Public The Private Booth [Gambling Thread - Klondike]

Gluk, Stock, and Two Smoking Lasers
"Nah, nah, I just mean pairs are nothing special. Raw count like the man said."

The drink having warmed the whole right side of his neck, Jerec switched hands and sloshed some cheap lum into his left neckgill. He nodded amiably at Cord### Cord### , who had kind of a spicy Force thing going on — darker than Jerec, maybe about the same amount of oomph involved. "Welcome aboard, friend."

The dealer for the gambling seemed willing to cut back on the house rules, and was open to keeping it simple and straightforward. That was the best, Candu Tabuu enjoyed when things were just as they were meant to be. Just right. Still, there was a little confusion, but thankfully the Ithorian cleared it up right quick:

"Yeah-yeeeah!" Candu Tabuu nodded enthusiastically at the tall, long-necked alien. "Pairs nothing. Just dice numbers. Total-totals! And side action? Okay-okay. We do!"

The Anzellan looked down to the credit scanner on the table and realized he had to hand over creds. With some effort, the small alien pulled out a large - perhaps comically so - credstick from a back pocket. It was almost the length of his whole forearm. With a swipe, Candu Tabuu scanned and announced:

"Candu Tabuu, jes jes, one thousand credits!" And with a big grin and squeaky chuckle, paid over. "Las Uhl kretiho pluvo fal! Credit rain for Candu Tabuu!"

It was time to make some credits!

Cord returned Argos of the East's nod and Jerec Asyr Jerec Asyr 's greeting with a tip of his hat.

"I was told to always be suspicious of folks calling me friend and rolling dice." Cord said with a friendly chuckle to his voice. "But I'm sure nothin bad ever happened here." He finished, again in a friendly tone. As the tiny one made his claims and bets a Nautolan server put down a glass of ice in front of Cord and poured him the house whiskey. Cord nodded his head and tipped his head in thanks.

He hadn't caught the initial game or side action, but Candu Tabuu had clued cord into the rules. Simple dice totals hunh? Seemed as good a play as any.

"Whoever told you that was smart.", Argos laughed in response to Cord### Cord### - not maliciously, but in agreement.
"Lets get these dice on the table then, shall we?"
For his own roll, he set the dice up and threw them down.
6, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Not his best roll - totalling 16.
"Shame.", he said with a heavy sigh before grabbing more dice and throwing the others.

First, was Jerec Asyr Jerec Asyr -
5, 3, 3, 1, and 1. 13 total. In their old game, it was a winning hand - but for the new one, it seemed he'd lost his bet. Argos couldn't help smiling, but hid it as he moved on to the last throw.
Candu Tabuu 's dice flew onto the table and took a hesitant second to find their place. When they were still, everyone could see what he rolled;

6, 5, 5, 2, and 1. 19. He'd easily beaten Argo's own roll.
Argos, let out a whistle, leaned back, and shook his head.
"I thought the House was always supposed to win? Damn shame my luck is what it is.", he laughed.
"Enjoy your creds, Spacer."

Jerec grimaced. That was five hundred gone. The existential emptiness of gambling threatened to overwhelm him.

Just for a moment. Just until he sloshed more lum in his neckgills and realized he'd won the small side action.

"A hundred from each of ya, my lucky night." He put down four hundred. "Put it against my next wager, call this five hundred."

The latest sentient to join the gambling table mentioned something about being suspicious of people calling themselves friends rolling dice, to which the Anzellan nodded avidly, before he muttered. "Yeah-yeah, friend should no want for you lose, hah. Falsa dul'skal, fake friend." Before he watched the dealer roll the dice.

Oh?

A mid-range result for the house. Another roll...

Oh!

A low-mid result for the Ithorian. And finally Candu Tabuu's roll...

OH!

Candu Tabuu cheered - "Hej, hej, gaini pluvo kretiho! Raining Candu Tabuu credits!" - as he bounced up and down beside the credstick scanner, on the edge of the table. The small alien went bug-eyed for a second, as he almost toppled off the edge, but managed to catch himself with a quick shake of his arms forward.

"Candu Tabuu pay, hej-hej," The Anzellan said as the Ithorian pointed out it had won, so the engineer reluctantly paid his side hustle. That side bet didn't seem great, Candu Tabuu had to admit, but if that was the game... well. Besides, considering the start of a sure-to-be amazing winning streak for Candu Tabuu, he was feeling mighty good. "Ni iri ree sam relul, go again same-same rules! Side bet Candu Tabuu low, win! Ithorian high, win! Yes?"

Candu Tabuu held the credstick in both hands, as he waited for confirmation.

