The Je'daii Order, Chapter One: Sanctuary

The construction of Akar Kesh on Bakura had been very much a group effort. Overseen by [member='Sargon Vynea'], who at the time had governed the outlying world, the Temple was a labour of love, and all the Je'daii who had banded together back then had shared in its creation. By hand, through the Force, it had taken quite some time. But it was a wonder to behold, worth every moment.
It has been quite some time since any Je'daii stepped foot within its halls. Today would mark an end to that period, for a group from the Order had come to see how the place fared. While nothing would ever replace The Silent Temple, having a safe house for Je'daii Rangers to utilize would prove beneficial.
And it would be a shame to let such a structure go to waste.
Any from the Order was granted permission to join the scouting party. Will you be one of them?

Asha blinked through the glare of midsummer sun which cut through the sterile, bleak interior of the vessel they stood within. For weeks they had journeyed across the Galaxy, from Teth to Bakura, and it seemed as though their eyes needed time to adjust to planetside life again. At least hers did.

Alongside her were several others. Some she knew by name, such as her dear friend Jyn, her sister Kyra, and the former Jedi [member='Stephanie Swail']. Others had been strangers before this excursion. All were kindred spirits. Master Aotirr had decided to take this journey alongside them, much to the displeasure of Shor Vo. Every day the Miraluka seemed to be worsening, yet her optimism knew no bounds.

"My, the Force paints a pretty picture of this land."

The sickly woman smiled a genuine smile, one which pulled at her already taut skin, and gestured down the boarding ramp.

"Shall we?"

Together with Shor, the Force Master descended the ramp and breathed in the crisp air. She was right, this world was exquisitely beautiful, boasting rolling hills and a diminished population. Though it had been taken over by a foreign government, having held its own authority for a very long time through the Fringe and even before their days, it remained mostly untouched by their influence.

Asha glanced to Jyn and the others, before skipping her way down too. The last time she had been here the construction of Akar Kesh had been in full swing. It was her return to the Galaxy, her first time seeing [member='Jericho'] since Aellin released her back into the wild... And it had gone so horribly wrong.

Today the circumstances were entirely different.

Compared to most Temples in the Galaxy, Akar Kesh was remarkably... Open. In honour to the original Tho Yor, it was single story and was composed of pillars, the structure open topped. Living quarters could be found beneath, hewn into the mountain they were currently stood upon, with spectacular views from the side. Not that you could tell as much just by looking at it.

When preparing for this journey, Asha had taken aside her friend and spoke about the Force User she had met on Korriban, the one who had been wavering, uncertain, lost within the throws of the Force. Much to her surprise, Jyn had approved his journey here, and true to her word the Lorrdian had contacted him with the location.

Would he come, though, this stranger? Would he honor his word, and learn of the Je'daii Order?

Little did the young girl know, that [member='Connor Harrison'] was not a stranger to all who had made the pilgrimage this day.

Down the ramp shot Sobaan. While the others were busy focusing on the temple, and he did understand the importance of the place, he was preoccupied with a small rodent that had hitched a ride upon their ship, journeying across the galaxy with them. When the hatch had opened, it had darted out, and now he was following after it. The little hunter, or Actaeon as his mother called him, couldn't help himself. A target had presented itself, and now he had no choice but to go and chase it down. He ran past Fire Lady and the others, darting away from them and chasing the small critter as it, miraculously, swerved and ran towards the temple. Darned thing was wily!

He was completely oblivious to the fact that [member="Connor Harrison"] and [member="Kyra Sol"] both had a history with his father. Would the former recognize him as the offspring of the one called Ignus? Time would tell, but he had literally no idea who the man was, just that he kind of felt like his father did, in a way.

"Come back!"

He didn't have his bow with him so he couldn't shoot the rodent and claim his kill. Well, he could, but he didn't know if it would be a good idea to show everyone what he'd learned to do by accident back when fooling around out of his mothers gaze. He'd only been practicing the motion of shooting! It wasn't his fault he'd figured out how to make the Force do the shooting! He hadn't even told his mother about it, yet. He didn't know if she'd approve of it because it was dangerous. He'd destroyed a tree by accident, after all! No, he couldn't show them that yet, so he just chased it.

