Private The Art of Form

Jonyna smirked. Braze was so much like her, sometimes it was like looking into a mirror. "Sounds like a challenge. Alright kid, let's get going."

Jonyna was quick to rush out the door, expecting the boy to follow.

Ataru was an art of optimal movement. Not just fighting, but positioning, fluidity, and creative experimentation.

She figured Free-running was the perfect way to teach that.

The city was always a bit like the jungle. Natural pathways that only the bold would take. Wires were just synthetic vines, pipes branches made of metal. To a Cathar, it was a playground. To a Jedi Master, it was an obstacle course.

Jonyna moved with a grace, even if people below thought her insane. Wire, pipe, wire, wall. There was a rhythm to it. A dash, a swing, a flip. Often she did it just for the sake of style. Claws dug into stone and metal. Tail wrapped around plasteel and rubber, as hands gripped duracrete.

Jonyna was at home, even without the smell of the Forest.

Maybe that's why she hated cities.

They stunk.

The city was a jungle of duracrete and steel, a network of hidden paths waiting to be unraveled. Gaps between structures were challenges to overcome, ledges and pipes invitations to push himself further. The hum of speeders and the distant murmur of street life faded into the background, drowned by the pulse of adrenaline in his veins.

He ran.

Every movement was a test of instinct, every leap a lesson in control. His limbs burned, exhaustion a steady drumbeat in his body, but stopping wasn't an option. The challenge demanded more. His muscles ached, his breath hitched, but he kept moving, finding his rhythm in the chaos.

A misstep—a slip of the foot, a moment's hesitation—sent him dropping. The wind howled past his ears, his stomach lurched. React. Adapt. Keep going. His fingers found the rough texture of a pipe, the impact jarring through his arms as he swung forward. A sharp exhale, a flex of his core, and he launched himself up again.

Failure didn't matter. Only the next movement did.

Braze's focus sharpened. He studied the path ahead, tracked every shift in terrain, every surface that could become a foothold. His body learned from each stumble, refining itself mid-motion. Ataru was about trust—trust in the body, in the moment, in the sheer will to move.

Momentum carried him forward, higher, faster. A leap off a railing, a mid-air twist, boots barely grazing the edge of a rooftop before he propelled himself forward again. His breath was fire in his lungs, his limbs screamed for respite, but he didn't slow.

This was a fight against gravity itself.

He pushed himself harder, his reactions sharpening as he let go of overthinking, letting instinct take the reins. Faster. Riskier. More. He didn't just follow—he chased, challenging the impossible with every bound. A wall too high? He found a way. A gap too wide? He took the leap.

Fatigue gnawed at the edges of his vision, but he gritted his teeth and ignored it. The only way out was forward.

Jonyna moved with an effortless grace that defied gravity, her Cathar instincts shaping every movement into something beyond basic acrobatics—this was art, refined by instinct and discipline alike. She was a blur of motion, clawed hands finding perfect purchase on sheer surfaces, tail snapping out to hook onto a railing before she launched herself further ahead. She was amazing and Braze watched and studied her with awe as he tried to emulate her actions.

Form V: The Way of the Krayt Dragon

Djem So / Shien

The Perseverance Form

"A warrior's greatest weapon is not their blade, but their will to stand when others fall."

"A river does not fight the rocks—it flows around them and wears them down."

Form V is the embodiment of control through force. It does not wait, retreat, or yield—it dictates the flow of battle, keeping the enemy off-balance and reacting. It is the form of perseverance and dominance, where strength is a tool of strategy, not recklessness.

A practitioner of Form V does not wait for an opportunity—they create it. Those who wield this form refuse to be passive, taking the fight into their own hands. However, power without discipline leads to recklessness. The strongest warrior is not the one who swings the hardest, but the one who knows when to strike and when to endure.

