Public The Art of Tràkata

Tràkata: Deceive, disable, dominate. A deactivated saber is a gamble; with Tràkata, you're betting on your wits over their strength. Its brilliance lies in its paradox: to gain control, you must first let it go.

There were three fundamental techniques to Tràkata:

  • Pass The Blade: The duelist deactivates their blade mid-strike, bypassing the opponent's block, before reigniting it to strike the hapless foe.
  • Unbalancing Block: The duelist catches the opponent's blade with their own before momentarily deactivating it, causing the opponent to stumble and leave themselves open.
  • Flash Slash: The blade is activated for only a moment, just long enough to reach full length during a swing, before being deactivated again, leaving the foe disoriented and unprepared.
But what is a weapon? It is an extension of the body. And what was a lightsaber? Jedi view their lightsabers as much more than mere weapons. A lightsaber is a deeply personal tool and a symbol of a Jedi's connection to the Force, their commitment to the Jedi Code, and their role as peacekeepers. Either everything is a weapon, or nothing truly is.

Constructing and wielding a lightsaber is seen as a rite of passage. The weapon symbolizes mastery over self discipline and their dedication to protecting others. Jedi are taught that the lightsaber is only to be used in defense or to preserve peace, never as a tool of aggression or dominance.

Tràkata— was a cheap trick, often viewed in both Jedi and Sith circles as dishonorable. And yet, there was knowledge to be learned here. Knowledge that Braze sought.

Aether, the combat-hardened and wise Iron Knight, regarded the plucky, blade-obsessed youth with a measured gaze, his mechanical head shaking faintly as if in both amusement and disapproval.

"Tràkata, you say? Hmph... it is a tool, not an art. Tools are meant to serve a purpose, not define a warrior. Do not be seduced by its 'cleverness'—it is a technique born of desperation, not mastery."

He paused, "Answer me this: Why do you want to learn Tràkata? Be honest with yourself, Padawan, for this choice will shape the warrior you become."

This Jedi temple was an imposing structure, serene yet brimming with an unspoken energy. As Reicher Vax walked through its hallowed halls, his Sith armor drew quiet glances, the faint hum of tension rippling through the Jedi stationed nearby. He moved with purpose, his vibroblade sheathed at his side, its presence a stark contrast to the elegant weapons wielded by the temple's inhabitants. Despite his diplomatic immunity, the shadow of his allegiance followed him like a second skin.

A Jedi Knight walked beside him, her role as his escort more symbolic than necessary. She was a tall woman with a calm demeanor and an unwavering gaze. Her politeness was professional but distant, reflecting the quiet tension between their two factions.

"I trust you understand the significance of this gesture," she said as they passed a meditation chamber. "The Veridian Jedi Academy rarely allows outsiders to access our archives, let alone those of your persuasion."

Reicher gave a slight nod, his expression unreadable beneath his helmet's subtle visor. "I understand. And I appreciate the Academy's… generosity," he replied, his voice low and measured. In truth, he was more focused on the task at hand: finding answers about the pirate raid that had obliterated Polis Massa and taken everything from him.

Getting to this point was an exercise in insanity, but it had finally paid off. The Alliance could not afford to be implicated in the Polis Massa incident, it already had too many diplomatic crisis's on their hands and with Riecher being one of the only witnesses, he was important in calming the tensions. The main point of speculation in the attack was that of a potential Jedi leading the savage pirates, so a trip to the archives of a Jedi Academy was a great way to dispel any myths and rumors.

But to the Jedi around him, it was a cruel joke. A most flagrant deception, for at least the plucky rebels of old needed codes and passwords to gain access into the Empire, now the Sith could just walk their minions into the most sacred of places? He didn't even hide his markings or wear plain clothes, he carried his weapons and wore his armor with pride.

But something strange caught his eye, or more accurately, his ears...

Tràkata was not foreign to this Sith soldier, rather he had heard about it many times before in his guard rotations at many Sith Academies, the fact a Jedi would even consider teaching something considered so dishonorable had him intrigued. There was two, a Padawan, a young man with a wiry frame and sharp features and the man that was offering to teach. The Padawan caught Reicher's interest however, one that was willing to learn tools that others had so fragrantly disregarded...

