Question Should we ban all real world mentions, hard line in the sand?

Theres a rp right now named “This is America” and for all intents and purposes, I can’t divine a reason why except the OP is trying to capitalize on a pop song. Its just so dumb and silly for it to be there.

I’m also down to just ban all the Australis, Americus, Canadicus, Britainicus Mando clans. I’ve always thought they were cringe af, not funny, not inclusive, and definitely not Star Wars.

I think a McYoda’s is okay but I’m prepared to sack it for the greater good. I think some parodying of the real world is okay, like how GTA parodies the real world.

What do you think?

I knew about Australis, but the others I had no idea existed. I'm not sure what value they add aside from being a specific IRL reference. They don't seem like the biggest loss, though I hope McYoda's survives.

I don't really see a reason why to ban it. We've used song lyrics as titles for years and parody has always been a thing on the board. Plus I'd have to stop making cards if we did.

The song title is not dumb. McYoda is not dumb. The Mando Clan names, on the other hand, are dumb. I cannot lie about it.

And I believe if this was a serious issue or problem, there would have been much more serious talk beforehand or a larger uproar.

This just seems like a publicity stunt of sorts or an attempt at creating unnecessary drama. I don’t support a ban of any kind or even more stringent expectations or guidelines.

If no one likes those Mando clans or the names, either don’t write with them or ignore them. Not that hard smh

I don't think it's necessary in the slightest.

If we have a problem with specific "instances" we ought to ask that those be removed, changed, or otherwise updated rather than a blanket ban. A wise person recently told me "Address the behavior, not the situation" and I think that applies here. There are plenty of things that we might find cringe that creep their way into the fandom but Mando Clans and Songs are pretty low on the red flag scale. There's a difference between "cringe/personal distaste" and "not star wars" and evaluating the content provided usually offers that scope.

While we're at it we'd be going after the Jack Sparrows, Power Rangers, Little Ponies inspirations that may not be the cup of tea for everyone but ultimately...Harm no one.

Taeli said it, we've used song names as titles for threads since I've been on the board, It's a fun little nod to pop culture and a good way for people to come up with names for threads that can mean something to them. I agree, I don't see that it's necessary to ban them at all.

People have used names from popular culture, sones or other names and we've never had an issue with it before without any issue or reports. If it's becoming an issue for people then let them report it and we can deal with it on a case by case basis. If it becomes a huge deal then we can come back to the board about it. but we have plenty of space in the rules right now to handle anything that crops up. And things like McYodas and the cards are awesome and make people grin and laugh.

I say, no need to ban them.

An outright ban on such things would prove problematic. Here are just a few examples that would suddenly be hardline banned:

1. The numerous Shakespeare inspired thread titles
2. Song titles for threads
3. Song titles used for staff announcement
4. Bible references for thread titles
5. Bible references that have been used in character as code in an invasion
6. The wide range of video game inspirations
7. Taylor Swift appears in titles how often?

This is just an example of inspirations, real world references, that have a fair cross section of writers and staff which have done this exact thing.

Subs in the factory/codex are already restricted to keeping them in the spirit of Star Wars. I don’t see an issue with expanding that line of inquiry.

Factory and Codex deal with this on case by case basis. When writers go too far we call it. I’ve had to walk things back for being too literal with this sometimes.

TL;DR: Deal with the obvious violations. Thread content matters way more than actual titles.
