Private Trouble on Denon

The cityscape of Denon sprawled beneath the overcast sky, its neon lights casting vibrant reflections on the rain-slicked streets. Towering skyscrapers, their facades adorned with flashing advertisements in various alien languages, rose into the misty darkness. The hum of speeders and the distant murmur of bustling nightlife formed a soundtrack for Vess to work by.

Seated on the edge of a rooftop, Vess typed away on a portable terminal in her lap. She had a jacket pulled over her head to shield both herself and the terminal from the downpour. It seemed like it was always raining on Denon. Eventually, you just get numb to it, she surmised, but she wasn't quite there yet.

Vess was working on a new contract, one that several other slicers had seemingly passed on. Was it too hard or too much trouble? Truth be told, when it came to such things, Vess didn't really care. It was all about the challenge and then getting away with it. She grew up on the streets of Druckenwell before moving to Denon, and at nineteen, she was sitting on a pile of credits that would make a Hutt jealous. The trade-off was that she had been shot, stabbed, almost arrested several times, and was wanted in at least three systems she was aware of.

Her hazel eyes, sharp and focused, scanned the lines of code on her terminal. She was deep into a high-stakes hack, targeting one of the powerful corps on Denon. The rain poured off the edges of the roof, as she worked. Each keystroke brought her closer to breaching the security layers, and the occasional flash of lightning illuminated her determined expression.

A sudden beep from the terminal signaled a breakthrough. She had accessed the core of the system, the treasure trove of data now within her reach. She quickly began downloading the files, her heart pounding as the progress bar inched forward. In the distance, the wail of sirens began to rise, faint but growing louder. She couldn’t afford to be caught, not now. With one last glance at the download, she mentally calculated the remaining time. Almost there.

Vess knew the risks. The corporate giants on Denon were notorious for their ruthless protection of digital assets, and being caught could mean a fate worse than death. But the potential rewards outweighed the dangers. Her contact had promised a hefty payout for the information she sought, and for that and the challenge she would risk it all. The rain continued to fall, a relentless reminder of the world around her. But for now, she was focused, determined, and dangerously close to completing her mission.

"Come on..." she pleaded quietly with the terminal as the progress bar crawled forward, each second feeling like an eternity. Her anxiety began to rise. She lifted her eyes and saw the lights from private security approaching on the horizon. She didn't have long at all. Then, all at once, the adrenaline rush kicked in as the download happily chimed its completion.

A satisfied smile formed at the corners of her mouth. She quickly packed up her belongings, stood up, and threw her bag over her shoulder. Without a moment to lose, she ran as fast as she could across the rain-soaked rooftops, leaping from roof to roof, dodging under drainage piping and navigating the urban terrain with practiced agility. The cityscape of Denon blurred around her, the neon lights reflecting off the slick surfaces as she made her escape. Suddenly it was as if the whole city came alive, more and more security was joining the hunt. A blip hit a small screen she wore on her wrist. Yup that's what she expected, a be on the look out. Meaning that they don't KNOW its her but they suspect, but for corpos thats all it takes.

She turned down and alley way and jumped over a railing before running down a flight of stairs, her best bet that she knew was to keep moving and not stop.

What was going on?

Valery pulled down the hood of her robes that she had wrapped around her tunic and looked up. Her long, dark-brown ponytail cascaded down behind her into the rain, and her fiery gaze seemed to project light as it searched the sky. She scanned her environment, following the sound of sirens and moving vehicles. So many were on the move, all converging to something up ahead in the distance.

But what?

Eager to find out, Valery ditched her outer robes and stepped into the rain, just wearing her jumpsuit. With a tap against her hip, she checked for her weapon, and with that secured, she began to move. A powerful, Force-assisted jump brought her up to the roof tops, from where she began to sprint.

So fast, that it almost seemed like she weaved her way around rain drops.

Whoever was out there — Valery was going to find them.

