- Sustain: As it's name would imply, the Spinal Duration Implant is a device that is designed to allow the user to sustain and effectively survive without food, water, sleep, pooping, or any of the other pedestrian things sentient beings usually have to do in order to survive. The device allows this through the use and regulation of various nutrients, endorphins, and synthetic chemicals. The only thing that is required is that the 'packs' inside of the device must be switched bi-monthly, this is in order to assure the body receives proper regulation.
- Edge: Due to it's nature as essentially a giant chemical factory the Spinal Duration Implant allows one to push their body to it's absolute limit. To be clear, the SDI does not enhance the body, it simply allows one to push themselves to their absolute maximum. This of course can have terrible repercussions at a later time as the body is not meant to be at 100% at all times.*
- Removal: The SINbiote is a surgically implanted enhancement. It is grafted on the exterior of the spine but is directly connected to the nervous system of it's host. This mean that it's removal or damage can be extremely dangerous. Sudden removal of a SDI can lead to death, paralysis, and other serious medical maladies. Even with careful surgicail treatment, removal of a SINbiote is incredibly dangerous often causing extreme backlash from the body and forcing the victim into a coma until recovery.
- Addiction: Not just psychologically, but also chemically addictive, the SINbiote eventually becomes an essential part of the body. Through the use of chemical and nutrient manipulation the body becomes 'used' to the SINbiote and thus it begins to 'turn off' less necessary functions of the body. This means that the longer one wears a SINbiote, the more one actually physically needs it to survive.
The Spinal Duration Implant, or SINbiote as it is playfully known around the SIN offices is a small mechanical device created at the behest of Kara Thawne.
In the most basic words, the SDI is basically a chemical regulator. Utilizing various technologies from all over the galaxy, the SINbiote is capable of changing, adding, subtracting, and maintaining various chemical reactions throughout the body. This means that through it's process the SDI effectively eliminates the need for eating, sleeping, pooping, and various other functions that people need to perform to survive.
The reason for this devices creation is quite obvious.
Standard functions of the body take up quite a bit of time. Most beings spend about half of their lives sleeping, add other functions such as eating and disposing of waste and you end up spending most of your lifetime doing things that could otherwise be replaced with for work.
Due to this, the development of the Spinal Duration Implant was a crucial step in eliminating 'downtime' for the Cartel. The SDI is used by the Thawne's themselves, various members of the Cartel, and the slaves of Ylen, most of whom are all well aware of the drawbacks. The use of a SINbiote effectively allows one to be active and functioning at a much higher rate than ordinarily possible, also making it perfect for use by soldiers.
Of course, the SDI has severe side-effects through standard use, becoming chemically addictive quickly and being a large spot of vulnerability for those who are often in the midst of combat.
Aside from these more obvious side-effects, it should also be noted that the SINbiote has never been tested in it's long term. This means that for all SIN knows, the device will cause all manner of interesting and deadly problems after a few years. Though this is a risk they are apparently okay with.
*This refers to the fact that there are 'limiters' on the human body, mostly so one does not tear their own muscles, ligaments, etc.