"Hey, watch it!"

Stephanie twisted as young [member="Sobaan Palle"] darted past her chasing a rodent. With a small roll of the eyes and a shake of the head, she never-the-less found it amusing, getting to know people a little more.

She still felt out of the loop, but at the same time felt she was learning more and more.

The face of [member="Jyn Sol"] she recognised, and respected. She hadn’t spoken to her, but if she was the Master of these Je’daii, then she would listen and learn and follow. As for her [member="Kyra Sol"] – the lifeline she clung to - she knew where she was without looking.

Maybe she had put too much faith in Ky being there for her, but she felt things she couldn’t understand. Like on Jakku; she felt Kyra’s emotion and her hopes and fears. It had been an unsettling moment, but a powerful one not to ignore. Now, she was eager to develop more of what was inside and become, finally, a Jedi in training.

Stephanie kept herself to herself for now, greeting those she saw with warm smiles and bright eyes, as she waited.

Bakura. Two reasons to visit the planet; one, to honour his deal with young [member="Asha Hex"] to see her little group of Je’daii, and the other to deal with matters pertaining to a more political matter. But that could wait for now.

Right now he was here to see the Je’daii.

Connor had landed on the edge of the large construction that looked like a temple, but also some place of worship? There was activity below he could see, and he sat in the cockpit for a moment looking up to this Akar Kesh. A deal was a deal.

He made his way out of the ship and felt the cool air around him, crisp and fresh. The Force was strong here, and he felt somehow at home. Not smothered in darkness or light. Just the Force.

Walking up a grassy incline that led around to the structure, and he saw many people of many species and sexes, young and old. Definitely a cult.

He was well aware of how he’d look – the dark grey tunic, the crimson cowl, the scar under his eye, the crossguard lightsaber hilt. He didn’t exactly look like a beacon of hope in these troubled times, but then he didn’t know what the Je’daii even considered to be a beacon. He was just here to make good on his word, and see what it was all about.

He edged through the gathering on the outskirts to find the small figure of Asha coming from a part of the site.

"Asha," he called out.

Connor inclined his head and gave a small wave.

"Well, this is cosy. I’m here. So, now what."

Jyn had taken a back seat on this excursion; this had been Asha's devising, chiefly among her reasons was a Force User she had encountered, but also a path of healing. It would do her good to make amends with the world of Bakura after how it had treated her last time. For the rest of the Je'daii, this was simply a reminder of their roots. Of where things had once begun.

Master Aotirr was leading the troupe, and down the ramp they wandered. Little Sobaan ducked and dived between everyone, intent on catching the rodent he had found mid-flight. The boy was determined, she would give him that, though why he felt the need to chase the poor thing she had no idea. Children would be children, and she wasn't about to take that from him.

Her gaze fell over the group. Compared to their numbers, it was small. Their ship had been simple, civilian in nature as would be expected from a sect of what was effectively scholars, and their presence here insignificant as always. They were not looking to intrude upon the world, which was why Sargon had built Akar Kesh so far from civilization. It called to her, it was home to her.

She smiled, and followed the rest of the group onto land. Her eyes lingered over the standing stones which jutted from the rock, appearing part of the natural landscape. It held wonder, intrigue, it flowed with the Force. It was, in a word, beautiful.

"I shall fetch refreshments from the bunker" she said, with a gentle smile. There had been provisions aplenty beneath the Temple, and a natural spring ran through the mountainside. Just a quick stop off, to ensure everything remained in working order, a history lesson and whatever teachings Aotirr had in mind, and they would leave as swiftly as they had come.

[member="Connor Harrison"] [member="Stephanie Swail"] [member="Sobaan Palle"]

Life. That was what made up the Temple of Akar Kesh.

Even without their presence here it was ingrained into the soil, hewn into the rocks, swirled through the air. Young Sobaan was the first to actually touch ground, being that he ducked and dived and weaved his way through everybody, much to the amusement of most, but the rest were just as quick to follow.

Toward the stone structure they wandered, though Asha lingered on the edge of the crowd. She watched as Jyn descended into the sunken bunker which was mostly invisible unless you knew where to look; refreshments sounded like a great idea. She was tired of the ships rations.