Maybe he could kill two birds with one stone...

The Jedi Knight beside him noticed his pause. "Something wrong?" she asked, her voice tinged with suspicion.

Reicher straightened, masking his unease with a casual tilt of his head. "Just observing, this may the Jedi I was looking for." he said smoothly.

Deceive, disable, dominate. He may not wield a lightsaber, but maybe he can employ the very principles the Padawan had learned to his own advantage, and of course, to the advantage of the greater Sith Empire...

For a Sith to be permitted entry into a hidden Jedi school on the remote planet of Veridia, deep within the Shinryoku system in the Unknown Regions, was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled within a treacherous nebula—Centerra—formed by an imploded star cluster, the Shinryoku system was on the edge of the Luminaria system which was notoriously difficult to navigate. Its swirling remnants of stellar destruction obscured its planets, creating deadly energy fields and spatial anomalies that could tear apart unprepared vessels. Safe traversal of the cluster required the use of an Aetherium Prism, a rare and sophisticated navigational device capable of charting routes through the chaos. How the Sith had managed to find the Veridian Temple without detection, or if he had such a device, remained an open and troubling question.

The Veridian Temple's location was a closely guarded secret, serving not only as a training ground for Jedi but also as a sanctuary for younglings, civilian orphans, and the sick and injured in need of rehabilitation. It was a haven of peace and healing, and the Sith's presence felt like a blight on its sanctity.

The decision to allow the Sith entry had been made not by a council but by the Veridian Temple's Headmaster, Tirin Raene Tirin Raene . It was not a gesture of trust but part of a calculated plan. Tirin sought to capture the Sith and uncover how he had discovered the temple's location and navigated the perilous nebula. Allowing the Sith entry under tightly controlled conditions was deemed the safest option, avoiding unnecessary risks to the lives of those within the temple. This decision, while controversial, came with strict protocols.

The Sith, Reicher Vax Reicher Vax , was required to disarm himself and submit to the temporary suppression of his connection to the Force through the ingestion of the Spirit Muzzle. This flowering plant, native to Veradune, was brewed into a tea that rendered him Force-dead for up to three days, neutralizing any immediate threat. Once these conditions were met, he was allowed limited access inside. His every movement was shadowed by a vigilant temple guard, and his access was restricted to specific areas under constant supervision.

Even with these measures, the Sith's presence sent ripples of unease through the temple. For many, the idea of allowing such a figure into a sanctuary filled with vulnerable individuals—children, displaced civilians, and those too weak to protect themselves—was unthinkable. The Veridian Temple, a bastion of compassion and protection, now felt its delicate balance unsettled by the shadow of the Sith's presence.

The temple's Battlemaster, Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el and the Visiting Sentinel of Harmony Jonyna Si Jonyna Si , were immediately informed of the Sith's arrival, and detailed reports were sent to the High Council of the New Jedi Order sent to the Shield of the Jedi, Kahlil Noble Kahlil Noble . It was clear that Tirin's ultimate aim was to detain the Sith without jeopardizing the lives of those under the temple's care. Preparations were quietly underway to ensure the situation could be contained, should the Sith attempt anything beyond the limits of his restricted access.

"Answer me this: Why do you want to learn Tràkata? Be honest with yourself, Padawan, for this choice will shape the warrior you become."

"To be honest, I've been developing my own avant-garde style and philosophy of martial arts—a personal approach to combat that aligns with my understanding of it. I believe there are fundamental truths in this philosophy that I want to refine and explore further.

At its core, my idea is that to fight an opponent effectively, one must first know them. To truly know an opponent means understanding how they utilize their skills, techniques, and weapons. By studying the mechanics of their methods—how they are best applied and where their strengths and weaknesses lie—I can learn how to counter them more effectively. This principle also extends to my study of various weapon types.

How could I call myself a battlemaster or weapons master without mastering all forms of combat and cultivating a deep understanding of them? Ignoring techniques or weapon styles would leave a glaring gap in my knowledge—one that could be exploited. For instance, countering something as unique as a lightsaber whip requires intimate knowledge of its intricacies: its strengths, its weaknesses, and its possibilities. Without that understanding, I would be at a disadvantage.

