So far as the senate was concerned, this was barely a war.
From his position, Darius found himself disagreeing with their summation of the situation. The Jedi Knight's vessel had come to settle upon the surface of Vjun amidst a torrent of acidic rain. He'd adorned himself with a thicker cloak and a baklava to shield his face from the effects of the rain, though he had little intention of being out in it for very long. The world itself was enveloped in a conflict that should not have concerned the Dominion, and most certainly would not have had they kept to themselves.
Three trade vessels were lost, and eight hundred lives were extinguished. The war between the remnants of the Mecrosa Order and their noble allies that had sequestered themselves on Vjun, and the Vong warlord Kruln was something the senate had decided to ignore. It was judged as a situation that would resolve itself, but that had been faulty thinking. Ships on their way to Commenor had been ambushed for the goods they carried, and those aboard these vessels were slaughtered or held for ransom. A similar fate had befallen ships passing near Aargonar, where Kruin had erected his stronghold.
Both sides of the conflict between Vjun and Aargonar had struck out at the Dominion. A response was demanded.
Two of the Dominion's armies had been raised: the Essonian Peacekeepers and the Atrisian Regiment. The former made for Aargonar, where they would lay siege to the Vong Warlord's stronghold and mop up the remnants of his powerbase. The latter had been deployed to Vjun, their shuttles deploying onto the planet's surface amidst a hail of AA fire. They would take Bast Castle, the headquarters of the Mecrosa and their allies, and then secure the rest of the world.
Darius' dropship was one of the first to hit the dirt. The Jedi Knight moved at the head of his troops, emerald lightsaber flashing like a beacon through the heavy rains that marred the soldiers' vision. The landing zone that had been chosen was a large clearing atop a craggy mountain pass a few klicks out from the castle. It was in the heart of the Mecrosan territory, but the Dominion wouldn't be staying in the open for very long.
Darius peered out along the dead mountains. No plants grew here - the acidic rains prevented that. The rock itself was dark as basalt and sharp enough to spear a man upon in many places. It was a harsh climate, but that was to be expected of such a dismal place.
"Get those speeders off the transport! Munitions and supplies here, tents there! Ordnance first, food later!" Darius shouted, gesturing toward different positions throughout the pass. The pass itself was quite high above the valleys, and the only way up the mountain was a road that the Atrisian Regiment was already working to block. Hopefully, they would manage to establish this FOB before the Mecrosa could stop them.
