OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
Intent: To create a general-purpose melee workhorse for the Sith-Imperial Legion

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
Manufacturer: Sith-Imperial Corps of Engineers.
Affiliation: The Sith Empire.
Model: Variant A Sith Concussion Staff.
Modularity: Yes, the hilt can be adjusted to suit troopers of differing heights and fighting styles prior to use. Staves must be sized and adjusted prior to use, as the locking and fastening of parts has been found to take too long under the stresses of combat.
Production: Minor - Limited to specialised soldiers of the Sith-Imperial Legion
Materials: Titanium-duralium alloy, high capacity phobium energy cells, synthetic leather grips, foam shock-absorbers, plasti-shield insulation sheaths.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Classification: Energised staff weapon
Size: Average, though with the modular hilt, the staff can range from 5 to 9 feet in length.
Weight: Light, the staff weighs approximately 3.5 kg, with larger staves weighing 4 kg.

SPECIAL FEATURES
- Repulsor coils: The Variant A is tipped with large powered end segments, from which miniaturised repulsor coils generate a strong current of electricity capable of manipulating the gravity of the surrounding area. When struck against a target, the repulsors release their energy in a large damaging burst.
- Secondary power: While actively blocking attacks against plasma weapons drains energy significantly, the Variant A rarely shorts out in combat thanks to a secondary redundant power pack capable of sustaining the staff for 5-10 minutes after primary power failure
- High-capacity energy cells: Phobium energy cells provide a potent and long-lasting energy source, significantly extending use time without requiring recharging or replacement of the power pack. With fully charged phobium cells, the manufacturer estimates a two-to-three hour use time.
- Shielding: To reduce overloading of the power source, the energy cell compartments are lined with plasti-shield to reduce electronic interference and potentially dangerous damage to the energy cells.
- Durable alloy: The titanium-duralium alloy construction of the staff is designed to be lightweight and comfortable to use, but also resistant to weathering and hostile conditions. It’s reliability makes it well-suited to the Legion’s troops, and long tours in the field.

Strengths:
[ + ] Powerful - The Variant A is capable of producing a significant burst of energy against a target, usually ranging from 4500 to 5000 newtons. In-field testing of the staff’s capabilities resulted in a typical knock-back range of 5 to 10 feet, with 60% of direct hits resulting in the target being knocked prone.
[ + ] Deadly - During in-field testing against living, unarmoured targets, the Variant A typically killed targets in one hit to the head, or two to three hits to the torso. While direct hits to the limbs and extremities were not fatal, the concussion staff caused significant damage. A postmortem analysis conducted by the Sith-Imperial Medical Corps found most in-field fatalities were the result of blunt force trauma to the head or chest (62%), internal hemorrhaging (19%), and excessive blood loss from lacerations (9%).

Weaknesses:
[ - ] Armour - The lethality of the Variant A drops off steeply when facing armoured targets. Specifically, armour rated highly for kinetic resistance mitigate the damaging effects of the concussive blow, drastically reducing the staff’s effectiveness.
[ - ] Overload - While steps have been taken to reduce the Variant A’s vulnerability to electronic interference, extended contact with weapons such as the electrostaff, EMP, or other electrical devices risks overloading the Variant A’s energy cells, resulting in explosive degradation, and prolonged exposure to heat has been found to produce the same effect. One instance of overload was noted during field testing after a Legion soldier using the Variant A was caught in the radius of a shock grenade. The overload of the energy cells resulted in amputation of the index and middle fingers, and minor burns to the chest and face.

DESCRIPTION
The design of Variant A Concussion Staff came out of the Weapons Research Facility on Fest, the product of a new design team made up of new recruits from across the sciences, including [member=”Susanna Sorrows”], recruited to develop new weapons and shielding technologies based on experimental power sources.

A need had arisen for dependable, easily produced melee weapons to be used by the Armed Forces in the field, as the Variant A was designed to be durable, easy to maintain and simple to use, the prototype was fast-tracked for production for the Sith-Imperial Legion.

The Variant A was picked over an equally viable alternative, the electrostaff, chosen over its more traditional counterpart because of its comparative safety, ease of use, and increased durability in the field.

Existing repulsor technology, which has existed in miniaturised form for millennia for use in lifts and doors, was further expanded upon and altered to create powerful repulsor coils that could be mounted to a melee weapon, and produce a large burst of energy without harming the user.

Initial trials of the Variant A were conducted on 4/1/859 during a skirmish between Legion forces and a criminal cartel in a station on the Daragon Trail. Following the success of the first trials, a modular design was developed to suit different sizes and physiques, and the Variant A was approved for production in equipment factories on Concordia, Scipio, and Mygeeto.