This philosophy also underpins my aspiration to teach others in the future. I want to provide students with a rich and thorough understanding of specialized techniques, helping them to harness their chosen skills to their fullest potential. Tràkata, for example, is often frowned upon, but dismissing it outright would be a mistake. Even techniques viewed as unconventional or controversial deserve study. Mastery comes not from exclusion but from embracing the breadth of what is possible in combat."

Reicher stood motionless for a moment, processing the Padawan's words with the sharp pragmatism of a soldier who had survived too many battles through cunning rather than raw strength. Though the philosophy was steeped in the grandiose idealism of the Jedi, the core of it resonated with him. Understanding one's opponent, mastering all forms of combat—these were principles not exclusive to Jedi, Sith, or even Force users. These were truths of war.

He turned slightly, just enough to glance at the Jedi Knight beside him. "That one," he said, his tone even, almost casual. "He speaks as though he already sees beyond the dogma of your Order. Interesting."

The Knight's expression tightened, her composure cracking ever so slightly. "The Padawan's training is none of your concern, Sith," she said with measured calm. "You are here under strict terms—terms that do not include interference with our students."

Reicher raised his hands slightly in mock surrender, a faint smirk tugging at his lips beneath his helmet. "Of course, of course. I was merely admiring the depth of thought. Rare to find someone so... unorthodox. Makes me wonder if such innovation is encouraged or punished here, after all a rouge Jedi did spearhead the attack on Polis Massa."

The Knight's jaw tightened, but she said nothing further, leading him onward. Yet Reicher's mind lingered on the Padawan. Someone like that, willing to push boundaries, to question norms—it was a valuable trait. Even if this Padawan remained loyal to the Jedi, his perspective could be studied, exploited. And if the opportunity arose, turned.

And what if the Padawan was responsible for the Polis Massa incident? Then he could go home happy knowing the Alliance could uphold justice, that his parents would be avenged.

As they approached the archives, Reicher observed his surroundings carefully. The Veridian Temple was as serene as it was fortified, but cracks were inevitable in any facade. Tirin Raene's gamble to let him in spoke of desperation or a plan yet to fully unfold. Either way, he intended to learn all he could before this fragile truce unraveled. He knew that if conflict was inevitable, the Jedi must be the ones to strike first. He understood the suspicious nature of the Jedi, but surely they could detect that he was not sensitive to the force? Or did they just want to make him the Sith they all had dreams of defeating?

A simple Legionary like him was nothing to the power of the force, but the paranoid reverence of which he was treated to, the force dead drinks, the guards, the watch of every step, did they just expect him to shoot lightning out of his hands and wreck havoc upon them? Reicher was transported here blindly and will leave blindly, he had the authorizations he needed to be here, the only way that he could get the secret out was if he could make a connection the the inside.

The Knight stopped before a heavily secured door, flanked by two temple guards. One nodded, tapping a sequence into the console, and the door slid open to reveal the archives. Reicher stepped inside, his senses immediately assaulted by the hum of data terminals and the faint scent of ancient parchment. The Jedi had an impressive repository, one that spoke of their reliance on knowledge and tradition.

As he began scanning the records, guided by one of the archivists, his mind wandered back to the Padawan. What was it about the young man that had caught his attention so keenly? Was it the philosophy, the willingness to adapt, or simply the raw potential that Reicher had always sought in his comrades?

Deceive. Disable. Dominate.

He didn't need the Force to turn potential into a weapon.

After a time, the Jedi Knight returned, her gaze sharper than before. "Find what you were looking for?"

Reicher tilted his head. "In progress. Your archives are... extensive. But tell me, what happens to those who question the orthodoxy of your Order? Those who, like your Padawan, see beyond the rules?"

The Knight bristled. "Our students are guided to understand the balance of discipline and innovation. We do not tolerate recklessness."

"Ah," Reicher replied, his tone teasing. "And yet, true mastery often lies on the edge of recklessness, doesn't it? But I digress." He turned back to the terminal. "Such recklessness would be a trait amongst Rouge Jedi, such as the one I seek."

