The Ballad of Mona Lisa [Corvus]

sorry for the long delay! home renovations got the better of me!!

By a rule of thumb, Kian rarely trusted people. His fellow Jedi, yes, but most people....no. It was a habit that he'd learned over the years of his work with the Jedi Shadows....but even if he weren't the paranoid type, he certainly wouldn't typically consider putting any amount of trust, no matter how slight, in a Sith.

But...

Kian trusted Grandmaster Raaf more than most and it was for this reason that he was here. She had entertained the words of the Sith so far, who was he to not give him the same courtesy.

"Interesting." Kian said running his hand along the spikes on his antiox mask as he considered the proposal. The saying that the enemy of my enemy is my friend came to mind, but Kian had always thought that a flawed notion that typically backfired on the one employing it. But the One Sith were certainly a menace to be dealt with and any edge they might gain over them might be worth consideration.

"I suppose I would need to know a few things." Kian said turning toward Corvus as he spoke. "For one, I'd want to know more about the motivations for such a decision for a Sith to make.....I'd want to know in what capacity he wished to serve," Kian said turning back to him as he spoke, "and I'd want to know how he intended to aid us." Kian said.

"But all of that might be a mute point." Kian said shrugging. "We are beholden to the Galactic Republic, and while a recommendation from us might be considered....our word is not law."

"Having a Sith aid in the war effort might not be something the Galactic Republic Senate or armed branches is willing to except....even if we were to." Kian said, not saying that that was where they stood, but pointing out something that needed to be considered.

Corvus nodded as Kian spoke. He underestimated his eloquence. Deciding if the Sith could be an ally of the Republic was not in their gift. Deciding he could be an ally of the Order was and recent conversations with the Prime Minister meant they could petition her to allow the Sith to support them in any military endeavour.

But now was not the time for words - Kian had already asked enough questions to keep their guest busy for a while. And besides, she was wondering what tiling grout was doing under the Kel-Dor's nails. A question for another time perhaps?

Disciple gave [member="Kian Karr"] only the barest look from the corner of his eye. But regardless of his apparent indifference to the Kel-Dor's words, he verbally wheeled on the Shadow like a boxer bringing a haymaker to bear. "Beholden?" The words were acid, and would melt durasteel if given the chance. "You are your own Masters. The Order is not the Republic's lap dog, and you would do best, Master, to remember your history a little better."

The droid shifted its features into one of distinct displeasure, lips curling as if taking a whiff of something offensive and mildly unpleasant - though not entirely repugnant. "Sith are the territory of the Jedi - it is the business of empires to fight other governments. It is the business of Jedi to fight against corruption, both within their allies and without.'"

His head turned back to scanning the nearby crowds. His sharp tone now gone. "I am sure Master Raaf can fill you in, given time. Your words have soured my mood."

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

"Try to imagine my immense disappointment at that realization." Kian said dryly in reference to the notion that he had somehow dampened the Sith Lord's mood, his voice thick with sarcasm.

"And while I am especially interested in the eradication of the Sith, there is nothing in the Jedi Code related to them." Kian said shrugging. "Our duties are to the Republic, first and foremost. Do we oppose the Sith as guardians of the lightside of the Force, absolutely. Is it the cornerstone of what it is to be a Jedi, certainly not." Kian said turning to Master [member="Corvus Raaf"] and smiling beneath his mask.

"However," Kian said raising a hand, "There is precedent in Jedi and Sith working together." Kian said, "I'm sure you are aware of it more so than I, given your propensities for absorbing historical knowledge!"

"I see nothing wrong with him aiding the Republic under a number of scenarios. First, the Republic Prime Minister and Senate would need to be ok with it, Second he would have to follow Republic laws throughout his time with us. There could be no executions, no killing of innocents, no breaking of the law." Kian said and turned toward him as he said this.

"Is that something you'd feel comfortable with agreeing too?" Kian knew a number of Sith who would likely be able to do this, but this was the first time Kian and this particular Sith had met, and Kian was unsure of his disposition.

Corvus was aware that the Sith could go straight to the Prime Minister and she would decide if he were to be an ally or not. That had always been the case and she saw no likelihood it would change soon. Dark Jedi had allied to the Republic on Kashyyyk with disastrous consequences - as their living weapons had been turned against the Republic.

