The Aspiring Shadow (Daella Apparine)

Silence resumed after Daella gave the command. Several minutes passed. Just as she did yesterday, Daella broke the silence by questioning @[member="Vulpesen"] with, "What did you learn since yesterday about the Jedi Order?"

"So far... I've learned that having a master hurts." Vulpesen considered himself the kind of person who could easily find a deeper meaning in most situations, yet each action yesterday had comprised of things he had already done. In truth, he wasn't sure what his new master was doing. @[member="Daella Apparine"]

"Use only one leg from now on," replied Daella with a flat voice, "You may alternate once a minute."

Then after another few minutes passed, Daella asked one of the exact same questions from yesterday, "Why do you seek to be a Jedi Knight?"

Vulpesen groaned but did as he was told, focusing hard to keep the weights from dipping away from the ceiling. After a long wait, he welcomed the question to move his mind away from the pain in his muscles. "If I'm to create an impact on this galaxy, I'll need to become stronger and smarter. The galaxy isn't changed by a padawan unless he has the power of Anakin Skywalker or the luck of Zayne Carrick. I have a little of both, but not quite enough to do the trick... yet." Vulpesen thought it might have been a bit bold to compare himself to two of the jedi order's most notable members, but he had already been told about his natural strength in the force, and Nar-Shadaa had informed him of his apparent luck.

"Something that will bring the galaxy to a better place. I don't know what, but I'm sure that somehow I can bring about a good change." His right leg ached and he was relieved to change it to his left. As he moved, he checked his crono, watching the seconds tick by until another minute would pass. "What do you intend to do in the order?" He figured that if this person was going to put him through hell to train him, then it might be a good idea to learn something about her. @[member="Daella Apparine"]

"To serve and protect the Republic," quickly replied Daella. Her eyebrows tensed up the moment she said that. Her voice spoke without wavering.

Continuing , Daella then said, "Just as the Jedi before me have done."

Vulpesen nodded. He picked up on her speed, but wasn't quite sure what to think of it yet. With a bit of his curiosity satisfied, he retrained his focus on the exercises, keeping the weights up despite the burning in his calves. @[member="Daella Apparine"]

"To defend the galaxy and keep balance in the force. Or at least, that's what I was taught." Vulpesen had purposely said the galaxy and not the republic, remembering the Abeloth crisis which he had read about on Amar. He wished that his master would give him something other than questions, orders, and cold stares. He thrived in good conversations, but her cold manner was beginning to unnerve him, though he kept this hidden through years of practice in negotiations and tense situations. @[member="Daella Apparine"]

As with the other answers, Daella responded only with silence. She placed her had upon the nearest weight. She did not have to take a single step to do so.

What do you know of the dark side of the Force,” inquired Daella, her eyes focused on the weight.

Vulpesen continued to concentrated without looking in @[member="Daella Apparine"]'s direction, even as he answered the question. "The dark side is mostly used by the sith, and if focuses around passions and self serving. The jedi are the light and thus we are constantlymoving against theevil of the darkside. Despite this, there are a few of us known as gray jedi who walk the line between the line between the light and the dark." Vulpesen himself intended to become one of those grey jedi, but he decided not to tell his master that in fear of what she might say. After all, he had known her for only a day and he barely knew her name, much less anything else about her.

Daella’s eyes shifted to @[member="Vulpesen"] when he answered. Just seconds after his last word, Daella then said, “Relax.

Without missing a beat, Daella stepped back and away from the weight she had placed her hand on.

Once Vulpesen lowered the weights and began to relax, Daella then said, “There’s much for you to learn.

Then, Daella turned to the exit and began to walk. She did not clean up the weights.

Make sure the equipment is back where it needs to be,” she told Vulpesen as she turned back for a second, “And be at the northern docking platform at dawn. Bring enough food for a day.

