Astrid snorted at her packmate’s response and shook her head. Perhaps now wasn’t the appropriate time for joking, not in the eyes of the elders, but neither Astrid nor Redd cared enough to think about it. Laughter was the best medicine to ease the panic. Gerwalds voice cut over their conversation. His command forced Astrid to double her efforts. The elders were beginning to panic, and no wonder. It was easy to see the concern etched into Confederate faces.
BOOM!
An explosion rocked the walls of the mansion, forcing Astrid to steady herself on a near by table. The room was blanketed in a layer of thick dust and smoke, causing several people to hack and cough, but none were heard over the sudden, blaring alarms. Astrid reached out to place a comforting hand on the nearest elder’s shoulder, but before her fingertips could even grace their robes…
BOOM!
“Yes, I have this!” She responded with a firmer and more confident tone than even she had expected, but there it was. Astrid lunged for the door to the clansmoot. A stream of elders followed after her, shuffling their quickest across the road to the safety of the underground bunker. As the door closed behind them, Astrid let out a sigh of relief. Untill…
BOOM!
Another explosion.
Almost on queue, Gerwald confirmed his orders. So the bunkers were no longer safe, and the evacuation sites were their goal. Astrid remembered Redd saying something about the evac sites, but what the hell were Lyleks? There was no time to think about it. Astrid shouldered the door open and let a wave of burning red heat and blinding light rush into the bunker. The elders were not long behind as she crossed the street, one pale hand directing them through the winding streets toward the nearest evac site.
Astrid put her arm up, blocking the path of the slowly shuffling Elders. Her other hand slowly made its way to the hilt of the silvery blade resting on her back. The unmanned lylek growled a deep, guttural click at her movements. Astrid responded with her own, baring sharp white teeth. ”Reeeeedd…” Her voice called out, full of uncertainty, to her fellow sister through the magics they both shared. ”There is an overgrown mutant beetle in our way…”
