"Ah yes, a Jedi's weapon."

Intent: To create a retrosaber in a similar manner, but different fashion to Jaxton Ravos'.
Development Thread:

Suffered a defeat at the hands of Matsu Xiangu. Impaled through the stomach.
His armor had been meant to afford protection against energy weapons, not edged blades, and the wicked points of the harpy tore through the outer synth mesh, through the spun-plast backing, through the armor weave underlay, and into his gut. Sudden, sharp searing agony curdled his blood and set his nerves aflame. Korr screamed as the vile blades pierced intestines and set blood spilling into his tight body glove

Manufacturer: Ryan Korr
Model: The Sentinel
Affiliation: Jedi Master Korr

Description:
With the advent of the holonet, word travels fast through the galaxy. Word of a lightsaber that could rip through beskar even more so. Korr, hearing of the exploits of recent acquaintance [member="Jaxton Ravos"], sought to mimic the Grey Jedi's feat. Rather than fixating on a protosaber design that would render Korr's favored Ataru acrobatics untenable, the Jedi Master settled for a design that had found little renown over history. With guard shotos, double-bladed staves and dual-phase sabers proliferating the galaxy, there seemed to be little use for a long-handled saber aside from aesthetic reasons or merely wielder's preference. Not a popular weapon by any means, and for good reason. The long handle was too short for the weapon to be a light pike and too long to move through most of the traditional kata, but Korr thought he saw potential in such a seemingly useless trait.

After the battle on Telti, which had seen him eating through a tube for weeks, Ryan Korr realized that the galaxy had entered a new era. The opponents he faced were almost always equipped with armor that could not be pierced by a lightsaber, whether they wore armor crafted from ancient ores extracted from the earth, or synthetic materials. The Vonduun Kerr Skyrric, which every Yuuzhan Vong warrior seemed to wear, was especially frustrating. Like it or not, the galaxy was in an arms race against the Jedi. He needed a new blade to match this new era.

Rather than using the lengthened handle to give the weapon double blades or a dual phase, Korr put in four times as many diatium power cells, added another adegan crystal and refined the focusing lens; all to give the blade a more powerful cutting edge. He also removed the dimetrius circuits from the activating loop, thereby allowing the weapon to withstand contact with cortosis. Advances in technology over the last hundred years enabled the power cells to provide the lightsaber with far more energy than could have been managed previously. On full power, Korr's long-handled lightsaber can shear through mandalorian iron and rend cortosis. Phrik, crab armor, and maalraas bones also present little problem before the blade's edge. The surface of ultrachrome will melt as the conductive capabilities are overwhelmed. Its cutting ability is finite, however, and the weapon cannot rip through extraordinarily thick armor, such as that used on beskar tanks or very large non-human warriors.

Yet, although the blade appears to afford Korr a great many advantages, he also puts himself at risk with its use. The hilt is fashioned from cortosis and durasteel, not as durable as beskar but capable of withstanding a blow from a lightsaber. Unlike Ravos' blade, Ryan's weapon is not able to activate underwater. Also unlike Ravos' blade, Korr's has no massive power source. This enables him to perform his acrobatics, but at the cost of battery life. When cutting at full strength, the blade drains an inordinate amount of energy from the power cells. Should the blade only graze beskar, then little energy would be expended, but if the saber clove through a suit or two of full beskar'gam then the power cells would be almost entirely drained and render the lightsaber as useless in battle as a training saber. The problem is not as easy to solve as popping in a few more power cells either. The lightsaber must be fully deconstructed, a time consuming process which can take several days.

Battery life aside, Korr must also deal with the blade's instability. The amount of power cells crammed into the hilt renders it highly volatile, necessitating use of the cortosis-reinforced durasteel for safety. Should Ryan encounter a Mechu-Deru specialist the blade would prove highly susceptible to tampering.

With a biometric pressure grip, Korr alone can activate the weapon.

I have to admit... I'm a little dumbfounded by this one.

The precedence is there, the wording is solid, and efforts have already been put into place to balance the submission.

I really can't find anything out of place or needing to be edited. You've already accounted for the power supply issue and the damage potential seems... appropriate and reasonable.

Though, I would like to point out that you'll need to wear gloves to use this thing. Most sources I find state that grabbing cortosis with your bare hand is pretty much like getting hit with a taser.

You've got a 465 post Invasion backing this up, of which... it looks like somewhere around 70-ish posts are dedicated to that fight.

My only real problem here is that, IC and OOC, this is a fairly blatant rip-off of Jaxton's work.
And without as much effort as Jaxton.

You've accounted for the design differences between this model and Jaxton's model... But I'm still not seeing as much effort being put into this as was put into Jaxton's lightsaber.
More importantly, I've no idea if Jaxton approves of the blatant copying or not.

So here's my solution.

In your description, you claim that your character heard about Jaxton's lightsaber and set about designing your own copy. At no point did you explain how your character understood how or why Jaxton's lightsaber is capable of the feats that it can perform.

I would like you to do a thread with Jaxton where he teaches you how he was able to get his lightsaber to cut Beskar. He does not have to help you actually construct your lightsaber, but if I can see a thread where he is willing to explain it to you, then I will know that he approves of you copying his creation and I will have the IC justification I need to approve you to copying the design.

In addition to this, I would like to see a thread that revolves around the acquisition of a lightsaber crystal and (if the first thread doesn't involve actually making the lightsaber, then) I would like to see a thread done where the lightsaber is actually constructed.

Why?

Because the additional work the above threads would require allows this submission to get approved with the same amount of effort as the submission this is based on.

I'm not giving you a minimum post count for this, but I would hope that you take the opportunity to focus on the fun of telling the classic tale of a Jedi's quest to construct his lightsaber.
As a Master, I would think it would be a little like reliving that one roadtrip you took as a teenager, but this time you have a convertible.

Hmm, I haven't heard that before. Perhaps the confusion stems from my wording. It isn't raw cortosis. It's cortosis weave. Otherwise I'd imagine that everyone wearing cortosis-weave gauntlets over their bare forearms is in for quite a.... shock. ;) If it turns out to still be the case then that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for pointing it out.

As we're all writers, I'm sure you can understand the shudder of trepidation and slight ire at the term "rip-off," as "plagiarism" is a close synonym. Just so OOC factory intellectual property rights are in the clear, I conversed with the writer on Skype about this before hand. He helped me come up with the design and provided very useful feedback.

Minor points of semantic contention aside, I'd love to do an IC thread with Jaxton, provided he has the time. I'll ask him about it. Thanks for the review! [member="War Hydra"]