Disciplines of Form V

  • Shien → Tactical Redirection (Ideal for multiple opponents and blaster deflection)
  • Djem So → Power-Based Dueling (Ideal for one-on-one combat and overwhelming force)

Both styles share Form V's core philosophy but serve different strategic roles. A well-trained warrior knows when to switch between them to adapt to the battle at hand.

Core Principles of Form V

Shien – Tactical Redirection (Ideal for multiple opponents and blaster deflection)

  • Blaster fire is not a threat—it is a weapon.
  • Defense is fluid and meant to redirect, not resist.
  • A master of Shien controls the battlefield, not just the duel.
  • Speed and angles create openings for attack.

Shien focuses on wide, sweeping strikes to handle multiple opponents while maintaining superior blaster deflection. Unlike Soresu, which absorbs attacks, Shien redirects them, sending energy back toward its source. Every defense is an opportunity to strike.

Djem So – The Strength of the Warrior (Ideal for one-on-one combat and overpowering an opponent)

  • Every block must become a counterattack.
  • Power and defense are one.
  • A master of Djem So controls the duel and does not let the opponent set the terms.
  • The goal is to wear down the enemy until they can no longer fight.

Djem So absorbs attacks, using an opponent's own momentum against them. It does not evade—it endures and retaliates with overwhelming force. Footwork is firm and rooted, like an immovable mountain, ensuring maximum leverage and stability. A Djem So duelist does not merely parry attacks—they turn them into crushing counterstrikes.

Strengths & Weaknesses of Form V

Strengths

  • Unrelenting offense forces opponents into a defensive position.
  • Every defensive move transitions into a powerful counterattack.
  • Strong endurance allows practitioners to outlast opponents in prolonged battles.
  • Shien excels at deflecting blaster fire, making it highly effective against multiple ranged attackers.

Weaknesses

  • Energy-intensive—Djem So relies on raw strength and endurance, making fatigue a major weakness.
  • Predictable against faster opponents—Makashi duelists or Ataru acrobats can evade Form V's powerful strikes.
  • Lacks subtlety—unlike Soresu or Makashi, which rely on finesse, Form V depends on overwhelming power, a double-edged sword.

Who Excels with Form V?

  • Jedi and Sith who want to control the fight rather than react to it.
  • Warriors with the endurance to maintain a prolonged battle.
  • Duelists who thrive on counterattacks and overwhelming force.
  • Fighters who prefer a balance between offense and defense.

Training Methods for Form V

  • Endurance-Based Sparring – Practice long duels with minimal rest to simulate prolonged engagements.
  • Strength Drills (Djem So-Specific) – Train with weighted practice sabers to condition the arms and core for powerful strikes.
  • Precision Deflection (Shien-Specific) – Redirect blaster bolts toward specific targets to improve accuracy and control.
  • Parry-to-Counter Drills – Instead of just blocking, focus on immediately transitioning into a counterattack.

Braze was a budding practitioner of Form V, and had always been more inclined toward speed and agility than raw strength. Yet today, he'd decided to challenge his limits.

Clad in a weighted vest, a belt loaded with extra weight, ankle weights around his calves, and even a few weights strapped to his wrists. He even had a weighted practice saber made from wood in his hands. It wasn't his natural inclination. Strength had never been his strong suit, and his body lacked the raw power many others had. But Braze believed in pushing his boundaries. He had honed flexibility and speed, but now, he needed to build the strength that had always been a weakness.

The training droid in front of him launched a series of rapid attacks. Braze focused on executing blocks that transitioned into counterattacks, redirecting each strike. The room was stifling, the temperature controls cranked up to an uncomfortable heat, making his efforts feel even more intense. Sweat streamed down his face, neck, and back as his muscles groaned under the strain. Each movement felt sluggish, the added weight slowing him down.

While the weight wasn't extreme, the resistance was overwhelming. His body screamed in protest, but he pushed through, refusing to relent.

Braze knew this discomfort was part of the growth process. He couldn't afford to let up now. His goal was to build strength that could match his speed, and the path to mastery was never easy.

