“Captain.” she was jarred awake by the voice of her lieutenant. It seemed he had dozed while standing there. It couldn’t of been for more than a second but she was still blushing deeply under her helmet. “Your needed in the south quarter.” he explained completely unaware that she had been momentarily asleep when he arrived.
“Lead the way.” she said stifling a yawn as they set across the camp. After a few moments walking she saw what she was needed for. There was a man kneeling in the dirt clapped in irons and a few meters away, one of her men-dead. Just karking perfect- she thought as she walked up on the scene.
“What happened here?” she asked the men that were guarding the prisoner.
“This piece of garbage-” the handcuffed man let out a grunt of pain as the soldier kicked him hard in the midsection“-killed Warrens.”
“Why?” she asked.
“Who cares why?” asked the soldier who didn’t do the kicking.
“I, care. You will remember who your speaking to.” she said forcefully. The soldier had the grace to apologize before speaking again in a much more respectful tone.
“Says, Warrens forced himself on his wife.”
“Is this true?” she asked finally addressing the prisoner directly
“Yes! He raped my Nelly he did!” the man exclaimed.
“Bring the wife.” she ordered. The two soldiers saluted and went off to the west quarter. Ten minutes later they returned with a woman. She was heavier set but still very pretty or she would have been if not for the bloody fat lip and the deep purple and green bruise over her left eye.
“Nelly!” the man on the ground shouted before the soldier that just returned gave him another hard kick.
“What happened to her face?” Captain Raenaii asked her men hoping they hadn’t been fool enough to do that to her.
“Found her that way.” the kicker responded. She let out a silent sigh of relief.
“What’s your name?” Charisma asked the wife. “Full name please.”
“T-Tranalia Vacor.” the woman responded as clearly as she could past her severely busted lip.
“Tell me what happened?” Charisma asked keeping her voice calm, steady and impartial.
“That soldier, he…he…”she broke down into tears at this point, big heaving sobs. Charisma waited patiently for her to be able to continue. “…he raped me!” she shouted through sobs pointing at the body of the dead soldier.
“and so your husband killed him then did he?”
“Yes.” she replied weakly.
“Thank you.” Charisma replied as kindly as possible to the still crying woman. Before rounding on her chained husband.
“Do you admit to killing this man?” she asked bluntly.
“Yes.” the man replied “He raped my Nelly.”
“Why did you not bring it to the attention of another soldier or myself?” she asked.
The husband laughed. “Like hell you lot would do anything about it. Protect your own wouldn’t you?”
“You think that we, the personal guard of Salvor Anex, The Shadow Warden, Justicar of the Dynasty would allow a crime to go unpunished? That we would let such an act stain our reputation and reflect poorly on our Warden? You accuse us-nay you accuse Warden Arnex of corruption?”
that stole the laughter from his throat. It seemed for a second he was going to retort before his voice trailed off to nothing. At this point a crowd had gathered. Nearly twenty people had followed Nelly and the two soldiers back from the refugee quarter and all of them took turns telling Charisma just how terrible Warrens had been to them all these last couple of days. There were even two more woman who came foreword and claimed he assaulted them as well.
“I’ve heard enough.” in her mind she was sure that Warrens had indeed forced himself on the woman. He was stupid and vicious. How he had landed a gig working directly under Warden Arnex, she never understood. It seemed that life or death rather had finally caught up to him.
“Raves Vacor, you stand accused of the murder of Renal Warrens, personal guard to Salvor Arnex, Shadow Warden of the Shadow Dynasty. I, Charisma Raenaii, Captain of the Warden’s guard, in the name of Salvor Arnex, Shadow Warden of the Shadow Dynasty, Ruler of the Erebus Imperium, hand to King Romeo Sin, Ruler of the Shadow Dynasty and The Blood of Vahl, do sentence you to death.”
There was an uproar at her declaration. Her men were on edge, weary for a full scale riot to break out at any moment. She waited for order to be restored before continuing.
“Any last words, Raves Vacor?”
“H-he raped her.” he stammered. “I was only doing…what would any man do…” it was clear he could not believe he verdict. “What about a trial? I deserve a trial.”
“your ways. Your system is flawed, at its core.” she spoke with conviction. “here the laws of Belkadan do not apply.” she pointed to a flag flying high above the camp. “As long as you are here under the banner of the Erebus Imperium, you live by our laws. We are not hindered by juries who could be swayed or judges who could be bought. Justice comes from the word of our warden and on this day I speak with his voice.” her devotion to Salvor Arnex could not be more plain.
“Are those your final words Raves Vacor?” she asked him again.
He spat on the ground at her feet. “Take that helmet off and look me in the eye, you queen. Then you tell me your right.” he said full of hatred.
Charisma popped off her helmet and handed it to the lieutenant. There were few words that could accurately describe Captain Charisma Raenaii and one of them was beautiful. Her thick dark brown hair was tied up in a braid so it could better fit under her helmet. Her face looked as though it belonged in the holovids. The only blemishes were the scars. She had one above her left eyebrow that curled down over her eye lid and went over the bridge of her nose in the shape of a “C”. there was also another that split her bottom lip in half and ran all the way down her chin, stopping just above the neck.
She took a rifle from her lieutenant as she handed him her helmet and aimed down on Raves looking him in the eye. “I’m right.” She pulled the trigger and Raves Vacor was no more.
“Lieutenant.” she said handing him back the rifle while taking her helmet and tucking it under her arm as they left the scene and made their way back to her tent. “I want Warrens posthumously stripped of his rank and don’t bother burying him. Burn him up with Vacor.”
The other soldier looked simply aghast. “You can’t be serious?”
“I am.”
“but, he has a wife on Eclipstica. How will she survive with out receiving his pension.”
“that isn’t my concern or yours. It was his and instead of thinking of her, he was forcing his dick into what ever he could.” she said coldly.
They were now in front of her tent, as she went to go in the lieutenant grabbed her arm stopping her.
“This isn’t right.” he pleaded. Clearly some thought that they, the lawmen should be above the law.
“We don’t do what is right Lieutenant. We do what we must.” she stated simply as she pulled away and went inside her tent.
Warden where are you…
