"Sir, we're detecting a large power increase from the enemy ships, they may be about to open fire on--"
A nearly blinding flash of light cut the Lieutenant off. A half dozen beams of crimson light shot from the Mawite ships, arcing towards the Alliance Flotilla.
And for a moment, I was back at Csilla. Watching helplessly from the bridge of the
Hawk as the Mawite superweapon decimated the Alliance fleet, killing thousands in an instant. Ripping families apart, annihilating without mercy. Men and women I'd served with for years, who I'd become friends with, all gone in the blink of an eye. The deafeningly silent bridge in the wake of the blast, staring at the devastation it left.
"The Warspite! It's-"
A cry on the bridge broke me from my memory.
Aboard the ANV Warspite, concurrent.
Captain Radiel in command.
“Captain! We have incoming!”
“Boost power to shields, now!”
A near panic gripped the bridge of the vessel. Though not the flag, the
Warspite was by far the largest and most powerful vessel in the Flotilla. Which of course, made it a target. But Captain Radiel had lived through many engagements in command of this cruiser, and it was a ship he was determined not to lose.
“Hard dive!”
The massive ship lurched forward, attempting to move below the incoming fire. It’s poor maneuverability would have doomed any attempt to dodge the attack, but that wasn’t what the Bothan captain was attempting to do. With just enough of an angle, some of the attack would be deflected upwards, further improving the chance of survival.
Impact. The whole ship shook, even under the mighty Mon Calamari shielding. Each viewport was filled with a blinding light, dazzling the bridge crew. Some spoke silent prayers, others thought of their friends and families. Radiel simply closed his eyes, and gripped his command chair tightly. There was nothing more he could do now.
Then the glow faded, klaxons blared. A collective sigh of relief escaped the lips of the crew. The shields had held, just barely.
ANV Revenge
Rear Admiral Constantine Oliva in command
“The Warspite’s held!”
“Status report?”
“Her shields are heavily weakened, but they’re holding. Several nearby vessels took light shield damage too, sir.”
“Very good, maintain the assault. Anything from the scanners?”
“Well sir, the enemy ships seem to follow old Imperial design doctrine--Their rears are heavily exposed. Judging on the amount of comms traffic, we believe we’ve also identified the enemy command ship.”
“Good. Send the 253rd’s Emancipators on a wide flanking move to attack the enemy’s rear. I want them to stay out of range until they’re in position to attack. Send Wasp and Ceres to protect them from any fighter attacks.”
“Yessir.”
Staring out from
Revenge's bridge, I kept my eye trained forward, watching as the long range engagement continued. In the distance, tiny flares of light marked the fighter engagement. The three vessels that had long served as the 253rd's main source of firepower were moving, turning hard to starboard to move out on their task. Something kept bothering me in the back of my head though.
"Signal the long range comms centers. I want to know if any enemy signals are coming to the system, as soon as they happen. I want bearing, amount, intensity."