The sound of the security forces was becoming distant, indicating either she was exiting their search perimeter or they were calling off the search. Either way, it was good news for her. She stopped for a moment, wiped some hair sticking to her forehead out of the way, and checked the screen on her wrist again. No new alerts. They were calling off the active search. It was simple enough to evade surveillance on Denon if you knew the back ways that weren't watched as often.

All at once, she realized just how wet she was and looked up to the sky with a shout, "Do you ever stop raining?!" Sighing and shaking her head, she carefully climbed off the rooftop down to ground level. She quickly adjusted her backpack, making sure all her items were accounted for, then pulled the hood up on her jacket and kept to the back ways. She had small safe houses all over the city, one of which wasn't far from where she was, so she started heading that way. But something made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.

She quickly looked behind her and above, not seeing any immediate threat, but something was definitely off. It felt like being poked in the back of the head, and she didn't like it. Resuming the path to her hideout, she hastened her steps short of a full run. She didn't know why she was suddenly feeling so concerned, but it felt like somebody was after her. A short trip later she entered a more dingy side of town, stepping over trash and debris in the alley ways she walked to a door and punched in a code and walked inside dropping her backpack on the floor and quickly pulling her pocket terminal up and typing up a quick message to her contact confirming the job was complete there would be the hand off then she would get paid and be free and clear.

Lightning split open the sky, illuminating the streets and alleys down below. Valery hardly needed the light to see her target moving away, having escaped the pursuit of law enforcement, but it did give her a better impression of who she was following. Especially the woman's eyes had drawn Valery's attention — there was a glow to them in Denon's darkness that she never saw in anybody besides herself.

Could it be?

From the Shadows, Valery continued to follow her across roof tops. Always out of sight, relying on her senses to keep her on the right path. It was more than likely that this woman would feel like she was being followed, especially once she was closer to her own destination, but it would already be too late.

Dropping down from the rooftop, Valery cushioned the drop with a small burst of Force energy and stopped in front of the door. Vess Sadragen Vess Sadragen had just entered it using some special code, but Valery had no idea what it was and no skills that would help her crack the code. But she had something far better.

Stepping forward, the Jedi Master tapped into her training as a former Shadow and phased through the door. All at once, the rain vanished and Valery heard the gentle sound of rain drops hitting the floor up ahead.

She was in here.

"I know you're in here," Valery began. "I just want to talk."

Vess was still typing away on her terminal when she heard someone call out from inside her little hideaway. Her eyes widened in alarm. She quickly threw her terminal into her bag and grabbed a couple of essential items off the shelf next to the bed she was sitting on.

She sprang to her feet on the bed, her mind racing. With a swift motion, she began opening the window, hoping to make a quick escape. Rain poured in, drenching the sill and the floor beneath, but she didn't care. She had to get out before they found her. The voices inside grew louder, and she knew she only had seconds to disappear into the night.

"I know you're in here," Valery began. "I just want to talk."

She laughed. "Right, that's what you corpos do—talk. No thanks, lady!" She clamored out the window and dropped to the ground below. One of the items she had grabbed had a short timer on it, and she quickly set it before tossing it back through the window. Then she broke into a run, her heart pounding in her chest. The timer on the device was only five seconds, if Valery found her way into the bedroom no harm would come to her but there would be a very bright flash.

As she sprinted through the rain-soaked alleyways, she pulled up her arm and looked at her wrist terminal, quickly keying in a sequence. An electromagnetic pulse fired off inside the hideaway, frying all the electronics. Vess didn't slow down, her breaths coming in ragged gasps as she navigated the familiar backstreets. She had to get to another safe house. This wasn't the first time she had to make a hasty escape, and it probably wouldn't be the last.

The sound of a window opening was all she needed to know. Valery picked up the pace, trying to sprint down the hallway to catch the woman before her escape, "Wait, I'm not a-" As soon as she entered the room, she felt a flash of danger but it was already too late. The flashbang went off, stunning her senses long enough for the woman to make her escape through the window. But even though it struck her hearing and sight, Valery did not lose track.

The Force was not easily stunned by a flashbang, and Valery's senses were sharp.

