The White Cliffs: Salvaging Construct One
Karen popped open the roof hatch and pulled herself out from the long darkness below. The beautiful light of day was, I dare say, blinding. Up here, the smell of the sea and chiming of the gulls was a blast of fresh air. She smiled and breathed it all in. It was breathtaking.
"...Roberts? Ha! About darn time you showed up. Where the mark have you been?"
Captain Guile. White male in this late forties. Lifelong colonial military turned Protectorate man. Apparently, this wasn't his favorite mission so far. Go figure.
"Sorry sir. I was climbing. What's the news."
"Miles! Bring her up to speed. And get me that radio!"
"Yes sir! ...Ahem. Ma'am? If you'll follow me. The Captain has the FOB on the horn. We're still working on getting everything settled out here."
"Understandable Lieutenant. How are our numbers?"
"We're still counting. With half the ship and her crew down on the beach? It could take awhile. ...Look. See down there. We're pulling all the equipment out from the hull and getting it prepped from transit. Surprisingly, the Engineers say most of the equipment is salvageable. It will just take time to pull it all out. We're counting it as we go."
"And the medics?"
"Ah. You mean casualties? Yes, I know. We've restored power to the med bays and are helping as many people as we can. Truthfully it's a blessing in disguise. We didn't lose any doctors."
"All right. I see. Well then. I'll head down to the floor and help the teams with the salvage operations. But once we get everything pulled out, we'll need a place to store it?"
"The Captain is working with Command already. I think all of our gear is already tasked to operations around the Peninsula. The trick is getting it there without being late to the party. Sorry ma'am. But I don't think we'll be needing any warehouses."
"It's fine. It's fine. ...Thanks for the sit-rep. Tell the Captain we'll be working as hard as we can to get everything out of the ship and out to where it needs to be. That broken section of the ship down by the beach will just have to wait for now."
"Understood Commander. And sorry for the rush. But, god speed and Force be with you. We'll be in touch."
The young Lieutenant gave a quick salute and returned to the Captain's side. Karen sighed and looked out over the great expanse from which she towered like an eagle. From the top of this smashed ship you could see everything. It was like being on top of the world. It made her smile one last time as she reached for her com,
"Kyles? You reading me? You still alive down there soldier."
"Oi. Yes ma'am. We're all here. What's the situation?"
"It's complicated. ...Meet me on the ground near deck twelve. We're on off-loading duty. Let's get this baby unpacked by nightfall. Commander over and out."
She switched off her wrist com and approached the edge of the ship. The view was amazing. Though, it was a long way down to deck twelve. Climbing back down the way she came, just wouldn't do. So she giggled and spread her arms to the sun. Ah. Just smell that air. It was magnificent. ...Just like old times.
She smiled effortlessly, closed her eyes, and stepped off the bridge. Drifting down, down, into the endless sky.
One more day to go.
