Private The Sunspot Crystal

For the past three weeks, a hazardous mining cavern in the frigid world of Arkania has been invaded by raiders. The miners inside were taken hostage to prevent a quick response by local authorities.

After doing research into the cavern's history the Arkanian Government deduced that the raiders were after the Sunspot Crystal, a powerful Dark Side artifact rumored to have the power to melt Arkania's tundra and grant the wielder powerful pyrokinetic abilities.

Due to the nature of the artifact and the severity of the situation two Jedi Knights were dispatched...

With a hiss, Myvette's burning yellow saber retracted into the hilt, taking its golden light with it and leaving her side the dim icy cavern in almost complete darkness were it not for the blue light stretching across the room from the mouth of the cave. The walls, completely made of ice, were smoking with blaster scarring and the odd lightsaber strike. Myvette stretched her influence around the room, felt the life pinging in the bodies of the raiders and she breathed a sigh of relief. Things were hectic for a moment and yet somehow they managed not to kill a single one of them. Some of them had been shot by their own blaster rounds that was for sure and Myvette vividly remembered slashing one of the gunmen across the arm but it was just a surface wound. They were low-level thugs at the end of the day. Only got so far as they did because they had hostages and no one was prepared for them. But how did they learn about the crystal? And why would they even want it? There are plenty of minerals in here that they could've stolen.

"That could've gone better. They didn't even listen to what we had to say." Myvette's voice appeared in Jax Thio Jax Thio 's head before she took another glance around the cavern. The dark side of the Force was strong here. It wasn't like with Jax or Ester, a corrupting malevolent spirit striking at the core of your sanity. This presence was cold, suffocating and it was everywhere like the cavern itself had become irradiated.

"You feel it right? It's cold and not just because we're in a mine. What are we going to do when we get the crystal anyway?"

Jax activated his Lightsaber the blue blade illuminating the dimly lit crystal cave. He could hear the soft hum of Myvette's golden Lightsaber helping light up the cave as they began to venture forth. The two received a mission by the Jedi Council to take out Space Pirates who were holding the local miners hostage while retrieving a Force Imbued Crystal artifact that the miners have discovered. "Those pirates were blinded by greed," Jax communicated telepathically to Myvette. "They will fight and die for an object they don't understand."

That was how many people in the Galaxy died sadly. In a misguided sense of adventure or just to get rich quick, people would bend over backwards sell items beyond their comprehension. "Still, keep your guard up Myvette," Jax mentioned. "According to the head miner, the remaining spacers took more hostages deeper into the cave. His guess is that they want them to dig up that crystal artifact."

The Jedi Master could sense the cold feeling as well, it wormed its way to his heart the same way Darth Carnifex Darth Carnifex did to him. Jax trained himself to keep the darkness at bay but he could feel that Myvette is..... inviting it. "Focus Myvette," Jax said. "Whatever this is..... It's dangerous. I'm going to have to present this to the Jedi Council afterwards."

Momentarily, the young Jedi Padawan had lost herself in the aura of the cave. It was so cold and sinister but so intriguing to experience. She could feel that dark heart pulsating beneath Arkania's surface. Wherever it was it was close...and they would find it. Jax Thio Jax Thio 's words brought Myvette back to form and she shook her head clear of those ideas as she followed her master through the icy cavern on high alert. Even though he was a Jedi Master, Myvette's attunement to force vision let her keep up with Jax somewhat when it came to sensing the living. She could 'see' them just down the frosty corridor...and they were on edge.

"They must have heard the commotion just now." Her voice echoed internally to Jax. "If they do have more hostages then we can't fight them head-on. So what do we do?" The idea of watching an innocent person die dropped a pit in the girl's stomach. The idea of it being her fault was even worse.

As the two Jedi walked further into the mine shaft they entered a large chamber where the miners would stockpile their collected minerals. There were around twelve or so men populating the chamber and their three hostages were tied to a steel support beam in the center of the room.

