The Feedback and Critique Section

To be blunt, what's the point? 9/10 people tell the OP how awesome they are and provide no incentive to actually get better. The 1/10 who say anything are usually dismissed as a 'hater' or ignored.

Ergo, the sub-forum doesn't live up to what it sets out to do. I would ask that the section be either removed or reformed with a more objective method of review. This is with the intention of actually providing feedback that a writer interested in improving could work upon.

The 'feedback and critique' section could very well be renamed to the 'Tell me how great my character is and why' and none but the Gods would know the difference. Not that having a good time complimenting people and whatnot is a intrinsically negative thing, but the reluctance to actually critique characters should give away to cultivating a open community where everyone seeks to be honest in helping one another to improve instead of, frankly, a circle jerk.

Critique does not mean solely bringing forth negative points or advice on getting better. While it certainly includes those two 'functions', it also serves to recognize merit where it is due. All, of course, in the form of an opinion.

That said, if a critic only brings forth only 'how OP is awesome' could either mean that the critic only sees positive points or cannot evaluate well enough, which I think is the problem you want addressed. Yet, it is impossible to find out whether the critic does only see positive points or cannot evaluate well enough.

People here are friendly with each other, and that means they like to compliment each other.
Typically, you open up a critique by offering a couple compliments, so it doesn't seem like you hate what's being offered for critique. If everyone was brusque and to-the-point with each other, this would be a rather unfriendly place.

Besides, even if there's too many compliments going around, that's not really something anyone can regulate. If you just want critique, then say up front you just want critique, and to keep the compliments to a minimum.

Yeah, I've seen this work EXTREMELY well in the past. I've seen threads where the person asking for feedback has said 'things I can improve on only, please' and that's just what they got. Definitely doable if you state outright what you'd like. No compliments/GIF's please. Okay, some GIF's.

I think that the only people usually qualified to give detailed critiques of another is someone who already writes with them.

In order to write with someone you need to already be comfortable with them.

Thus, critiques are not so much repressing feedback as they are rarely offering it for those outside that writer's circle.

However, there are ways to be helpfully critical, and I do hope that people can see that it's fine to be critical, so long as there's no malice there and that it's constructive.

Supply & Demand.

People love putting up "Give me Feedback" threads. Thusly... A forum to catch them was created. Indeed. I might argue that the forum does it's job admirably. Catching all the many "Give me Feedback" threads that would otherwise clutter larger forums.

And no. I have qualms with this community lack of achievement in scholarly critique. After all. This is no scholarly forum. God help it, no. If my RP partners can just get their spelling and punctuation right 50% of the time I find myself honor-bound to be contented with their reply. Critique be damned.

Supply & Demand. If Tef doesn't mind letting all the numerous and eternal "Give me Feedback" threads flowing up and out into larger forums? Then so be it. Let the sub-forum die and the migration begin.

After all. Deleting the sub-forum will not delete or diminish our communities need for monthly 'circle jerks', 'MotMs', or 'Give me Feedback' threads. We might even start asking for more. (circle jerks I mean... Nobody reads that MotM thing.) (Sorry MotMs. We still love you.)