Delayed by the flashbang, Valery climbed out of the window and moved back into the rain. She knew that her target likely had other tricks up her sleeve, but they would be much harder if Valery regained her height advantage. So, with one powerful jump, the Jedi Master moved back up to the roof tops and began to move across.

Stalking the woman at a frightening pace.

Vess continued racing through the alleys and side streets, but there was a problem. She had already pushed herself to the limit, sprinting to the hideout as fast as she could and now racing to escape at a full run with adrenaline pumping. While she was in good shape, there was only so long her body could hold out. She began to slow, her breathing quickened further, and she knew she had gone past her limits. She stopped midway in an alley, gasping for breath. Even breathing was starting to hurt from all the running. She needed a few deep, steadying breaths to recover.

"Maybe Lana is right," she gasped between breaths. "Need to get out more." She sighed as her breathing finally began to return to normal. Pondering her options, Vess knew she couldn't risk the main streets—security would definitely ID her in no time. She didn't have the stamina to run any further, and just walking wouldn't shake off her pursuer.

She set her bag down and pulled out a blaster. Leaving the bag in a somewhat obvious location to attract attention, she hid behind a dumpster. She had only ever fired the blaster at bottles, but it was for self-defense. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and waited, her heart pounding as she strained to listen for any approaching footsteps.

She had stopped.

Valery watched from above, any sound she made obscured by the heavy rainfall that splattered down into the alley. The younger woman looked exhausted, barely able to stand on her feet as she gasped for air. It wasn't surprising, given the fact she had been on the run for so long, but it also gave Valery an opportunity. As Vess moved to hide behind a dumpster, a weapon drawn and her eyes focused on the ground below, Valery stepped closer to the edge of the roof.

Where she wasn't seen.

Without a warning, Valery jumped down and landed behind Vess, still at a safe distance but where the dumpster would offer no protection. If anything, it helped pin her down and kept her from easily running away.

"I'm not one of them," Valery said, her hand lingering close to the hilt of her weapon in case of emergency. "I just want to talk."

In the darkness of Denon's night and with heavy rain falling down, Valery knew her appearance was often intimidating. Her orange eyes seemed to glow with a fiery intensity, her body and posture displayed strength, and the darker tunic likely didn't help either. To keep Vess from seeing her as a threat, Valery tried her best to smile.

Vess opened her eyes, watching the area near her bag, her hands tightly gripping the blaster as she waited. The rain kept falling, adding to the tension. She was starting to relax, thinking maybe she had finally lost her pursuer, when suddenly a voice came from behind her. In a panic, she squeezed the trigger, firing a shot wildly into the alley before dropping the blaster entirely and spinning around, ready to run. Instead, she found herself face-to-face with a woman. Slowly standing up from her kneeling position, Vess noticed the woman's hand resting near a lightsaber on her hip and immediately understood.

"Yeah, corpos don't carry lightsabers last I checked," Vess said, her voice tinged with both relief and curiosity. A Jedi being here was unusual enough, but the unmistakable glow of the woman's eyes drew Vess's attention. Though she didn't know much about her people, she recognized the unique characteristics. "You're Keshian... and a Jedi at that. Why are you on Denon?" The young woman was no longer scared but now more confused by the Jedi standing before her, her curiosity piqued by the unexpected encounter.

Valery didn't move as the shot went off, her eyes only shifting to make sure nobody had overheard. When she felt certain that they were still alone, Valery looked back at Vess and noticed a change. She wasn't as apprehensive anymore, and certainly less likely to shoot again or run off. The sight of her lightsaber had made her realize she wasn't dealing with the same people who were after her earlier.

Perhaps it even helped her relax.

"Glad you can at least recognize that I'm Keshian. Some just think I'm a Sith Lord," Valery joked, hoping it would help keep the conversation light-hearted. To add to it, she removed her hand from her lightsaber and stood with a relaxed posture. She didn't want Vess to get the impression that she was in trouble.

"I was here for an assignment but I noticed you had quite the following earlier. Made me curious. I'll also admit, I noticed you were Keshian and I rarely see our people leave their homeworld."