When a voice made itself known however, one which did not belong to any from this small party of Je'daii, she turned and peered toward [member='Connor Harrison']. So he had come, then, he had honoured his word? That spoke volumes.

"Hello again, Mister Harrison." She inclined her head back in respect, and when she looked upon him again a small smile pulled at her lips. "I must say, I am glad you did not choose to remain within the shadows. Come, I knew of no better place to call you to than here. Welcome to Akar Kesh, the Temple of Balance."

While the others busied themselves with setting up camp for the night, Asha walked around them and to the standing stones. The Force swirled here, comfortingly like a blanket, neither light or dark fighting for dominance. Both at peace with the presence of the other.

"Sit, if it please you, or stand. It matters not."

Asha did not see the expression of Jyn's sister when she descended the ship in surprise. She did not witness her jaw drop. She was focused on the man she had promised to show the way of Balance, after all... Why would he know any here?

Kyra was among the last to leave the ship, owing to the fact that Kyne had come along with her. The pup was erratic, no doubt due to the little rodent which taunted his every waking hour, so she had spent some extra time calming him down after the ramp lowered. No biggy. While she had never been to this Temple before, nor Bakura itself, she had been assured of its beauty. Well, such things could wait where mans best friend was concerned.

"Alright pup, it's alright. Let's spread your legs, huh? A nice run?"

Kyne jumped up to lick her cheek, before following her out into the sunny afternoon. No sooner had she stepped two feet down the ramp however than a name she had not heard in some time resonated within her ear. Harrison? As in, Connor Harrison? Certainly not.

She looked around in confusion, and while Kyne waited obediently at her side he whimpered all the same with a longing to run free.

"Let me take him?" a child offered, one of Asha's little orphans, and with a nod she gave her permission. Kyne ran after the young girl without hesitation, he was a good pup he wouldn't stray too far.

One step, two step, she could feel her heart hammering in her chest as she stared at the back of Asha's head. Then saw the profile of another, someone she had not expected to see in a million years.

Her gaze tore from them, seeking out Steph in the crowd. She needed her strength, her support. But she couldn't find the words she needed to gain her friends attention.

This was a mistake. She couldn't see him like this, not now. She wasn't ready.

Connor nodded, looked around once and kept his head down a little. Not that he didn't stick out anyway. He stood beside [member="Asha Hex"] as she spoke.

"Asha, you know this place is in First Order territory, right? And they are more akin to the Dark Side than anything else? Well, their sect of Force warriors are anyway. I may be going soft, but I don't want to lead trouble to your door." He gave a small smile. He edged through the gathering on the outskirts to find the small figure of Asha coming from a part of the site. "But thank you for the welcome. I always make good on my word. Please."

He indicated for her to make herself comfortable, as he would stand. It wasn't a place he was too comfortable with, only for his own sake, nobody else's. Who knew what he would see here, or how he would think.

With people milling around, and a ship docked letting people off, Connor swept the faces.

"Do you know all these people? Are they lost, or are they like you. Set on a path no matter what?"

Stephanie laughed to herself and clapped. A young girl was picking up fruit with the Force, and near juggling it, all for show.

Kneeling down, she held her hand out to catch one, and started to do the same. Moving the fruit with the Force in a circle, eyes closed. She concentrated a great deal for such a simple task, but she did it. However, she soon dropped them.

The little girl laughed and pushed Stephanie back, who fell on her behind with a pout, but a warm smile.

Picking herself up, she tussled the girl's hair and stood, glancing around as the next ship came in behind and docked. More people were arriving at this wondrous place, and she was eager to see them all. But most of all, [member="Kyra Sol"] who came out last with her pup.

Hurrying forward, making sure not to bump into anyone, Stephanie reached out to grab Ky's hands with both of hers, but then it hit her when she saw her face.

The pit in her stomach. The fear and the anxious cloud hanging over her. Fear.

"Kyra? Kyra what's wrong?"

She put her arm around her shoulder and moved her to the side away from the ramp as it closed.

"Tell me what's happend...I'm here, it's ok. You're ok. What's wrong?"

Her hand rubbed Kyra's back gently.

