Siaber Crystal: Relying on Siaber Power Converters, the Shortbow falls victim to the crystal and should the crystal break - it would lead to a catastrophic blowback.
Blowback: Related to overheating or having the power converter fail/crystal crack the blowback of the plasma railgun would result in the energy going into the ship’s engine with fatal results.
Overheat: Due to discharging and charging of the weapon, there is a very real possibility of overheating the weapon as overheating can lead to breaks in the tubes. This can lead to blowback.
Charge: Requires a charge time between shots, and while the power converters have been upgraded to increase this charge time - it is still recommended to wait the maximum charge time to get not only the maximum effect but to ensure crew safety.
Standard, Short Range: Ineffective at standard/short range combat.
Size: Meant to target capital vessels over 100m long, smaller vessels may be able to dodge the railgun completely.
As part of a modernization program, the Shortbow featured on the Inflictor III was the first to be part of this project. The mechanisms for the railgun changed little, with the exception of the power converters. The Shortbow would feature siaber power crystal converters and this would enable the railgun a faster recharge time when compared to the first generation railgun.
Still ineffective at standard, and short range - unable to target smaller attack craft, gunships and corvettes under 100m. The Shortbow is also still prone to overheating, and now is subject to the failures of the siaber crystal should it crack. And while the charge time has increased overall, the recommendation is still to wait for full charge.
The shortbow still maintains its overall effective damage equating to two turbolaser batteries overtime, although this primarily affects conventional shielding. Specialized shielding such as molecular shielding may hold up more effectively against the Shortbow.
The railgun cannot be installed on vessels under 600m.