Vess relaxed more by the moment, coming down from the rush of adrenaline she had been experiencing. She watched Valery as she spoke, noticing her calm and collected demeanor. At the mention of the Sith, Vess raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "Yeah, I guess I shouldn't assume anyone with a lightsaber is a Jedi." Vess shoved her hands into the pockets of her jacket. When Valery asked about the security response from earlier, a smirk touched the young woman's lips.

"Yeah, they might be a little mad at me right now. Not the first time, won't be the last. Gotta keep food on the table, you know? My skills are just good at pissing off security." When Valery mentioned her being Keshian again, Vess nodded. "Yeah, don't see too many of us out and about. Never been to the homeworld myself, to be fair. Oh, and sorry about the flash grenade earlier." She winced at the memory and tilted her head in a slightly apologetic way.

"Anyway, now that I know you aren't here to kill or arrest me, let's get out of this fething rain, huh?" She pulled her hands back out of her jacket and brushed her hair out of her face as she walked past Valery and went to collect her blaster, then walked over to toss it into her backpack, before finally throwing the soggy bag over her shoulder. She then turned and looked at her Jedi friend. "Come on I have another place nearby, we can at least be dry."

"Don't worry though. I'm not a Sith." Valery smirked in return and flashed a quick wink before she focused on the subject that really interested her. Why had this woman been on the run? Her answer was somewhat vague, but it at least seemed like she wasn't causing trouble just to do damage to innocents.

Was it really about food, though?

"Well, it's good to finally meet another Keshian, I suppose. We can talk more about your... exploits somewhere else." Preferably somewhere it wasn't raining this much. "And no worries about the flash bang. You didn't know I was Keshian and friendly yet." Her eyes were more sensitive, which Vess would also understand.

Especially in the dark, when their eyes shifted into the Infrared spectrum. Not only did it give them an edge, but it also made for an almost glowy look to their eyes. Vess' own gaze in the dark looked quite beautiful for that same reason.

Pulling her thoughts away from Keshian eyes, Valery nodded and agreed to move, "Sounds good. I can make a fire to dry our clothes and hair a little when we get there."

Vess felt reassured that Valery was neither Sith nor hampered by the flash grenade. She turned and started leading Valery to her hideaway, listening as Valery spoke and nodding along. The mention of 'exploits' elicited a laugh. "Yeah, 'exploits' is a good word for it, I guess. Corps on Denon, like on other worlds, tend to exploit their people. This makes them lots of enemies, and then you have their rivals who want to get one over on the competition." She shrugged and continued, "When they need something done, they call me. The job tonight was a risky one—nobody wanted to touch it. High risk, high reward." Clearly, she wasn't concerned with doing harm to the corporations, seeing them as monolithic oppressors allowed her to justify a lot.

The walk to the new hideout wasn't far. Vess punched in the code, and the door popped open. She pulled it open, making way for her and Valery to head in. Once inside, she peeled off her soggy backpack and set it on the floor by the door. Then she quickly took off her wet jacket and threw it onto the floor next to the bag. She walked over to a chair, sat down, and removed her drenched shoes, tossing them toward the pile at the door. She reached up, gathered her wet hair, and began tying it up into a ponytail.

As she did this, she paused briefly as if she just realized she didn't even know this womans name yet. "Ah you know I completely forgot introductions. I swear I am civilized, somewhat..." she grinned and waved from the chair to Valery. "Name is Vess"

High risk, high reward.

It had certainly seemed that way when half the city was chasing after her. But she had clearly been successful despite these risks, and if she was fighting against the Corpos on Denon... well, Valery couldn't blame her. She wasn't one to approve of vigilantes or people doing their own thing like this, but Denon was a very different kind of planet.

Corrupt and almost evil to its very core.

"I'd like to learn more about what you were able to do," Valery said, as they moved into the hideout. "I often have jobs that need people with your skill, so it might help me get a better picture of you." She had no idea if Vess had any desire to work with a Jedi, but it was worth a shot. Skills like hers were a rarity, and too many missions recently would have gone better with a decent slicer on the team.

