heck even star wars has examples of what would likely happen (eu stuff after the death of the emperor. all the little governors, moffs, captains, admirals etc. started "grabbing" whatever piece of the resources they felt they could keep, so the governor of (for the sake of argument) a shipyard system would try to tighten their control of it, and the ships /fleet defending it, whereas some admiral (warlord) might try to sieze it to grab whatever ships are done, and or make repairs or upgrades to their ships. and around and around....

I see it less of them giving up and more of them working a plot out. Part of the Fel Imperium rising, and the Sith spreading out, only to (hopefully) return, even stronger then before.

It is a story. And often in stories the bad guys lose. This is a case of writers making a conscious decision for the sake of the story. The bad guys are losing.
Unless you're saying that the thousands of words Sith writers are pouring into the invasions are quote unquote "Lame" and "rolling over" in which case... shame.
