Her mother is wise in that tactic. Makes biggest, fastest impact. Either shows A) you're not to be trifled with... or [in the scenario you LOSE the encounter] shows you're a fool and not worth the effort. There are grey areas where in either situation people will still mess with you, but win or lose, you have greatly reduced odds of people bothering you.