"Unu kil kretiho, one thousand again-again!"

"I'll match our enthusiastic friend here." Cord said, putting in a thousand Uck and taking a sip of his whiskey. "And propose some side action. Hundred Uck each in a separate pot. Goes too . ." Cord pondered a second. "Most ones. No pot for ties, everyone gets their Uck back "

It was admittedly a hedge he'd played in past. Kept the bottom luck from losing everything. Didn't stop anybody from halfway winning in the middle though. Always more than one way to an empty pocket.

Candu Tabuu looked to the newest gambler, and raised hairy eyebrows as he regarded the sentient with half-closed eyes. So the side action would change again? It was starting to get hard keeping track of the changes, but at least the main game had been simplified. But, far be it for the Anzellan to put a stop to someone getting credits, even if they lost with the most ones - which wouldn't be Candu Tabuu, of course, he was too lucky!

"Jes, jes, okay-okay, new side bet most ones, win-win. Okay-hah!"

After a few seconds of thought, Candu Tabuu was fine with that. Gambler with the most ones would win the side bet. No problem, since he was going to win big again anyway!

"Other happy? Ithorian?"

A firm hand closed around Jerec Asyr's shoulder and pulled him to his feet. Tarsin looked the Ithorian square in the face.

"I think you've lost quite enough of my money for one night, Captain Asyr. Walk away."

Jerec tried for words but couldn't find them. Tarsin restrained a sharp-edged smile until Jerec turned and stumbled off. Then Tarsin took Jerec's seat.

"Apologies for the interruption, gentlemen," he said. "Let me see if I understand the game at hand. Five six-sided dice, highest net score prevails. Captain Asyr was in for five hundred on this round, and I'll be assuming his financial position."

From just outside the cantina came the noise of three Trandoshans beating up Jerec. Tarsin ignored it.

"As for the side bet," he said to Candu Tabuu and Cord### Cord### , "yes: five hundred to whichever of the three of us has the most ones on the next round."

Cord stifled . . . well, it wasn't a laugh, but he stifled something at the dramatic appearance of Tarsin Kenn

"Assuming his fi-nan-cial position?" Cord let a grin slip into his face. He didn't acknowledge the sounds coming the Ithorian outside. Cord didn't really know the guy.

"In places like this people don't talk like you do." Cord said, a hint of accusation crept into Cord's otherwise jovial tone his mouth. "Unless they got work." The words hit with a tone of seriousness that hadn't yet exited the spacer's mouth. Cord took out an electronic card and flipped it toward the Munn.

"Let me know when."

In exactly the right sort of faith, Argos also ignored Jerec being beaten up - it's the way these gambling halls tended to go on Nar Shaddaa, afterall. Instead, he simply shrugged, let the new man take on Jerec's bet, and began to shake the dice in a closed hand.
"Whatever you say.", he chimed in before throwing his own dice on the table first.

4, 4, 3, 2, and 2. 15 total - didn't make for a good hand, for either the main bet, nor the side. He grimaced, then moved onto the next roll.
Candu Tabuu 's roll fell on the table in short order;
6, 4, 3, 1, and a 1. 15. Argos scratched at his cheek at the proximity of his win - but house did win on ties. He whistled low, then moved on.
Cord### Cord### 's roll was quick, just as the last;
4, 3, 3, 2, and 1. 12 - a losing hand roll for both the main and side.
And finally, the last man was up - the newly arrived Tarsin Kenn . Argos let the dice slip from his hand and land with their iconic marble on felt sound;
6, 4, 3, 3, and 1. 17 beats the house, but it lost the side bet. Argos whistled low - appreciating he only had to pay out a small amount of credits this time. A stack of 500 creds was placed before the man. Then, another 100 for Candu Tabuu on the side pot.

"Pay up boys, our spacer buddy here won-won.", he repeated in the same accent the alien had.

Tarsin shunted the five hundred — his winnings — over to Candu Tabuu in fulfillment of the side bet. He made Cord### Cord### 's card disappear with a nod and placed his hands flat on the table.

"I believe that clears up all outstanding business so far as this room is concerned."

He stood to his full height, a lanky six-foot-four.

"Evening, gentlemen. Enjoy your time on Nar Shaddaa."

Candu Tabuu didn't win that one, but he also had the credits from the win pushed his way... so maybe he did? The Anzellan wasn't about to argue with anyone giving him credits, so he grinned and nodded stupidly as the tall - much meaner, but infinitely cooler - alien stood and excused himself from the table. There was a small concern for the Ithorian, who up until then had been seen to by thug types, but Candu Tabuu wasn't the type to worry about friendly strangers.

