These were designed by Sora Talus and Mandal Arms engineers. It was designed due to the fact the droids can't wear armour. So Sora build this instead and added an Ionic dome shield so that the members of Clan Talus aren't easily destroyed by the EMP or Ion attacks. It is a metal shield and thus is better at protecting the wielder from kinetics. Due to it being metal, cryo attacks damage the shield more than usual. It is heavy and thus makes the user slower than usual.