The Knight stiffened but held her tongue. Reicher, however, was already forming a plan. If the Jedi truly dismissed those who pushed boundaries, then perhaps the Padawan could be tempted—not to join the Sith, but to share his insights. For now, Reicher played the role of the compliant guest, biding his time and sowing the seeds of future opportunity.

Reicher pulled a a simple record from the shelf. He had located it much earlier, but it detailed some of the findings on the Polis Massa incident, of course, the only witness to the attacks was Reicher himself, so it was his own testimony.

Reicher held the record delicately in his gloved hands, the faint hum of the archive's energy shields buzzing in the background. He studied the file briefly, his own name scrawled neatly in the header, a stark reminder that his testimony was the cornerstone of the investigation. The Jedi Knight loomed nearby, her arms crossed, watching him with the kind of careful intensity one might reserve for a caged predator.

He closed the file softly and turned to her, his expression unreadable beneath his helmet's visor. "This," he said, holding up the record, "is a hollow reflection of the truth. The facts may be here, but the context—what truly happened—remains obscured."

The Knight's brow furrowed, suspicion evident. "Your testimony is already recorded here, Sith. What more do you hope to find?"

Reicher tilted his head slightly, adopting a tone that suggested careful consideration. "I believe that this is no longer just a matter of what I know. The incident at Polis Massa is tied to someone who understands combat philosophy in a way few others do—a rogue Jedi. The Padawan I saw earlier... he may hold insights that could help clarify this puzzle."

The Knight's eyes narrowed, her posture stiffening further. "The Padawan's training is not relevant to your investigation. He is a student, not an accomplice to any atrocity committed against Polis Massa."

Reicher raised his free hand in a placating gesture, his voice calm and measured. "I'm not accusing him of anything. But his... approach to combat aligns with what I've observed in the tactics used during the raid. The pirates weren't chaotic brutes; their combat doctrine mirrored that of the Padawan's interest. Surely, understanding such methods could aid both our causes?"

The Knight's skepticism deepened, her lips pressing into a thin line. "You tread a dangerous line, Sith. Manipulation will not work here."

Reicher took a step closer, just enough to make his presence felt without breaching her space. "And yet, isn't that what you're doing by keeping me here under constant watch, questioning my every move? I've cooperated fully. The Padawan's insights could bridge gaps in understanding that neither of us have yet considered. Are you truly so unwilling to allow even a brief conversation? Or does your Order fear that ideas, once shared, might undermine your foundations?"

Her jaw clenched, but she remained silent for a moment, clearly weighing the risks. Reicher pressed further, his tone softening to a note of sincerity. "I am not here to disrupt your sanctuary, Knight. I came seeking answers and justice for Polis Massa, nothing more. If that truth lies within your archives or your students, I only ask for the chance to uncover it."

Deceive. Disable. Dominate. The principles did not always require violence. Sometimes, they required patience and the willingness to plant seeds in fertile ground.

The call she had received was a strange one. A sith trooper, visiting a jedi academy under the guise of 'diplomatic immunity'. Supposedly here to look into a pirate raid.

Jonyna wasn't buying it.

The jedi master had arrived after a short hyperspace trip, and wanted to get to the bottom of this. Diplomatic immunity didn't matter when they were at war.

Walking through the halls of the Viridian temple, the jedi master growled at the thought.

"You." She said with a firmness, looking to the sith trooper. "I don't know what your game is, but I'm going to have to ask you to leave at once."

Reicher turned slowly, his movements deliberate, the subtle hum of his armor's servos the only sound in the tense hallway. Standing tall, his posture was unyielding, his helmeted face giving away nothing of his thoughts. His visor reflected the faint light of the temple, making his unreadable visage even more imposing.

"Master Jedi," he began, his voice calm and composed, tinged with just enough deference to avoid outright defiance, "I understand your apprehension. My presence here is... unorthodox, to say the least. But I am here under terms agreed upon by various diplomatic authorities, The Sith Empire as you think of it doesn't exist. It is crippled by internal strife and division.."