"Not another step, Jedi!" One of the raiders who seemed to be the leader, dressed in a long black fur trenchcoat and a metal combat gas mask held a rifle in the air before pointing it at one of the hostages, an Arkanian boy who couldn't have been older than thirteen. "We've got orders to follow here and your council has got way too much on its mind to be worrying about us don't you think?" The other raiders raised their weapons at the two and closed in to make the Jedi easier to hit.

"So why don't you make like a bird and fly away?" His mask covered his expression but to the Miraluka the unseen became seen and Myvette knew that he was smiling. She could feel the malice behind his words, his body language, the malevolent glee in his soul, and it sparked the tinder in her heart. She tried to focus but the Raider's evil made her...angry.

"The Jedi are more than warriors Myvette," Jax communicated telepathically to Myvette. "We'll see if we can somehow negotiate for the hostages." That was unlikely since the Spacers were determined to get this artifact. In fact, throughout his life as a Jedi, negotiations rarely worked which made Jax wonder why they even tried. Maybe it was because the Jedi can say that they tried to get thug to stand down in their after-action reports? "We're not that different from cops," Jax thought. "

Jax already sensed a disturbance before the leader came up near the cliff, a tear faced young boy in front of him with a blaster pistol pointed at his temple. The Jedi Master took a breath and allowed the Force to guide his actions, Myvette though on the other hand was starting to fume with anger. Her heart already on the verge of vicious retaliation. "Focus Myvette," Jax said communicating in her mind. "Don't channel your anger on the pirate, yet concentrate on how you'll protect him after snatch him away."

"I'll remain rooted on the ground thank you very much," Reaching out in the Force, Jax Force grabbed the child ripping away from the man's arms, the boy went flying towards Jax before he slowed him down and placed him near Myvette. "But not after I take the boy," Jax said with a smirk. "So why don't you surrender, your comrades outside have. There's no need for you and the rest of your people to fight."

Myvette took a deep breath and rested a hand on the hilt of her saber, pushing the anger out of her heart and into the recesses of her brain where it couldn't impede her. This was about more than her anger or even defeating the Raiders. Right now, they were here to save lives. Her hand clutched around her saber tightly, her finger over the ignition. Ready to breathe life into the blade, the moment arrived. Her master's aura shifted and the intention behind his movement became clear as his powerful energy stretched across the room and wrapped around the hostage.

The fear-stricken boy was only more startled by his sudden lift above the ground right toward the sudden heat of Myvette's golden blade. Dexterously the Padawan swung her saber through the air and sliced through the hostage's binds just as he landed on the floor and Myvette moved to shield him, saber ready.

"You're the one who's going to die, Jedi." The head Raider growled. "Kill them!"

Through the Force, like an echo, Myvette heard the raiders open fire before they ever shot with their blasters and moved her saber to bat away their laser fire with speed and accuracy only a Force user could hope for. Not all the shots came toward Myvette however, deplorable as it was some of the Raiders were taking pop shots at the boy but the Padawan's blade moved to save him almost on its own. Low to the ground to avoid the arcs of plasma flying through the chamber the Hostages slowly began making their way toward the exit...but the others were too far to make it safely, not if the raiders intended to kill them along with her and Jax Thio Jax Thio .

No.

An outstretched hand and a ripple of power pushed the boy off the ground and out the exit with enough force to get him through the firefight unharmed without shunting him too hard.

I...refuse...to let their deaths become fuel for your evil.

Myvette raised her blade and batted away a blaster round which exploded in the stomach of the mook who fired it, sending him into shock as he fell against the wall and his consciousness collapsed. Her attention shifted to the head Raider and the two of them locked eyes for what could have only been a second in reality but felt like an eternity to the Miraluka. There was an exchange of words between them, unheard, unspoken, but the message was more clear than any either of them ever heard. Words could be mistranslated or misinterpreted, but there was nothing to be forgotten in a person's actions and Myvette's were clear.

She bolted after the Raider with her blade extended at her waist and her mouth, now a thin line, was a picture of focus as all her attention went into reading her target and reading any obstacles that stood between them. Her saber raised to block a crossbow bolt

Her actions were clear. Her intentions clearer. She was coming for him.