So this was not about allowing the Sith Lord to ally with the Government, it was about engaging him with the Order itself. And as positively as she looked to consider the option, she could not shake the feeling on unease. But she would allow Kian to continue his line of questioning. He was, after all, the one to rely upon to ensure the Jedi's security. She, on the other hand, felt it was her duty to uphold its integrity.

Disciple gave what amounted to the droid version of a derisive snort. "Your ability to use sarcasm is noted." Head tilting momentarily, his head turned to regard [member="Kian Karr"] with a smile that said 'I'm trying to be reassuring' but actually said 'I've skinned your relatives.'

The reasoning for this followed a moment later. "Why, Master Karr, I've never broken a law in my life."

[member="Corvus Raaf"]

Kian turned his head and examined the "man" for a moment before turning back to the Grandmaster. "If the Senate and Military gives the okay, then I don't see an issue." Kian reiterated.

"However," Kian said clasping his hands behind his back.

"If he isn't here to go through the rehabilitation process, we can't allow him to have any interaction with the Jedi Padawans." Kian was concerned about the influence of a dark sider on the minds of those developing their abilities in the force, not to mention their safety around a Sith. The younglings and padawans were their charges to protect.

"Any interaction with the Jedi Order would need to be peripheral." Kian said, "I wouldn't suggest allow a Sith, who isn't interested in rehabilitation, to come to the Academies without being under.....lock and key." Kian said glancing back to the man as he spoke. Perhaps it was Kian's duties as a Shadow, but he certainly didn't trust a Sith that wasn't interested in not being a Sith.

Corvus surveyed the two of them. "This could have gone better, but perhaps this was as good as it was ever going to get."

She faced the Sith Lord. "Information that you can provide is certainly welcome. If we see you on the battle-field and you're fighting Sith we'll certainly join the fight in capturing them. Beyond that..." Her voice tapered off, clearly thinking it through.

"We are Jedi and as Kian says, there is precedent. Do you wish us to investigate the possibility of the Senate agreeing to you cooperating us. And if they agree, do you accept that there would be quite stringent conditions?"

[member="Kian Karr"] | [member="Disciple"]

"I've no interest in your children." The droid says with venom dripping from the mechanical voice. "I need only put the Sith in their place." His attention went back to surveying the Temple, mind wandering to all the One Sith who still carried a banner they should have never laid claim to. "Perhaps Hauntress will finally get what she wants. Quality time with me, although I doubt she expected to find it on the opposite side of the field."

That drew a smile onto his face.

Yes, he wanted to rain on their parade. With some alchemically enhanced acid. His answers weren't technically answers, but they were technically getting what they wanted out of him.

At the mention of Darth Hauntruss, Kian turned toward the Sith. Since his earliest days among the Jedi, Hauntruss had been a major thorn in his side. He had witnessed her horrific deeds on Ossus, had faced off against her on Kashyyyk and then Dorin, and had been hunting her ever since he took over the duties of Master of the Shadows. Of all the Sith Kian hunted.....she was at the top of his list.

"Darth Hauntruss..." Kian said, turning his head sideways to examine the Sith more cautiously. "If she is someone you wish to see destroyed....then you and I have something in common."

[member="Disciple"]

Corvus listened to the conversation. It felt more like a dance to her, a duel almost. Not that they were opposed but each side seemed to be sizing the other up. It was certainly tense and slightly awkward.

At the mention of a shared goal, Corvus was unsure if this was a positive or a negative move. For sure, they'd both like to see a certain Sith Lord out of the picture, but to go too far down the road of thinking alike, Corvus felt it was a slippery slope.

"We have an agreed foe. And with that in mind, we just need to be clear about our own rules of engagement. Protocols, rules, you know the sort of thing."

[member="Kian Karr"] | [member="Disciple"]

"Do they need to be in writing? My fine motor skills still need some testing to make sure they're... functioning properly." There was a shifting of the face that would resemble a pursing of the lips, but as he had no lips, it was only a facsimile. "What would you need for peace of mind, Grandmaster."
