Private The Midnight [Valery]

Xarielle Pavanos

"Not to discount the many Sith who go into the temples and are called by it, but..." there was a small shrug, "they must have been vulnerable already."
Jedi Master Valery moved through the Force, and as the massive door began to rise. Xarielle took a few steps back, as the light flooded the ground she stood on. Her eyes went wide as the light seemed to dance there in the cave, she swallowed hard as she heard a voice. Calling to her, and as she took a step forward she saw the face to the voice. "Grampa?"
"Rielle, my dearest. I am so pleased to see you, come," he held out his hand and on instinct she took it, not realizing that perhaps the Jedi Master would not be able to see it. Although, the old and gone Jedi Master Gideon Voldaren gave Valery Noble a small wink. "Walk with me, Rielle." He instructed his granddaughter. At that moment, Xarielle nearly forgot the Jedi Master was there as she came to walk side by side with the dead.

Meanwhile, Valery would have a visitor herself. Mishel approached her and took a deep breath, she exhaled hard and looked at the pair in front of them. "Force, it's been over twenty years..." her voice trailed off, "I remember when her mom was pulling my ass out of the line of fire on Bespin while we fought the Galactic Alliance's Jedi as the Knights of Ren." Mishel sighed and shook her head, "where does the time go, I wonder."
Then without hesitation, she turned to Master Noble. "My apologies, where are my manners," her raspy voice went up an octave as she smiled, "names Mishel, and that... well, that is perhaps one of the most precious things I've ever had the pleasure of meeting."
"So it goes without saying that while I'm not saying you have to train her. I am saying... just make sure, she doesn't meet her end before her time." Mishel turned her attention away from Valery and out toward Xarielle who was talking with her grandfather. "I'll be here to help when I can and... when I'm ready I'll return to this world. May the Force be with you, Master Noble."
Xarielle all the while watched as her grandfather spoke of his past, "and I learned that the path of the light, while not for everyone, and while it has its challenges. I found, to be very, very rewarding and if you so choose my dear. I shall be with you every step of the way."
"Listen... I, I don't... I'm just a kid from Balmorra. My ship just needs to be fixed, I'm not meant to... for-"
Gideon smiled and sighed happily taking a seat beside a few crystals. "I thought the same thing when I was younger, just a kid from Kro Var. What can I do?" He summoned a small pebble from the ground to his hand, "so I ask you, Rielle. Do you think the stone that sits on the very top of the mountain's mighty face, does it think it's more important than the stones that formed the base?"
She blinked, uncertain on how to answer the question.
In an instant, the pebble was gone and Gideon rose to his feet, "a single thread in the tapestry, though it color brightly shines, can never see its purpose in the grand design." Xarielle's brows furrowed as she followed him questioning him, "how can you see what you are worth, or where your value lies, when you see yourself through the eyes of man?"
"You cannot, and thus you must look at yourself, look at your life through the eyes of the Force."
Xarielle scoffed, "okay, listen I get you want me to look at it differently, but honestly I'm just here to catalog some history in my journey."
"Ah and what's a journey without a destination, mhmm? Oh Rielle, my girl, need I tell you the story of the lost sheep?"
"No grandpa, I know, the shepherd boy was greater than the richest king, and if a man lost everything he owned then has he truly lost his worth or is it the beginning of a new brighter, and birth. You cannot measure the worth of a man in wealth, strength or size, not in what he has gained or lost but the answer lies in those who try to look at their life... through the eyes of the Force," she cringed realizing she just rounded back to his point. Xarielle wasn't so sure about any of this, "I just..."
"Rielle, you must try, and must try to dance, I will be with you and you will have help every step of the way. Remember, I am always with you, always have been and always will be. Remember my lessons and remember me, may the Force be with you."
"NO WAIT!" She shouted grasping at the air for where he stood, now stood nothing at all. Xarielle's eyes were filled with tears and her ears felt warm, and it was only then she realized how cold it was in the cave. Even so, she closed her eyes and slowly sank to her knees. Her grandfather was there, she knew it, even if he was a ghost and even if she was the only one who could see him. He had been there and as she put her hands to her eyes. Xarielle moved to wipe the tears from her vision. When she opened her eyes, there before her laid the crystal that seemed to shine brighter than any other.
Holding out her hand, the crystal flowed to her effortlessly.