And just like that, all hell broke loose.

"In other words," Jax said while the pirates opened fire upon, he and Myvette. "Tuesday."

The Jedi Master twirled his Lightsaber around his body effortlessly deflecting the blaster bolts and redirecting some of them towards the shooters. One pirate was struck on the chest and he fell down motionless while the other received a blaster bolt to the skull. As the pirates continued to fall, Jax saw that Myvette was abandoning the child in order to pursue the Pirate Captain. "Myvette!" Jax shouted at her. "Get back here! You need to escort the miners out of here! Leave these guys to me!"

Jax then summoned the Force, telepathically slamming two pirates against the wall. He then leapt at another spacer shooting at the boy who was held hostage cutting his blaster rifle in half before slashing his chest with a half spin. "GO!" Jax urged Myvette. She was having a hard time controlling her anger if she gives into it.....

"No," Jax shook his head. "I can't let her fall."

The warnings of Jax Thio Jax Thio fell on clouded ears and Myvette's focus was both heightened and muddled at the same time. Unknowingly her intention to furrow out the Sunspot Crystal had invited evil into her heart and it was poisoning her vulnerable spirit. The cavern was filled with dark unnatural energy and her anger had become its conduit. Her blade rose as one of the Raiders, a Trandoshan at least twice her size, was reduced to half her size as two quick strokes of her saber cut him to pieces.

The Raider captain turned his rifle away from the Padawan and aimed it at the remaining hostages and the murderous intent written on his soul sent fear coursing through Myvette and she acted purely on her protective instinct. She reached out her hand the the fur-cloaked Raider went flying into the wall, the breath blasted from his lungs. The Jedi passed the hostages on her warpath and slashed their binds with her golden weapon, not even stopping to see to their safety as she ran after the downed leader.

The Raider slid against the wall, propped his back against it, and took hold of his rifle with his right hand before pointing and shooting at Myvette. Her saber rose and deflected the blaster round and then the next one and the one after that. He kept firing and firing as he slowly rose to his feet but every one of his shots was batted into the wall or smoking on the ground uselessly.

Myvette could 'see' it now. A glowing red line stretched across the Raider's chest and another along his neck, fault lines. Areas of focus. Areas to strike. She closed the distance and spun around with her blade, slicing the leader's weapon in two along with both of his arms as she slashed across his chest while she turned. She raised her blade adjacents to the man's shoulder and the fault lines grew even brighter before her saber slashed through the Raider's neck and his head popped from his body and onto the icy ground where his corpse soon joined him.

A moment of vigor washed over Myvette, the realization that she'd killed him just as she wanted to...and then there was nothing. A cold empty feeling that left her staggered in place with her blade raised over her victim. It was fleeting, unfocused, and locked behind a wall of excuses and good intentions but even still, it was the first step into darkness. That anger. That sense of validation existed only as long as the Raider did. And now he didn't...and now her mythical eyes could see the life ripped from his body. There were a lot of emotions that ran through her mind but king among them was shock, and someone like her couldn't express it. All she could think was...

Woah...

"Damn it," Jax muttered seeing Myvette continue to charge directly towards the Pirate Leader. His words failed to reach his Padawan, the darkness continue grow within her nullifying any sense of peace and purpose in favor of anger and rage. The Jedi Master continued to deflect shots from the Pirates killing at least three of them before running after Myvette.

Yet before Jax could reach her, Myvette executed the Pirate Leader. "No," was all Jax could muster before slowing down his heart felt like it got sliced in half. The Dark Side grabbed hold of Myvette compelling her to strike the pirate leader down. This wasn't just a kill; this was a kill done in cold blood. The first and what Jax had hoped would be the last.

"Myvette....." Jax approached the young girl and gently placed his hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, I know you're shocked right now but I ask you to clear your mind and focus."

He will NOT allow Myvette to continue walking down the path of darkness especially he succumbed to his dark impulses.