Once inside, Valery bent forward and began squeezing the water from her hair. This was perhaps the only time she regretted letting it grow this long, but the beauty outweighed the pain. Rising up, Valery tied her long brunette locks back into a ponytail and let out a soft sigh.

Her clothes were still drenched, but the only thing she wore underneath her jumpsuit was a bra.

"I... should have also introduced myself." Valery blinked and turned around with a sheepish smile, "A pleasure to meet you, Vess. I'm Valery." She reached out with a hand, but it was shaking a little. Out of the rain and without adrenaline, the wet clothes made her feel cold.

Vess smiled and accepted the shaky hand, realizing why it was shaky. "Nice to meet you, Valery. Uh, let me grab a towel, hang on." She jumped up and darted into the back room. The space was small, barely able to fit two people comfortably, with room for a couple of chairs and a table. The back room she ran into was just big enough for a bed and a shower.

A few moments later, Vess reappeared, wearing a black tank top and a pair of grey shorts, and bringing a towel for Valery. "I don't know if anything I have will fit you, but you're welcome to grab anything from my closet." She looked at herself, then at Valery, and coughed, figuring most of her clothes might be a little tight around the chest area for Valery.

Vess sat down, figuring she could provide some insight while Valery warmed up. She took a seat at the table in her 'kitchen' and leaned against the wall. "Nothing fancy, I am a slicer, but a damn good one. Technology—I just get it, always have. It doesn't matter what it is. Like, if you hand me something that's broken, I just kinda know exactly how to fix it, even if I've never seen it before. Same thing with slicing. I understand how the systems work, so I can get through security that would be impossible for most people. Also don't you Jedi types usually frown on crime and such? I mean I'm not against working for anybody if the pay is good. Except the Hutts or the Sith probably both are equally bad, and the chance of a doublecross is huge."

"Thanks, that'd be great," Valery said with a smile before she watched Vess walking off to fetch a towel. It gave Valery a chance to look around, her hands rubbing together for warmth. The hideout wasn't exactly all too impressive, but a hideout that stood out wasn't very good either. This offered everything Vess would need to lay low, and it wasn't easy to find. If Valery was dumped back into the city, she doubted she'd find her way back here.

Soon enough, Vess returned, changed into some new clothes, and with a towel in hand. Valery caught it and briefly looked the other woman up and down. She smirked, then walked off to get changed herself.

As expected, the clothes in Vess' closet weren't meant for her, but it was better than a wet tunic, so Valery picked out a few things and began to dry herself off and change. Some shorts that barely reached halfway down her thigh, and a tank top similar to Vess', but it came short enough to almost look like a cropped top instead, causing her abs to show underneath. The top hugged her curves so tightly, that Valery blinked when she looked in the mirror and saw her chest pop.

For now, it was all she had.

Walking back into the room, Valery was still drying her hair with the towel while she looked at Vess, "We don't exactly condone crime, no, but I could use a good slicer for some assignments. Payment... we'll figure out." She stopped in front of Vess and put the towel aside to dry. "We hire others often enough."

Vess was still leaning her chair against the wall as Valery talked. She closed her eyes and listened. "Fair enough, not like it's any of my business what you guys do. I'm sure there are times when even a Jedi needs to get information. A lightsaber is not well suited to that task, I imagine." She grinned and pushed off the wall, letting her chair settle back on all four legs. Then she turned and looked at Valery, her eyes widening slightly. "Looks like you found something that sorta fits, that's good..."

She tried not to stare but was failing miserably. What the hell do they feed these Jedi, anyway?! Valery's crop top clung to her, showing off well-defined abs, and her more than generous chest. Her shorts left little to the imagination. Vess could feel her cheeks flushing as her gaze traced the lines of Valery's legs. She stood up, her movements a bit jerky, and padded over to her bag, fishing her terminal out of it. Quietly, she returned to the table, trying to shake the vision from her head.