Reicher inclined his head slightly, as though considering her words. "Because, Master Jedi, I am a soldier, not a politician. My purpose is straightforward: to uncover the truth behind the raid on Polis Massa—a truth that may involve one of your own. If I am to achieve this, I need access to your archives and, potentially, your insights."

Reicher straightened, his voice hardening just enough to show he wasn't easily intimidated. "Already, I have come here without knowledge of travel, swallowed everything you forced me to drink and stowed away my weapons, I will leave here unknowing of the location and without any direct influence in the current state of the Sith, this has nothing to do with politics but rather an injustice to the people of Polis Massa."

Reicher now openly engages with a hardened voice, carrying himself strongly. "There is no chaos, there is harmony. Everything is as it is meant to be. I know the force is real, I know that I cannot touch it, but what if it brought me here to do so? What if I am its agent, and you stand in its way?"

"I understand the nature of this establishment, a place away from the horrors of the galaxy, maybe I hoped that, I could find some peace myself. Direct me to leave and I shall do so without hesitation, but when my people demand answers to why their loved ones died, their fathers were spaced out and their children... their children were..." Reicher paused for a brief moment, the horror flashed before his eyes before he snapped back into reality. "Just know that the Jedi do have a purpose in my vision of the Galaxy, but they won't have a purpose to the people of Polis Massa if they are abandoned."

The best lie is the truth. The Polis Massa incident was horrid, its people would not accept silence on the matter, but Reicher knew that the Jedi could sense his mind and tell for deception, as many Sith had done in the past, so what better than to use the truth. He may have an ulterior motive, but his primary motive was to uncover anything he could, his primary motive was doing this for the sake of justice.

"No." Her word was simple, and to the point. Firm, and solid as a mountain. She showed no sign of intimidation, and stood with her hand on her saber hilt. "The Sith Empire doesn't grant you diplomatic immunity to snoop around our temples. I don't know what happened to the people of Polis Massa, and I pity them, but we are at war with your government currently, and I would be justified to consider this an infiltration of our temple. I ask you to leave only out of a kindness, and I won't give you another warning. Leave, and do not return."

She couldn't help but feel a bit of deja vu in the moment. Her mind flashed back to New Cov, where Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el had done much the same for her back when she was fresh out of the ice.

She knew this place was meant to be a secret, but she couldn't risk letting this sith trooper inflitrate the archives. This man was a spy, plain and simple. She'd be better to send him back to his home than let him wander around. She'd have a word for the knight who allowed this...

Tirin conferred briefly with the towering temple guard. With a subtle nod, the guard stepped aside, allowing Tirin to pass into the archives.

The slender Jedi entered with an unhurried grace, his wine colored robes furling in his wake. His heliotrope orbs settled on the Sith trooper with a measured scrutiny. The weight of his gaze was neither hostile nor welcoming, but a deliberate appraisal of the outsider standing amidst the temple's most sacred repository of knowledge.

Pausing near the accompanying knight, Tirin inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Thank you for your vigilance. I will take it from here," he said, his tone polite but brooking no argument. The knight hesitated for a beat before bowing and departing, leaving them alone.

Tirin's focus returned to Reicher, his expression unreadable as he studied the armored figure.

"You walk a precarious path, stranger." Tirin began, his tone neutral. "The sanctity of this place depends on trust, and trust is not easily given to those who bear the enemies' insignia."

He gestured subtly toward the rows of ancient texts and glowing data terminals.
"You were granted access to these archives under strict terms," he began, his voice calm but edged with a staunch firmness. "Terms that do not include inquiries about students or requests to speak with our Padawans."

He folded his hands in front of him, his stance composed, "Your deviation from the agreed purpose is a breach of trust—an unwelcome and unacceptable one. The safety and sanctity of this temple are paramount, and your actions have jeopardized both and raise concerns..."

Tirin's gaze did not yield as he delivered the final verdict. "You must leave. Now. The privileges extended to you have been rescinded. The guard will escort you from this place, and I strongly suggest you reflect on the significance of trust and boundaries before attempting to set foot in a Jedi temple again. My kindness will not extend a second time."

He gestured subtly toward the doorway, as he ensured the Sith understood the gravity of his dismissal.