Myvette stood motionless over the pirate leader, even the touch of her master and his words of encouragement did little to reach her soul. Her soul...she could 'see' it. A dark crimson flame burning with an intensity that corrupted the light within her spirit and the fear that came with the realization only fed this flame and made it stronger. She knew what it was, its source was the same as the affliction within Jax Thio Jax Thio . The dark side except his spirit was pure and righteous, the sinister currents of energy from his father had to creep inside him to take hold.

But Myvette...the darkness came from within. She wasn't being poisoned by the cave but revealed. There was a gaping hole buried at the foundation of her core and it was...terrifying.

"I-I-I'm sorry..."

Myvette's voice was shaky and flickering in Jax's head, it was debatable if she even meant to send a message or if her regret had broadcast her thoughts. The Padawan's saber retracted and her quivering hands nearly dropped her hilt onto the icy ground. She...she killed him and not just killed him she murdered him. That reality was just setting in when one of the raiders, shunted into the wall by Jax's telekinesis, came to and raised his blaster in his injured stupor.

"Blasted Jedi..."

Malice rippled through the Force and pinged in Myvette's head. Shaken from her thoughts she turned toward the source of danger and felt her heart gripped by despair. Without an explanation or even the conscious thought of movement to aid her, Myvette pushed herself off Jax, putting space between them as the blaster bolt soared past and into a crate of mining charges behind them.

No...

In a blazing ball of fire, the mining charges all detonated at once, destroying the ice wall in its vicinity and removing the cavern's structural support. As the ice crumbled and intense heat filled the trembling chamber the icy ground shuddered and cracked violently. Danger overloaded Myvette's preceptory powers from all angles, between the rising heat, crumbling walls, and the proximity of the hostages to all the destruction the young Padawan never took notice of the ground giving way beneath her feet and into the passage below.

"Master! Watch out-"

Myvette's warning died on her tongue and she fell through the floor, an avalanche of sleet and shattered ice falling between her and Jax as if the world itself sought to separate them. Myvette held her arms in front of her to shield herself from the falling ice but as she fell further into the mines and eventually into a massive glacial chamber constructed of frost she knew getting out of there wouldn't be as simple as clawing herself free from the hole in the floor.

1.jpg

Myvette's thoughts faltered as she took in her surroundings as she fell from the air but fear wracked her senses and she looked down realizing that she was falling toward an underground canal that flowed with the intensity of a raging river. The violent current snaked through the glacier and off an icy cliff toward a pitfall that even her Force vision couldn't scope out. Seconds away from impact, Myvette tucked her arms and legs in as she broke the frigid water's surface and sank beneath the icy canal.

Her limbs spread out and she began to swim toward the surface on instinct. Where biological eyes would suffer beneath the waves her spiritual insight flourished and she nearly broke through to the surface before a huge chunk of ice came crashing into the water and slammed into her with enough inertia to knock the wind from her lungs and push the now limp Padawan further into the depths as the water rapidly rushed her toward the waterfall.

Jax already sensed the disturbance and braced himself, the mines around the cave exploded sending he and Myvette falling from the floor and headed towards a large ice sheet. Calling upon the Force, Jax managed to flip midair landing on his feet with ease before looking around for Myvette. "Myvette!" Jax communicated telepathically to his Padawan. "Where are you?!"

He sensed her presence, seeing her head towards the waterfall. "No!" Jax raised his hand lifting Myvette from the water having her float towards him. "I got you," Jax whispered gently placing her down on the floor and using the Force to remove the water from her lungs. "Breathe," he whispered. "Just breathe."

Her clothes were dark with icy liquid and her skin was blue from the frigid water. Myvette was delivered from the violent underground torrent and onto an icy riverbed where via the Force a puddle of water was coaxed from her lungs and out through her mouth. Thumping against her chest, Myvette's heart worked tirelessly to return circulation to her muscles, twitching as she awoke with a stir and gently lifted her head off the frigid ground, clumps of wet hair sticking to her face.

