Bloodbath at Valen VI
Background
As the battle for Valen IV heats up on the ground, the fleets of the galaxy are massing for battle. Their target is the small moon Valen VIj (also known as Tyr). In orbit around this otherwise unremarkable moon is an ancient freighter centuries old, said to date from the time of the Old Republic. The contents of this ruined ship are unknown, but are likely extremely valuable.
Thus the two fleets converged on the rock. The Alliance of the Republic, Protectorate and Mandalorians arrived first, beginning to salvage their prize. They also set up a small space station further out to help defend them against attack. However, before they could even properly start their salvage, word arrived that the Axis fleet was exiting hyperspace.
The Allies were heavily outnumbered, but their task was clear; defend and search the ruined ship, prevent the Axis from penetrating into the inner system and preserving their ships.
The Axis task was just as clear; destroy Allied ships, break through their blockade, and seize the ruined ship for their own purposes.
Forces Involved
Each character which has signed up may choose a fleet based on the following criteria:
- All ships must be from their faction.
- The character may select a flagship of any size based on the approved ships for that faction. Unique vessels may obviously only be selected once. THIS FLAGSHIP DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR METRE LIMITS.
- If the character is in an Allied (Protectorate, Republic or Mandalorian) faction they may select up to 8,000m of their faction’s ships from the ‘Approved Starships’ area of the Factory.
- If the character is in an Axis (Fringe, CIS, Sith Empire, Black Sun, Atrisian Empire) faction they may select up to 4,000m of their faction’s ships from the ‘Approved Starships’ area of the Factory.
- This fleet may NOT contain only capital ships (Star Destroyers, Heavy Cruisers and Battlecruisers).
- The fleet may only contain ONE ship over 1700 metres, including the flagship. If the flagship is more than 1700m you cannot have another over 1700m.
- Attack craft do not count towards selection unless they are chosen separately from their carrier at the start of the battle.
- Please include a name for each ship and a link to their approved submission in the factory.
This fleet list is to be PM’ed to me and not posted in public. I will post the fleet list on the day the battle starts. I will reply when your fleet is approved with a unique ID for your fleet. This will help me plot your ships on the map and make readers easily able to identify your ships.
Objectives
Allies (Republic/Jedi, Mandalorians, Protectorate):
- Salvage the ruined ship (Hex 15.16) (500 points + faction reward)
- Defend the space station (Hex 03.14) (200 points)
- Destroy Axis ships (Metres/10 points per ship destroyed)
- Prevent Axis ships breaking through (Metres/10 points per Axis capital ship still on the battle at the end)
Axis (CIS, Lords of the Fringe, Sith Empire, Atrisian Empire, Black Sun)
- Salvage the ruined ship (Hex 15.16) (500 points + faction reward)
- Destroy the space station (Hex 03.14) (200 points)
- Destroy Allied ships (Metres/10 points per ship destroyed)
- Move ships off the Allied board edge (Row 18)(Metres/10 points per ship removed, attack craft do not count)
The Battle
The battle will be resolved by RPing the results, without dice or other complications. Fairplay and sportsmanship is therefore highly important. Give and take is vital.
Allied ships start in any hex in row 18. Axis ships start in any hex in row 1.
The battle will have ‘turns’ where each fleet moves in no particular order. Once all fleets, Allied and Axis, have moved, the turn will end. Faction leaders have the ability to move their faction’s vessels if they have not posted for a full day. Ideally therefore, each turn will take 1-2 days. There are a limited number of turns before the battle ends, the exact amount will not be disclosed until after the first turn.
All ships may move during their turn unless they have something preventing them. Ships move an amount equal to (11- the craft’s sublight speed). In the case of a Star Destroyer with sublight speed of 8, it may move up to 3 hexes in its turn. Facing is not important.
A ship may not end its move in the same hex as a non-faction vessel. For instance, a Sith ship could not end its move in the same hex as a Fringe ship.
A ship may not end its move in the same hex as the ruined transport ship.
All ships may fire during their turn if in range. They may not fire through the moon or friendly ships. Capital ships (Heavy Cruisers, Star Destroyers and Battlecruisers) may fire up to 6 hexes in any direction, Escorts (Corvettes, Frigates and Cruisers) may fire up to 3 hexes in any direction. Attack craft (fighters and bombers) may attack my moving through a single enemy ship’s hex per turn.
Attacks against attack craft are almost futile except when they are attacking in this way.
The space station counts as a capital ship for firing purposes.
Salvaging the Ruined Ship
Salvaging the ruined ship is obviously one of the main objectives and highlights of the battle. There are two ways to salvage it.
- Have more of your faction’s escorts or capital ships in the hexes surrounding it than any other faction at the end of the battle (measured in total metres).
- Board the ship ICly and RP investigating it. Each turn spent doing so might yield some minor items to salvage.
Only by holding the ship for your faction at the end of the battle will you guarantee the best prize.
Post Format
In order to ensure there is no misunderstandings, and to make sure no one misses anything important, posts will have a certain format when they contain orders. Posts do not need to contain IC RPing if the writer does not wish to, but orders MUST be in the following format, whether they are repeated IC or not. This is so that no one is left in the dark as to what is going on.
Below is the format and an example move.
Character Name: (The character you are writing)

There will be a list of all ship submissions currently being used in the battle in the OOC thread.
Victory
Once the appointed turn number has expired or there is general consent amongst writers from both sides, the battle is over. The objectives above contain a guide to how points should be allocated. The side with the most points wins the battle.
The side which salvages the ruined ship, in addition to getting points, receives an event prize for their faction. Only one faction can claim the prize however.
If one side has accumulated 50% more points than the other, they are eligible for a second, special event prize.
Other prizes may be awarded for specific writer’s actions if they are especially noteworthy, at the discretion of staff.
Notes
Due to the disparity in numbers, I decided to turn this from a straight head on battle to a more event driven one. Thus, the Allies became the defenders against the overwhelming power of the Axis fleet, trying to hold them off and still maintain control of the ruined ship.
One interesting consequence of this is that the Axis fleets have to cross the entire battlefield in order to leave, which makes slower, yet deadlier, capital ships less of an automatic choice. Faster escorts which can slip past the enemy may be a better choice than trying to bludgeon one’s way through.
Although victory is given to either Axis or Allies, only one faction can claim the main event prize. Since this means that faction can’t have its ships leaving the battle, there will doubtless be discussion about which faction has the prize….