Reicher had nothing to say, as to be expected, nothing he was permitted to see implicated the Jedi here in any way. Permitted was the key word, Reicher had no knowledge on advanced concepts of the Force or any other such matters, but from the few documents he saw he already had his next lead. The refusal was to be expected of course, it was not the fault of any particular Jedi, but rather the fact that information for safety and security of all Jedi present had to be hid. The recordings and datapads he had managed to read provided enough to be satisfied with.

He simply dismissed the Jedi and moved to exit the room. "Send my regards to the Padawan, inform him to read Datapad #3012 for more information regarding the practical battlefield applications of his lesson. Its located five pads underneath my testimony on the incident."

He began his exit, moving towards the entrance and taking a seat in a small office, waiting for his weapons to be retrieved. He would never know this world, never know the name of the temple, but he at least now knew something rather fascinating.

He knew the Jedi were not infallible, as he had believed as a young recruit. They could be deceived, they could be distracted. They could be dominated.

But this fighting technique, Tràkata, a pariah to the Sith, something when spoken out loud lead to great dishonor, the Jedi could have a reasonable discussion about.

The Jedi are indeed wise, he could learn much from them.

Maybe in another time.

"Send my regards to the Padawan, inform him to read Datapad #3012 for more information regarding the practical battlefield applications of his lesson. Its located five pads underneath my testimony on the incident."

Jasper stood on the sidelines and watched everything unfold. The Sith agent thought he was smart. Talking about dogmas, implicating that his padawan was above them. It's was amusing. Clearly he had not a single idea what sort of unorthodoxy had lead to the creation of this eatablishment.

And what a zinger of a line to go out on.

"I won't tell him that I was gonna show Braze how to use Trakata in combat," Jasper remarked. "It would probably steal his thunder."

He had learned Trakata at his age after all. Jasper had always taught Braze that any and all advantages should be taken in a fight so long as it wasn't an act of depravity. Decisions like such were what saved lives in war, after all. The young Jedi Master had built the foundation of his operation on that very principle, something he was rather well known for.

"Jeez, that guy was a yapper," the young Master sighed, rubbing his temple. "I think I'll be dead before I meet a Sith ally who doesn't monolog. Frankly, I suggest we just send him on his way and keep his weapons. Less innocents for them to harm."

Jonyna let out a groan, as she watched the sith trooper exit. "Sweet Sylvar, do they all have to talk your ear off?!" she groaned as she looked over to Jasper. "I'd like you to know, I just had the Worst case of deja vu. You remember that weirdo we had to scare off New Cov? Same chit, man." She paused, letting out a laugh. "Sorry, I just...fuckin' sith."

Aether regarded Braze's impassioned response with a deliberate silence, the hum of his internal mechanisms the only sound as he processed the Padawan's words. Finally, the Iron Knight's voice resonated, calm and firm, yet tinged with a note of grudging respect.

"Your conviction is admirable, Braze, and your reasoning is sound... to a point.."

He extended an arm, his durasteel fingers mimicking the grip of a saber hilt. With a flick of his wrist, he ignited his own lightsaber—a pale white blade that buzzed with an eerie serenity. "Tràkata is not mastery. It is not elegance. It is the weapon of one who seeks survival above all else. If survival is your goal, then yes, it has merit. But mastery? Mastery requires a deeper understanding of why you fight, not just how."

The blade extinguished with a hiss, and Aether stepped closer, his towering form casting a shadow over Braze. "You speak of understanding your opponent, and this is wise. But tell me, Padawan, do you understand yourself? Your desires? Your fears? Your limitations?" His tone sharpened, cutting through the moment like the very blade he had just extinguished. "You seek to teach others one day, but how will you guide them if you do not yet know where your own path leads?"

Aether's gaze softened slightly, the glow of his optical sensors dimming. "You are young, and you have much yet to learn—about the galaxy, about combat, and about yourself. I will not forbid you from studying Tràkata. But if you wish to learn it, you will do so under the watchful eye of an instructor. You should explore its strengths, its flaws, and its philosophy. And perhaps, in doing so, you will come to see where it fits—or does not fit—within the foundation you are building."