Her body demanded air and Myvette responded with a huge gasping breath followed by immediate regret. Her lungs burned and cried out in pain as the cold air rushed inside quicker than she could handle and the Miraluka clutched her chest in pain. Paranoia infected her thoughts and Myvette took short slow breaths from then on as she drowsily rose from the ground and put a hand to her waist. Her lightsaber was still there, excellent. She wasn't a complete failure.

"Thank you, master." Myvette's gratitude flooded into Jax's mind as the Padawan leaned backward and fell onto her rump. It might've seemed she was injured if not for the way she quickly hugged her legs and buried her head between the space. "You're such a great Jedi. I'm sorry you've been stuck with someone like me."

Myvette's fist balled and her teeth clenched as the ice itself somehow grew colder around her as if her spirit was more frigid than frost.

"A murderer. But I'm just being hard on myself. No, not this time."

"You acted out in anger," Jax replied telepathically to Myvette, those were words that she didn't want to hear but Jax had failed too many apprentices ranging from Aveline Cuiléin Aveline Cuiléin to Nitya Xeraic Nitya Xeraic , he can't fail Myvette. "You're going to be okay just breathe."

Weak words that Jax spoke, but he couldn't think of anything else to say that could massage her fear. "I'm hardly a great Jedi Myvette," Jax said. "I like you have a lot to learn, but you need to not give into your fear. Those are seeds that can begin your path to the Dark Side."

He remembered how his father exploited Jax's fear morphed it into rage in which Jax embraced it. "For what it's worth though," Jax sighed. "You did save that kid from being killed. But a Jedi resorts to killing only when there is no choice and that requires a calm mind."

Jax sensed great fear and doubt in Myvette, It'll take a lot more training for her to focus. "Come on," he said. "Let's find a way out of here."

Myvette turned her head away from her master indignantly, she wasn't mad at him but rather at herself, and that anger was projecting in an admittedly childish way. She didn't want a lecture and she didn't want to be told what she already knew. She knew she'd acted out of anger and she knew fear was weaved into her spirit which fueled her dark intentions. But isn't that what it means to be a Jedi? Protecting the innocent? Jax said himself that she'd saved that kid so why? Why did it all feel so...wrong?

The girl knew why. That kill wasn't out of righteousness or a need to protect. She saw evil and the chokehold it had on people and saw to it that its head and the head of its vessel rolled on the floor. Myvette wanted him dead and that was the difference. The good she did wasn't a product of her murderous intentions, it was a side effect. Murder happened to facilitate good this time. But what happens when it doesn't?

Myvette shuddered at the possibility.

Taking a deep breath, Myvette did her best to clear her thoughts and stand up. It was terribly cold down here and her swim in the river didn't help. Like Jax, she was eager to escape the cavern. He turned and began walking and Myvette followed, her thoughts turning sour. They were only trapped in here because of her...why did she have to be such a screw-up? Myvette shook her head loose of that feeling and focused on her immediate surroundings, getting bogged down in self-loathing will just get them into more trouble. She didn't have the luxury of feeling sorry for herself and she didn't deserve to either.

After walking through the cavern for about a half-hour the ice had receded and been replaced by a glistening stone passage. More importantly, though, the rocky corridor was seeped in a sinister dark energy as if evil had poisoned the rocks themselves. Few things provided Myvette with an idea of color and strong force energies were one of them. For her in particular the walls and floor were an eerie crimson that she'd learned to associate with darkness.

What was even more concerning was that she knew exactly why this was happening.

The Sunspot Crystal! That's why the raiders set those charges, they'd realized it was here under the ice.

The Miraluka silently hugged her stomach and leaned forward just a bit, the closer they got to the crystal the more nauseous she felt. Even from here, she could sense it, how hungry it was for power. Up until now, she'd faced the malicious side of darkness but now she was forced to endure its greed. The Padawan would have been afraid but even her fear was being consumed by the crystal.

I could sense it when we were in the mines. It infected everything like a disease, but I didn't feel too affected. I was driven and determined to find it and save the miners. And then when I...after the battle and I fell, I felt empty and ashamed. I think that was the darkness before, I thought I was immune to the crystal's power but I was the one infected by it.