Her eyes flicked over to Valery again, and she swallowed hard before taking a seat. "So," her voice cracked a bit as she put the terminal down and opened it up. She quickly started typing a few things and fired off a message to her contact, sending an encrypted file to them. Within a few minutes, her terminal beeped, confirming a successful transfer of funds. "Oh, I do love that sound. The client just paid me for the job." She looked up from the terminal, her gaze inevitably drawn back to Valery's chest and abs. She was about to say something when her brain reminded her what Valery was wearing.

"So, uh, what kind of jobs are we talking about exactly?" she managed to ask, trying to keep her voice steady.

"I assume yours are more, uh, shall we say, breaking and entering?" she laughed, though the nervousness in her voice was evident.

Valery chuckled, "No, for information gathering, we need the same skills anybody else has." She entered the room, rubbing her hands together to deal with the cold she couldn't stop from showing. As she did, she noticed Vess looking her way, her eyes drawn to the way this outfit clung to her. Valery saw the heat in the woman's cheeks and waited for Vess to meet her gaze again, before flashing her a smirk.

A way to tell her that she noticed.

Reaching for her terminal, Vess worked on finishing up her last job while Valery leaned back against the wall, her arms crossed in front of her. If she was going to recruit Vess for certain jobs, she'd have to figure something out that'd have her use those skills for good. Perhaps slice into an enemy network or sabotage something.

"Hope all the effort was worth the credits," Valery said with another grin. Running across Denon whilst getting chased was the high-risk part of her job. Looking back up, Valery caught Vess' gaze wandering again and retained her smirk. She pushed herself off of the wall and leaned forward to grab her towel again.

"Slicing into Sith or Imperial networks and databases. Sabotaging their equipment. Missions that can't be solved with brute force," Valery explained, as she raised a hand up through her long, wet hair to fix it in place. "I'm good at breaking and entering, sure, but I got into your first hideout by phasing through the walls. So I don't really need a slicer to get into a building. Just to get into computers and other digital systems."

Valery extended her hand to offer back the towel she had used, "Is that something you could do?"

The smirk was like a stab to the heart, and Vess knew she was busted. Her cheeks turned even redder, and she cleared her throat, trying to regain her professionalism. There was another smirk from Valery as she caught her second look, making Vess mentally scream at herself to stop it and focus. "It's not about being worth the credits, if I'm being honest. It's a challenge. I like to see if I can outmaneuver and outsmart them. It doesn't always work—I've been shot and stabbed—but nothing I couldn't recover from. Never caught yet, though I'm sure one day they will get lucky." She chuckled nervously. "That won't be fun. But that's also why I'm on Denon. The previous planet got a little too hot."

She picked up an old terminal from the table, which hadn't worked for a while, and turned it over in her hands, inspecting it—partly to distract herself from Valery and her outfit. Unknowingly, she used just a touch of the Force to analyze the device with mechu-deru before smiling. "Oh, there's the problem." She popped the back off and made a couple of adjustments to the device. It powered on as if it had never stopped working. "See what I mean? Just a short in the power supply. I just understand tech."

She liked the challenge? While she wouldn't admit it, Valery completely understood that feeling. As an adrenaline junkie, she loved high speed chases or missions that really got the blood pumping. To hear that Vess, a fellow Keshian, felt the same made her smirk spread a little further across her lips. Maybe it was a sign of her people.

"I can't blame you for liking a challenge, but I'd be careful on Denon. A Denon terrorist group once blew up a train here just to try and assassinate me. I've also been hunted by Dark side abominations here and I was attacked in a bar once." Valery blinked as she realized just how many close calls she had on this world specifically. For her, it was a reason to get involved to try and change things.

For Vess? Well...probably just another fun challenge, even if Valery thought it was dangerous.

Having noticed Vess looking, Valery smirked and casually leaned back again, her posture relaxed but arms crossed in front of her, which put further strain on her top. She watched the woman pull out a terminal as distraction, but it suddenly drew Valery's attention just as much. Not because it's an interesting piece of tech, but because she felt the Force swirl around the Keshian.

"Wait," Valery said as she pushed herself off the wall and stepped close enough to look at the terminal.

"You are Force sensitive?"