Valery stood with her hands clasped in front of her lap when Xarielle made her way into the crystal caves. Typically, the caves would not reveal their challenge for a Jedi to outsiders, but as the young woman entered, something rather special happened. Through the Force, Valery could feel a presence of some kind manifesting itself, but one without a physical form attached to this world.
It was a Force ghost, a spirit of a Jedi long gone that came to guide a new student of the Force through the caves. Whether Xarielle was to become a Jedi or not didn't matter — she was here because the Force guided her.
With a nod of her head and the corner of her lips curled up into a smile, Valery acknowledged the man as he winked in her direction, but her gaze was quickly drawn as another presence appeared beside her. The woman introduced herself as Mishel, and Valery instantly recognized her. She had been there on Ossus to help investigate the ship with a dark presence on board.
It felt good to see a familiar face, even though she wasn't here physically anymore.
"I watch over all Jedi, young and old," Valery said with a soft smile, her caring side showing a little. "You have my word that I'll keep an eye on her, and I will do whatever I can to keep her from being harmed." She then looked back into the caves and focused on Xarielle's presence for just a moment. She never made a promise lightly but she always honored them, so Xarielle was always going to be able to count on Valery for help.
"I look forward to your return. Force guide you as well, Mishel." she dipped her head and waited in silence again after the woman faded back into the Force. Eventually, Xari would make her way back out of the caves but with a crystal in her hand, and emotions flowing through the Force.
Valery simply greeted her with a comforting smile and held up a hand so the wall of ice could begin to form again.
"How was it?" she finally asked.

Xarielle was honestly still in a bit of a daze when Valery asked her 'how was it.' She jumped back slightly, if only because she was startled - having forgotten that Valery was still there. "Oh, uh," she stammered and then looked down at the lightsaber crystal in her hand. Xarielle looked over her shoulder and then returned her attention to the Jedi Master. "Well," she continued on, "could have warned me that I was going to be hit in the feelings."
The Balmorran took in a deep breath and exhaled, "uh, it was uh - it was... well I am truly just whelmed." With emotions and thoughts and what did any of this mean? "I uh, I don't know really know I mean I know it's a lightsaber crystal and I know it's blue... which I- I know it was or is the traditional crystal of a Jedi Guardian but I don't know what any of this means or what just happened in there."
She stepped out of the caves still holding onto the crystal as she motioned with her hands. "My grandfather, Gideon Voldaren has been dead, dead as a doornail swimming in lava. For years, years, and he just ... he... He was apparently a Jedi? I-" She exhaled her cheeks puffed as she did so, and the motion of her hands around her head indicated that her mind had been blown.

Valery remained quiet when Xarielle stepped out of the caves, and gave her the time to get anything off her chest. She had warned the young woman about the caves being challenging, but it wasn't until one actually went inside, that they realized what it meant. The crystal caves could show a great many things, but they always seemed to confront people with something truly unexpected.
"Apparently so." Valery said in response to her question about her grandfather being a Jedi. For a moment, she wondered if she should mention Mishel as well, but she decided against it for now.
"The caves often confront people with their paths, their fears, their daily struggles — it's often emotional and sometimes it can be hard to understand why you saw what you did. It could be a sign for your future, it could simply be that your grandfather was able to manifest here and wanted to offer some guidance."
"It's up to you to interpret it, but it can take time." Valery said with a hopefully comforting smile.
"As for the color of the crystal, it can mean a lot of things. Blue is a color often associated with the Jedi Guardians, but the cystals on Ilum tend to gain their color from the nature of their bonded owner. So it may very well say something about you as a person as well."

Xarielle looked again at the crystal in her hand, slowly she closed her fingers over it forming a fist. Her head raised and eyes looked away from the Jedi Master and she glanced back, over her shoulder toward the caves. She had no idea what this meant and if it meant she should become a Jedi or what that path even had in store for her should she pursue it. Xarielle returned her attention to Master Noble, soft brown eyes settled on the woman before her as she spoke.
"Yeah... Maybe," she agreed still somewhat taken aback by her experience, "maybe." She repeated but this time she gripped the crystal in her hand and thought about what he said. I will be with you. She recalled her own mother's lessons, no one's truly gone imanha. Although we may no longer be able to hold them, they are still with us. Right here. Her other pointed to her heart and unconsciously Xarielle placed her empty hand over her heart. "The Force lives through all things, and through the Force even those who are gone still live on."
She looked back down at the crystal, fingers unfolded and there the blue crystal glowed - hummed almost.
"I- uh..." Xarielle's voice seemed to leave her again, "still not sure what any of this means, but I am curious to find out." Confidence returned to her voice as she seemed to settle on the idea. "But I don't have a lightsaber, my... sister took mom's old sabers. I only got ma's ol' blaster."

