Duel Training the Trainee

Helen took a ready stance in front of him. She had yet to begin studying any of the specific lightsaber forms. But she’d witnessed a couple of the other students studying various forms. The one that came to mind now was Form Three.

What did they call it again? Sore Easel? Something like that. The one that’s good for not getting poked by these plasma sticks.

Helen had observed a few of the other trainees using this form. And she was thinking now to imitate its core technique. Primarily keeping the movements of the blade tight and concise. No unnecessary movement.

And that was what she would try to imitate here. She had no formal instruction in the form, but she was going to give it a shot anyway.

He stepped into a thrust towards her throat, and she brought her blade up and around to push his thrust to the side so it would miss her. She would however overcommit to this. She would be fast enough to intercept, but she was moving too fast and would have a hard time bringing her blade back to defend herself from another attack from him.

But that’s why she was practicing. To learn from mistakes like that.

"Soresu. Yes. Good, very good! The Way of the Mynock—conservation of movement, the use of minimal effort for maximum defense."

He circled her slowly, watching the way she held her blade, how her stance shifted in response to his presence. "You're on the right track. The trick is control. You don't need to meet force with force—just enough pressure to redirect, no more."

He stepped in again, a quick feint to her left before angling a real strike toward her opposite side. "Now, tighten it up. Keep your movements inside your centerline, or you'll leave yourself open."

"Well... I don't have any formal instruction on it, so I don't imagine it will be very proper." She commented. It also wasn't really her way of doing things. She much preferred the more aggressive style of fighting. This standing and waiting for an attack to come was not her style. And she didn't like it much. But she also knew that it would be a necessary skill to have. So it was best if she learned it quickly.

Then she fell for his feint. And she was too slow in redirecting her blade to intercept his. His blade touched her arm, and she let out a pained grunt as the practice saber gave her a nasty jolt. "Understood... I'll keep that in mind."

She reassumed the position, hilt of the saber held at the level of her midsection, and blade presented forward.

Braze didn't press the advantage immediately. Instead, he stepped back, giving Helen the space to reset, physically, but mentally. The hit had landed, evening the score, and with it came a moment for re-calibration.

"Soresu is about patience,"
he reminded her, voice steady, measured. "Of both the body and the mind. If you chase every blow, you'll overextend, leave yourself open." He lifted his saber slightly, a subtle invitation for her to come at him first.

This wasn't about strength; it was about control, refinement. And she was learning. He could see it in the way she adjusted.
