviour as an attempt to get attention. By the time he began at school, he was already well ahead of his peers, which gave his mother an idea. She took him to local podraces, where he forced him to determine the outcomes of her bets. Sebastian enjoyed this at first, having no idea that his mother had a gambling addiction.

However, when his calculations were wrong, she scolded him and he began to feel progressively threatened by her presence. Sebastian said nothing, but when his mother won a large amount of money, his father became suspicious and contacted the authorities. Shortly after his mother’s behaviour had been brought to light, Sebastian’s parents filed for divorce and his mother underwent therapy for her addiction.

The authorities remained concerned about Sebastian and conducted a series of tests, which revealed his above average intelligence. He was placed in a specialist school, in the hopes of providing him with more opportunities to use his skills, this however, was a disaster. The other students brutalized Sebastian, who would often run away before school started and hide for the rest of the day. His grades suffered, but his father was too absorbed in his work to notice that something was wrong.

When Sebastian tried to run away one morning, a group of boys shoved him into the back of their speeder and drove to a quarry, where they beat him within an inch of his life. When Sebastian regained consciousness, he was unable to walk and was forced to lay there until he was discovered by construction worker, who contacted the police. He later saw his father when he awoke in hospital, where he told him that he would be taken out of school.

Although relieved, Sebastian was unable to return to his studies for the following months, which he spent trying to recover from the experience. He was home-schooled by his father and gradually managed to return to the subjects he loved. After graduating, he moved to Bastion to attend university, where he double majored in mathematics and cryptography. University life was kinder to Sebastian and he made friends, many of whom were mathematicians who worked for the military.

When Rebel forces attacked Jaminere, Sebastian and many of his colleagues were recruited by Imperial intelligence to analyse local transmissions. Crammed into a bunker with his fellow mathematicians, Sebastian located code in the broadcast and upon decrypting it, revealed that the Rebels were planning to attack the region where he was working. With the comms centre under fire, Sebastian and his colleagues, none of whom had ever seen a battle were caught in the onslaught. The Rebels infiltrated the communications centre from beneath the sewers to broadcast propaganda and their leader, a Jedi Knight, knocked out the analysts with a force attack.

Imperial forces drove the Rebels out, but Sebastian was left shaken by the experience, his beliefs about the Jedi having been tarnished. When the fighting was over, Sebastian was brought before [member="Darth Carnifex"] himself, who commended the efforts of himself and his colleagues. Sebastian was recruited into Imperial Intelligence as a full time cryptographer and analyst. To this day, he despises gambling.