Besides, he had more gambling to do!

"Hey-hey, before go, here!" Candu Tabuu raced over and tugged on the tall alien's sleeve, as he turned to leave. "Take-take. Good for you, yesyes?"

Slipped into the obscenely larger hand of the other alien was a small commpad that was single use. Once the user checked it, the information was wiped, for good. And as for that commpad, well, it contained the contact information for Nebula of the Crimson Dawn...

"Remember good. One look. Bye-bye, jesjes."

After a few seconds of thought, Candu Tabuu went back to his spot and looked to the other sentient that was gambling:

"Again? Same-same, all? Candu in five hundred!"

Cord tipped his hat at Tarsin Kenn as he left, but didn't make any effort to keep him in. He'd left his card. He'd get a call when the time came. Or the card would be trashed in a pile of other hopefuls. No way to tell with a Munn.

"I'm good to keep going. 500 in hunh? I'll raise to 750." Cord tempted Argos of the East and Candu Tabuu. He had to win eventually right? No wait, that was a fallacy. Or was it? Cord couldn't remember.

Candu Tabuu was a betting Anzellan. He loved to gamble, to win credits, and make more and more credits. But he also had learned to keep a careful eye on his hand, and where his funds were... yet, sadly, that lesson had come a lot later in life, after he had accrued a large debt. Still, the newcomer seemed insistent on upping the ante, though Candu Tabuu was content to stay his amount for side action.

"Candu Tabuu stay five hundred, side bet!" The small alien shook his head, he wouldn't go higher. "Quo-quo, nono, not higher for Candu Tabuu... if higher by house, no side bet for Candu Tabuu."

The Anzellan didn't want to up to 750. Rather, he couldn't, since he didn't want to bottom out available funds when his winning streak was right around the corner...

HOLOCOMMUNICATION

aktur_banner.png

As Candu Tabuu waited for the confirmation, the small alien's comm began to beep. Given the contact frequency on it, there was little reason to expect he wouldn't answer:

>> HOLO.ENCRYPT//113M-ejj--; data=ghosted; data-uplink=secure; masking-status=active; function=security; permissions=limited;]

"Candu Tabuu, this is Nebula.

My financial advisors have informed me that your credit limit is currently fluctuating. I do hope you are not gambling, while on official business to secure the manufacturing supplies we require? That would be most unfortunate...

Rectify your affairs, now, and get back to business."

The face on the holocall was distorted, removed to the extent to be unrecognizable, and the voice utilized a multi-phase voice changer to hide the speaker. And once the words were spoken, the call cut off, leaving the small alien to think about his next actions...

Argos shrugged and simply accepted what they put down. Candu Tabuu put his money down first, but Cord### Cord### seemed more interested in talking about raising the bets. He leaned forward and spoke over his glasses;
"You're playing against the house right now, friend. What you raise is on you - not the alien.", he said quietly.
Leaning back and correcting his glasses, he spoke again;
"Now c'mon, put your creds on the table. Don't hold the game up."

With the creds laid bare, Argos smiled once more. A sip of his drink, a shake of the dice, and the horses were off. Dice clattered on the table once more, and before them was Argo's own roll;
6, 3, 2, 1, and 1. With a total of unlucky 13, Argos couldn't help but be a bit annoyed. Where was all the house luck he needed?
Ignoring it, he moved on to Candu Tabuu 's roll.
5, 4, 1, 1, and 1. Oddly, it seemed the House's luck was right there; just another loss for the spacer. Argos beamed for a moment, wiped his nose with a thumb, and moved on to the last.
Cord### Cord### 's roll hit the table like - well, a bunch of dice. They found their place still, and the results were clear to everyone;
6, 5, 3, 3, and 3. It seemed the cowboy had a bit more luck than what he oughta.
Argos twisted his lips as he tossed the man his creds.
"Winner winner, chicken dinner. Spend it wisely, spacer."

Candu Tabuu grimaced at the holocall. He knew that his boss was watching him now, and that defying the order was a quick way to severe repercussions. So, that meant the Anzellan would need to conclude his business, otherwise he ran the risk of punishment. And, unfortunately, it didn't seem that Candu Tabuu would end his small gambling spree on a strong note - as he came in dead last - but there was a silver lining...

"Candu Tabuu finished now, jes-jes," He said as he began to prepare to leave the table. "Candu Tabuu won-won side bet, yes? Most ones? Both owe credits to me?"

The Anzellan waited long enough to be given the side bet owed, then excused himself. He waved to the dealer, as he climbed down off the tabletop, and started the gauntlet of running under the feet of massive sentients and aliens throughout the Lucky Lady...