Sobaan was busy chasing the rodent, and everyone else was largely lost to him. When one is hunting, one does not pay attention to the non-hunters who are not prey. He chased the critter all the way into the temple proper, and he managed to catch it, but not without it putting up a fight.

"Ouch!"

His voice was probably heard by the others outside of the temple, or at least [member="Jyn Sol"], who was making her way off to find some snacks or something else. She was a good hostess, the Fire Lady. Sobaan held his quarry in both hands, a minor trace of blood dripping from one finger where the bugger had managed to bite him. It squirmed like crazy in his grasp, but his grip was tight enough to keep it from escaping him. With his quarry caught, he went back to the others and held it up for them all to see, feeling rather proud of himself. The hunter had captured his prey! They had to be proud of him for doing so. Rats were a nuisance, after all. He might have eaten all their snacks and that wasn't good!

"I got him!"

But Fire Lady wasn't there and he looked around somewhat confused, wondering where she'd gone off to. [member="Connor Harrison"] might see a resemblance in him to a certain Sith, but Sobaan had no idea who the man was, just that he stank of darkness to him. He edged a little away.

Bakura, it was like going home again. Memories and emotions swelled in the Zabrak to the point of breaking as he breathed out, emptying his cup with a grin. He'd governed this world for years under the flag of the Fringe, even after it had left he still Governed it for a time. Eventually though he'd known it was time to walk away. He returned to it now a stranger though there had been no way to hide his name, or ship when landing. The First Order knew nothing of him really though as far as he knew, and the few messages he got we all from old government and retired military, and various invitations to see old friends.

He'd politely declined but with a heavy heart, it would have been nice to see old faces. He had however taken the time out to return to his old home before joining the others. A small single story house in the middle of a field, nothing much to the outside eye, but it was home. The building itself was empty of course, he'd stuffed the entire thing inside of his ship before leaving. Well he'd left one token behind, a piece of history for Bakura to remember, a Fringe flag across most of one of the interior walls. One day someone would be curious and look inside, and just maybe it would keep the memory alive, maybe.

After a short stay he left with only the briefest backward glances, Bakura had moved on, and he could only hope it was for the better. He hadn't still, and didn't know if he ever would. Even the Temple was part of his time on this planet, carved into a cliff side, and protected deep under the surface the temple waited for new students. Jyn had made good her dedication to the Je'daii and returned with them, and he needed to be here to finish unlocking the complex at the least.

He didn't expect to be needed for much more, but he would be here for support. It seemed he was of some need though, or at least someone needed his support as he came from the back of the group. He didn't involve himself verbally, as he saw what he could only assume was a friend help the troubled girl. With the ease of years of practice though he let the Force flow through him and into [member="Kyra Sol"]. Peace, like a river flowed from him as he pooled support around her. Perhaps he was of some small use after all.

"When we settled here many moons ago, the First Order were merely a speck in space. Bakura belonged to Master Vynea, and this Temple was made with our own hands."

She took to her knees, and allowed the Force to flow around them. No contention, just unison.

"This is not our home, see it as a fragment of our past, Mister Harrison. A place to make pilgrimage to if you're in need of focus. Little more. Understanding your roots, I thought you might appreciate the location. Where better to help show you balance, than at its epicenter?"

A light frown made itself known to her. She could feel his concerns, his discomfort, but also those of another. Had something happened? Sargon's presence lifted into the air, and she knew that all would be under control. No need for the Hex child to interfere. So her focus returned once again to the man before them.

"I know some, others I will come to know in time. Most are set on their Path, Journeyers of the Je'daii Way. Others have already solidified their place as Rangers, some even Masters. While we have remained disorganized for a long time, Mister Harrison, the Je'daii have still been set in their way, as you so kindly put it. Our Journey never truly ends."

Though to look upon Master Aotirr, Asha worried that her time was actually wearing thin.

"Forget, for a moment, what it is you think you know. About the Universe, the Galaxy, the Force. Clear your mind, Connor, and allow the Bendu to wash over you here. Remove yourself from the conflicts you have been forced to believe in, forget the ruminations of Ashla and Bogan. I don't ask you to forsake your ideals, but for a time... Open yourself to the possibilities at hand here today."