"It took me a long time to figure it all out," Valery said with a hopefully reassuring smile.
"Whether you become a Jedi or not, challenges like this will always find their way to you. The crystal gathering is a very traditional one for the Jedi, but the Force will test you far more than this," she said with a nod. "But for now, you've done really well and earned your crystal."
Valery then briefly shifted her gaze to the caves, where the door of ice had already formed to block most of the entryway. Nobody would be going inside until the next gathering.
"As for the lightsaber, perhaps I can help you." She gestured for Xarielle to follow her back towards the main temple hall. "Using the lightsaber of your mother or someone close to you can be a nice gesture, but ideally you have something made to fit you specifically."
"Back in the past for me, the Jedi Artisans would often craft custom hilts, and for a while, I joined them to learn more about the lightsaber and how they could be built." She looked at Xarielle again, but this time with a slight smirk. "If you're in need of one, I can build you a lightsaber."

Xarielle exhaled and shifted her weight from one leg to the other and back again. It helped to be reassured that this wasn't something she was supposed to figure out right away. The fact that even a Jedi Master admitted to it taking a long time brought a small manner of comfort to her. There will always be challenges she supposed, a small nod of acknowledgment as Master Noble mentioned it. Xarielle examined the crystal again as Noble spoke of Jedi Artisans and the just the name alone was enough to make her smile. "That just sounds lovely, and it reminds me of a friend of my family."
"My mother, when she was a Knight of Ren became friends with her fellow Ren, Mishel. She then later became a Jedi and was something of a Jedi Artisan I suppose. She crafted lightsabers, and was an artificer in her own right who made her own unique lightsaber crystals." She couldn't help but smile thinking about it and what that must be like. Xarielle looked up to see the Jedi Master's face and arched a brow trying to connect the dots about 'back in the past' she narrowed her gaze slightly as she continued to think. Unfortunately, the dots weren't connecting for Rielle and she gave up on it entirely.

She did want to try her hand at building her own lightsaber. It was part of a Jedi's training at least historically speaking. "I think that is a wonderful offer, however; if... and I do mean if this Jedi thing is something that I'm going to pursue then I think I should be the one to build it." A slight pause as she tipped the crystal between her hands. "It is from what I can recall of older Jedi traditions part of the training as the lightsabers were and would be unique to that Jedi."

At the mention of Mishel, Valery began to smile and nodded, "I've actually gotten to meet Mishel as well, on a mission back on Ossus some time ago. I didn't know about her work as an artisan, but I hold a lot of respect for her." Perhaps one day, she could talk to Mishel again about a little project she has in mind. Valery has been wanting to build a new double-bladed lightsaber for quite some time now, and Mishel was likely a far better artisan.
"As for building your lightsaber, it's a tradition that Padawans assemble their first lightsaber themselves. Typically with standard components and they tend to be more simplistic. You certainly don't have to create the hilt entirely from scratch — that's something I could do for you." she explained.
"Then through moving meditation, you assemble the lightsaber using the various components and your crystal. If you'd like to give the Jedi path a try, then I can help you with this."

Xarielle looked at the crystal again and took a step back, left shoulder to Master Noble and right toward the cave door. It would be that very moment that defined her for the rest of her life, it hadn't been the numerous trips into the Sith Temples where it all felt dead. There was never a reaction to it, never a reason to feel it - not in the way that she felt the Force here on Ilum. Things had changed from the ancient texts that described what the Jedi once did and didn't do. They had changed from when her grandfather and mother had been part of the order as well. Her family had been gifted with the Force for ages and as she studied the door.
The girl from Balmorra pivoted her feet, back toward the cave door, and standing in front of Master Noble she took a deep breath and exhaled. She could hear her grandfather's voice whispering to trust in the Force, trust in the training she had received up to that point. What did her heart say? What did the Force whisper to her? "I've come this far..." Her voice trailed off as she exhaled again, "might as well go all the way. The uh, first step of a thousand-mile journey or something like that, right?"
A half-cocked smile as she maneuvered the crystal with the Force. The bright blue glow seemed to radiate with acceptance, "does this mean I have to trade out the jackets for the standard uniform of the burlap brigade?"

Valery smiled warmly and placed a hand on Xarielle's shoulder, "I think a thousand miles would be an understatement..." she joked with a smirk, "But this is quite the first step you've made, and I'm sure one your family would be quite proud of." Her eyes drifted off in the direction of the caves for a moment.
"That said, it's going to be a difficult journey as well. It's something many underestimate in their excitement, but Jedi go through incredibly difficult things, especially in this time of war. Myself and others will do what we can to prepare you and help you along, but you have to give it your all." It was both a warning and a bit of encouragement. Valery had seen Padawans fall, she had lost one of her own Padawans and the last thing she wanted was for something like that to repeat.
"As for clothing, there is no uniform you have to wear. I do suggest getting a jacket without Imperial or Sith insignia on it though." She flashed a smirk.
"But come, I think it's first time for you to retrieve your ship. I'll share some coordinates of Temples and other Jedi facilities with you, and you can progress your training wherever classes are offered. Of course, you're free to seek out more personal training as well."
With that, Valery turned around and guided the woman back the way they came.
