Private The Ferryman

Makko's expression was torn between genuine concern and an appreciation of the word 'flutin'.

He supposed that had been the point. The man didn't look like he told the story because he wanted sympathy.

"Sorry, that's a bit chit. Denon wouldn't be a fun trip," he reflected, leaving it at that.

Makko rolled another set. A total of twenty eight across six dice. He offered an indifferent shrug.

"Sorry, I tend to take time to lean things," he said, indifferent to the fact that he was rolling consistently in the top ten percent of the probability distribution.

"Can I stay a while and...wait...I'm not hurting you right now am I?"

"Believe it or not, I have set foot in a bar on Denon. I was drugged to the gills. And no, one person's no worse than a hangnail. Jedi Council, stubbed toe. You can stay as long as you like, read as much as you want. Hell, take your time with this place until it feels comfortable and you can find your own answers to things. Make your own options. Take the room marked GUEST ROOM. I think Tiland Kortun Tiland Kortun left some good tea in there a while back, broaden your palate while you're at it."

Quill sucked his teeth in thought.

"If you give your word on something serious, you keep it?"

It was more than he'd expected from this visit, his optimism had faltered upon setting his eyes on the remote homestead.

Quill had been patient. Makko had recent experience of broken promises. Fractal State had replaced his family, but everything had come at a cost. He'd been groomed by a gang, nothing had been offered for free.

That reflection changed how he saw Quill and it shaped his answer.

"I do," Makko replied. "With a stubborn streak too."

"But...tea is just like, slightly flowery warm water. I wouldn't want to waste 'good' tea."

He had once suffered a wuthering glare for describing tea in that way. He dared to do so again.

"Eh," said Quill with a straight face, "depends how much sugar you add."

He chewed on the next bit, weighed it.

"Just promise you'll keep this place to yourself, only talk about it with folks you trust. I get a new visitor like you once or twice a year, and that's all fine. Sometimes people come looking for power, or don't respect what they find. They see shelves full of alien knickknacks. They don't see a library like the fancy Jedi kind. Sometimes that...hell, let's call it human-centered arrogance makes them discount things or do..." He gestured vaguely. "I'm rambling. Bottom line, I don't care what flag they fly, what color their saber is, how righteous they talk - you promise you'll only talk about this place if you really know and trust'em."