[member="Connor Harrison"] [member="Sargon Vynea"] [member="Sobaan Palle"]

Stephanie found her surprisingly fast; perhaps her emotive abilities were enhancing, or maybe she had known what to look for in her friend. Regardless, she was by Kyra's side in what felt like a heartbeat, grasping at her hands, an act which helped to soothe her spirits more than the woman would know.

Trying her best not to make a scene, she took a few steps back and inhaled a breath. A soothing sensation washed over her, though its source was not Steph, and she said a silent thank you to whomever it had come from. Clarity was returning to her now.

It seemed her friend understood the need for privacy, and she found herself led to the other side of the ship away from the others.

"I'm okay" she whispered, "I think. I... I think he's here..."

No, she was certain. She could feel him, even with the darkness that seeped around him she knew it was him.

"I didn't know I'd have to face him so soon, Steph... I was warned not to rush headlong into it. Coming here was a mistake."

But she couldn't simply back away, or a scene would most definitely be started.

[member="Sargon Vynea"] [member="Sobaan Palle"] [member="Stephanie Swail"] [member="Connor Harrison"]

"Gather around, students, gather around."

As she ascended the stairs once more, the calm voice of Master Aotirr made itself known to her. The Miraluka was stood a little bit away from the Temple itself, where Asha was knelt talking to the man she decided had to be the stranger. The few younglings present all moved to her, and a few of the older students too; Jyn noticed young [member="Sobaan Palle"] and smiled encouragingly, moving to his side.

"Quite the catch young one" she whispered, so as not to talk over the Je'daii Master.

"Welcome to Akar Kesh, a structure of our own devising. Can any among us inform me what the focus of Akar Kesh is?"

Jyn knelt in the grass, and patted the ground beside her for the young Palle to join if he wished. She set down the refreshments, which some of the students took up as they too sat to listen to the sickly Miraluka.

He gulped as his eyes remained on [member="Connor Harrison"]. Something about him irked the young Palle. Only when [member="Jyn Sol"] came over to him did he snap out of his dreadful state. Orange eyes turned up to her and then back to the rat that was still squirming in his hands. He held it up for her to see, proud of his catch! But he didn't say anything because the elder lady was talking and his momma had taught him not to be rude. When Jyn sat and motioned for him to sit next to her, he did so, flopping down and leaning up against her as he continued to hold onto the rat. No way was he going to let go of his prized capture that easy. In all honesty, he would likely let the rat go eventually.

The blind lady, at least he assumed she was blind since her eyes were covered, was talking about the temple that they had come to. He'd known they were going to a temple, of course, but that didn't mean he actually knew anything about the place. To be totally honest, he didn't really know much about the place they'd come from. His eyes did, however, settle on the snacks Jyn had, and so he set the rat down a bit reluctantly before reaching for some crackers.

"Thanks," he whispered to her as he started nomming one.

With daggers, Stephanie glared around with her arms around [member="Kyra Sol"] towards where this man - this monster - was. She looked around...face to face...and then seeing a tall man who stuck out made her face drop as [member="Asha Hex"] spoke to him. He wore black, crimson and looked like he had been in battle.

She stroked her friends' arm, and turned into her.

"You don't know that. Come on...let's go...let's go to your sister. It's alright. I'm here."

The girl moved Kyra away into the crowds, glancing over to the man as the walked to mark his patch. Hopefully he wouldn't come to her attention, nor her to his. Maybe if she pretended he wasn't her, she would forget.

"Come, sit here with me. Let's listen to her."

Stephanie saw [member="Sobaan Palle"] in the group, and led Kyra to him. Keeping this monster away from them was her top priority now.

Connor swallowed his pride, nodded and held his hands behind his back as he leant on a large rock wall besides [member="Asha Hex"] who was making more sense than he wanted.

"I will try. I promise. I could..."

He turned his head and looked through the crowd.

He was being watched - that feeling you had. Well, he had it. The Force auras here were strong, and almost identical. Some strong, some weak, some fearful, some confident.

"Sorry," he muttered.

Connor locked eyes with one - [member="Sobaan Palle"] - and saw that the young boy didn't trust him. Connor frowned. There was something odd about that boy. The face. The look he gave.

Sweeping across with his eyes, he let himself try to find the source of the one watching him. Someone wasn't happy.