Vulpesen looked at @[member="Daella Apparine"] with a curious gaze. "Yes master." Once again, he had found her to be elusive, and this lack of understanding was beginning to get to him. Vulpesen had spent his entire life learning and understanding that which he did not know at first, and his lack of progress with a person he was supposed to be studying under was beginning to become annoying as well as unnerving. Still, he realized that she was the more experienced and thus he went about his work, using the force to move the weights into their places. The task was easier now that he could focus himself entirely on this task. "Exactly who is she?" He wondered to himself as he finished with the weights. Apparently he had more to learn about than just the force.

Vulpesen arrived once again only a few minutes after @[member="Daella Apparine"], however this time I have a small holocom in my hand which displays a fox like being. "I know master, I'm still alive, and I promise I'll return when its time." Vulpesen looked up to see Daella sitting in her seat. "I have to go, I'll call again later." Vulpesen shut down the holo and sat infront of his current master. "May I ask where we're going?"

A borough not far from here,” quickly replied Daella without looking at @[member="Vulpesen"].

When Vulpesen boarded the shuttle, the doors latched shut and the aircraft ascended into the air. It wove in an out of the Coruscanti skyline and away from the massive Jedi Temple.

Then, Daella turned to the Padawan and apologized with, “I’m sorry if things seem strange. You’re the first person I’ve tried to train, and I’m just using how I was trained on you.

Just as usual, Daella took a silent pause as she looked to the side before turning back to Vulpesen and warning him with, “You should probably know this before continuing any further in your training, though. You aren’t wrong with how you answered my questions. Nor were you giving me the answers I sought.

Once again, Daella paused in silence. Her gaze deviated again. Still looking away, Daella then said, “An important answer to know is that of the dangers of the dark side of the Force. You didn’t really address that.

Vulpesen looked up at his master. Finally he was beginning to understand, and he was happy to have the information she had given. "That's because I don't believe the dark side is inherently evil. I've studied Jedi of the past and some of the greatest users of the force used the dark side with the light. I realize that I'm not experienced enough to dabble in it, and that it does have a strong tendency to turn its practitioners to evil ways. However, I also believe that the dark side's passion also gives a power that can be used for good by an experienced master."

Vulpesen was aware that his thoughts were dangerous, but he'd been purposely raised by his father to follow the grey side of the force. The decision to join the Jedi was not out of love for the light, but for love of good. "The Sith are wrong to pursue their passions of hate and rage to their own ends at the expense of others and I believe they must be stopped because of that. But the jedi are not completely righteous either. Nine-hundred years ago, it was forbidden to marry in the order. I know it's odd to think of at my age and training, but I believe that though the jedi are correct in using their abilities for others, their serenity can be used against them as it fails to give them a reason to fight for others." When Vulpesen came to the temple, he had no friends or contacts, and thus he found himself spending five weeks alone inside the meditation rooms where he would train himself in the force. His meditations often led to thoughts as these and developed his belief in the force. He was proud to be a jedi, but he was not the kind of person to follow blindly into a life that was pre-planned. @[member="Daella Apparine"]

As @[member="Vulpesen"] spoke, Daella’s gaze did not drift from her Padawan. She silently listened until his last sentence. Then, she looked to the side of a second. Her stoic face remained as ever.

Once she had formulated an answer, Daella returned her focus to Vulpesen and replied with, “You seem a bit of history. Yet if that was sufficient to know the Force, then you wouldn’t need any guidance.

Raising her right hand in a gesture, as if holding something, Daella said, “Imagine the dark side of the Force as a toxic drug.

Then once Daella sat her hand back down in her lap, she continued with, “You always have the choice to take it or not. To use the dark side, you suffer just as if it was a drug. Addiction settles instantly. Then, it destroys the mind and body. Whatever benefits you thought it could have are ultimately outweighed by the costs, one of which being the corruption of whatever innocent and selfless goals you might have had before the conversion.

Then with another gesture, this time with her left hand, Daella said, “For your own reasons, you seek to help the galaxy. Yet, that will never happen if you use the dark side.

Vulpesen thought this over for his a moment before nodding in acceptance. He understood the dangers and his master's words. Despite agreeing on most points, he decided to hold finality for a latter date. Though, he would shelf any ideas of practice on dark side abilities. "Will we be meeting somewhere at our destination?" He asked, looing for a change in subject. @[member="Daella Apparine"]