Form before the Fall
Coruscant
Jedi Temple

The air in the Coruscant Jedi Temple’s training arena crackled with contained energy. Sunlight streamed through the high, arched windows, illuminating motes of dust dancing above the polished durasteel floor. The rhythmic hum of a lightsaber, a steady pulse in the vast chamber, echoed against the stone walls. Jedi Master Caltin Vanagor, a figure of immense presence, stood silently observing.

Caltin was a mountain of a man, even by Wookiee standards, though he was purely human. His face, etched with the wisdom accumulated over decades of service to the Jedi Order, was framed by a close-cropped beard streaked with grey. His powerful hands, calloused from countless hours of lightsaber practice, were clasped behind his back. Beneath his simple Jedi robes, muscles sculpted from years of rigorous training rippled with barely suppressed power.

Before him, Jedi Knight Braze, a young man grown, completed his practice form. Braze’s movements were fluid, a whirlwind of blue light as he transitioned between defensive blocks and powerful, sweeping counters. He was practicing Djem So, the fifth form, a style known for its brutal efficiency and reliance on strength. He finished with a flourish, the blue blade of his lightsaber singing as he extinguished it.

Caltin remained silent for a moment, his deep-set eyes, the color of a stormy sky, studying Braze intently. He saw potential in the young Knight, a fire that burned bright. But he also saw a recklessness, a tendency to rely solely on strength rather than the subtle guidance of the Force.

You have completed the motions, Braze, well done, Caltin finally said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in the air. But have you truly understood them?

He said, walking down from the seats into the arena a little more clearly. Djem So is a powerful form, a bulwark against aggression. It allows one to redirect the energy of an opponent, to use their strength against them. But it is not merely about brute force, Braze. It is about control, about channeling the Force to enhance your movements, to anticipate your enemy's actions.

He stepped forward, his immense frame casting a long shadow over Braze as he grabbed a training droid and threw it into the air. Let me show you, he commanded. Let me show you how you would defend against an attack compared to Soresu.

Caltin pulled his long handle lightsaber, and ignited the sovereign gold blad, humming in anticipation. He assumed a ready stance, his eyes focused and determined. Caltin, however, remained motionless, his own lightsaber now sitting down to his right, almost like he was just going to stand there. .

Engage, Caltin said, his voice calm but firm. Attack with the intent to disarm. The droid beeped an acknowledgement and prepared to move.

Hesitation flickered in the floating device. Attacking the master, even in training, felt… wrong even if the attacker were a droid. But anyone who knows the big man knows better than to question Caltin’s instructions. He gathered his focus, centered himself in the Force, and as the droid launched an attack aimed at Caltin’s exposed forearm.

One would have expected Caltin to parry, to block with a precisely timed movement. But instead, Caltin simply moved. With a speed that belied his size, he sidestepped the droid’s attack, his body flowing like water around the younger Knight’s body and then out into the open again. The droid’s strike whistled harmlessly through the air, leaving it momentarily off-balance shimmying around.

Before the training device could recover and continue its programming, Caltin’s hand shot out, not with a blow intended to harm, but with a gentle, almost paternal touch. He placed his palm against the droid’s dome, channeling a surge of the Force. Braze could more than likely see a wave of energy wash over it, throwing the droid backwards several feet. Landing hard against the wall.

Caltin deactivated his lightsaber and offered a smirk. It’s easy to prepare with technique, Braze, Caltin said, his voice softening. But preparing with the Force is a different story.

He picked up a training saber and sheathed Conservator over his back. Djem So is not simply about blocking and countering. It is about feeling the flow of the Force, anticipating your opponent’s intentions before they even form the thought. It is about using your connection to the Living Force to guide your movements, to make you faster, stronger, more perceptive.

Caltin stepped back, adopting a relaxed stance. Now, Braze, he said. Attack me. Empty your mind. Do not think, do not plan, simply react. Let the Force guide you.