[member="Kyra Sol"] | [member="Jyn Sol"]

Connor seemed distracted.

Was it something to do with the tension she was feeling? A slight frown pulled at her lips, and she slowly raised back up from the ground, peering through the crowd of people. Most had gathered around the great Force Master, though one set of eyes were thrown their way. Kyra's friend, the woman known as Steph, was glaring daggers at Connor.

Perhaps he is not so unknown to these people after all...

"Focus, please, Mister Harrison."

She would do what she could to keep tensions to a minimum, at least until she could figure out what they were being caused by.

"The words of Master Aotirr do not concern you right this moment. They are aimed at the children."

She set her hands to her back, clasping them there, and began to dutifully pace around the bounds of this open aired temple.

"There is no ignorance, there is knowledge; There is no fear, there is power; I am the heart of the Force; I am the revealing fire of light; I am the mystery of darkness; In balance with chaos and harmony; Immortal in the Force."

She let her own words linger for a moment, regarding Connor with an almost expressionless face.

"This is the Code of our people. It existed long before the Jedi and Sith codes you know today, though within it you will find pieces of each. With the schisms came a butchering of our lessons, they took the pieces that fit their agenda... And dubbed the rest heresy."

No bitterness in her tone, simply an informative voice. She did not care that things had gone they way they had, it was inevitable in many ways. Clinging onto the past was foolish.

[member="Connor Harrison"]

Her gaze lifted slightly at the approach of her sister and her friend, noticing the swirl of emotions surrounding them immediately. It pained the Empath to experience them, her skin prickled... And she set their heightened feelings aside so as not to combust around the children.

"Is everything okay?" She whispered, so as not to disturb the Master, noting from the corner of her eye that the young Palle chose to release the rodent in favour of snacks. A wise choice in her mind. She reached out to fuss the top of his head, concern plastering her expression regarding the tension.

"Yes, that is correct." Chimed Aotirr, "This is indeed the Temple of Balance, where the Force swirls in unison. It was the final Tho Yor to land upon the World of Tython, a planet which was physically effected by the throws of light and dark. It was documented that severe Force Storms wrecked the world at any slight deviation from balance, and as a result Je'daii who strayed too close to Ashla or Bogan were sent to the moons of Tython, known by the same names, to meditate and attune themselves to the Bendu, for the sake of the world's preservation."

Several hands shot into the air at that, younglings with wide eyes longing to hear more. Jyn had heard this before, though it was comforting to hear it affirmed, but she was... Distracted. She looked down, making sure that Sobaan at least was paying attention to all that was being said.

[member="Connor Harrison"] [member="Stephanie Swail"] [member="Sobaan Palle"] [member="Sargon Vynea"]

Kyra was led through the crowd of people to where Jyn lingered with the young child, and there she and Steph sat within the grass. Stephanie seemed to be livid, and while she was grateful for that fact she knew that it wasn't completely necessary. Connor hadn't actually hurt her in any way, the memories were painful because it was all she had left. She did not believe he posed any harm to the group, not least because young Asha seemed to be talking his ear off. No, she was just upset for herself. For what had been lost.

And concerned that he might see her here.

Was she ready to face him?

You have come a long way, Kyra, since Jakku. Since Mirial. Since Sarkany. Heck, even since Voss... You are stronger than you were when you faced Aela and asked for guidance. You have the presence of family, of friends, of this Order... If ever there was a time that you could face him, it is now.

But they were not here for her drama; they were here for this Temple, to step through the throws of the past...

Perhaps this is what I need, though, perhaps this will bring me my own balance...

Without warning Kyra rose. She shook her head at any attempts to stop her, and managed a small smile to Steph.

"I'll be fine. Wait for me here, and if you think I need you... You can come. I'm not angry with him, Steph, so you don't need to be either..."

Whispers out of the way, she turned and made her way toward the stone circle. Asha had reclaimed his attention, and while she did not wish to disrupt their conversation... She knew that she had to get this out of the way.

So she lingered on the edge, allowing her presence to flow around the Circle. The young redhead saw her, it looked as though she sensed what was going to happen, as if she had already known before Kyra did. But she said nothing, she did nothing. She simply stood there, as Kyra was doing.