The two Jedi reached a massive chamber. Icicles hung from the ceiling and frost coated the ground but the structure underneath was still distinguishable, a royal court with walls carved out of the rocks and a throne at the far end made of jagged black metal. Even creepier were the dozens of frozen corpses lined across the floor facing the throne. Cast in an eerie orange light, on all fours and prostrating themselves the corpses seemed to be showing reverence to the skeleton idly sitting on the throne wearing a crown forged of bone.

The evil of the cavern and its light centered around a single object in the king's hand, a glowing amber crystal that reflected not the light of the chamber by the energy of the Force and bathed the king's followers in it. As the Jedi grew closer they would likely notice an outlier in the crowd, a man leaning forward on one foot with his arm extended toward the throne. There was a rusted javelin corrupted by the ice nestled in the king's ribcage and a morbid picture played itself out.

"The Arkanians never said what happened to the Sith Lord who wielded the crystal right?" Myvette reached out telepathically. "He just disappeared one day with the crystal. Now we know why. I can't believe his own followers would betray him though why would you do something like that...?"

Jax could sense the anxiety grabbing hold of Myvette's body, thought her intentions of killing the leader of the was understandable, the way she did it made her vulnerable to the pull of the Dark Side. Gently placing his hand on Myvette, Jax used the Force to heat up her body since the water was clearly below temperature and she was freezing. "I've done worse Myvette," Jax communicated telepathically to her. "A lot worse, there's no need to beat yourself over this, the only you can do is to learn."

He could sense a massive presence inside of the cave, a dark echo calling to him. Was it the Sunspot Crystal? It had to be. Myvette sensed it as well the corrupting power weakening her. "It's very strong," Jax said. "To the point where even non force sensitives can feel its presence. Let's be cautious because it feels like the thing wants to be found."

The NJO will need to take a look at the Sunspot Crystal, the power that it emanates is enormous. Such an object doesn't need to be out in the open like this where it could lure in non-force sensitives or..... a doubting Padawan. "I have a feeling this Crystal is of Sith origin," Jax said. Whatever happens Myvette do NOT reach out and touch it. Let me handle it okay?"

Myvette hugged herself in a guarded posture, silently nodding her head at Jax's warning. Touch the crystal? She didn't want anything to do with it! She wanted to leave, as far away as fast as possible. The object radiated evil and corrupted the very ice in which it was embedded. The Padawan never thought that water itself could be touched by evil and taught morality but here she was, a cavern so steeped in darkness that even someone who'd trained their life to oppose it had fallen victim.

Myvette's Force-vision gave her a broader sense of things even the greatest of Force wielders could go their lives without experiencing. What took decades of training for others came naturally to the Padawan, the flow of energy from the ice to the crystal was apparent to her and uniquely dangerous in its function.

"Master." Myvette's voice echoed in Jax's mind. "Don't touch the light. It's what killed those corpses down there. Heat flows from the light and into the crystal, fueling its power."

What a vicious invention. Through energy theft and a perversion of the Force, the user was granted incredible pyrokinetic power. Is that why the king summoned his followers here? To sap their energy and fuel his power? That's why they killed him, he was using them like...like...batteries! Disgusting. It did beg the question though...

The crystal was said to have the power to melt Arkania's tundra. How much energy would you have to siphon to do something like that? Whatever Jax ends up doing with the crystal I hope involves sealing it away or just destroying it.

Though Jax could feel the crystal's corrupting presence wrapping itself around his heart, he persevered resisting its hooks. However, he wasn't worried about the whether the crystal will affect him. "Stand back," Jax said to Myvette as he took off his robe and immediately blanketed the crystal. "I feel its power too," Jax communicated to his Padawan staring down at the covered crystal. "It's volatile enough take down an entire city."

If a person somehow found enough of these crystals, they could have more than enough to destroy an entire planet. "We'll need to lock this cave down once we get to the surface." Jax said. "There could be more crystals like this in the cave, we can't allow it to fall into the wrong hands."

Especially with the Dark Empire starting their foray into Alliance space. "Come on Myvette let's get out of here," he said. "You take point."
