United Front (Senatorial Coalition)

This is an in-character thread!
United Front
“One Nation. One People. A United Front.”

United Front is a bastion against tyranny and oppression; the war with the One Sith and its allies has left our republic vulnerable. United Front seeks to reestablish The Republic in its truest form, vacate the office of the Prime Minister permanently, and strengthen the economy and military to better the situation of all Republic worlds in these trying times.

Political Policies

The United Front is made up of many individual bodies who represent worlds with a varying degree of autonomy, interests, and needs. Thus the organization seeks to diversify the political process by assuring that worlds are represented, not lorded over, and that each citizen is represented equally.

First, United Front seeks to vacate the office of the Prime Minister and once again reestablish the original seat of the Chancellor; a position for the Republic’s chief administrator, not a political head which serves self-interest.

Second, to assure that The Republic secures its foreign interests as well as those domestic through strong, unwavering diplomacy.

Economic Policies

United Front supports a strong, independent economy that doesn’t blur the lines between private and public sector industries. By promoting consumer confidence, U.F. seeks assure that citizens are not pulling money from their banks out of fear that the establishments--and their wealth--may fall into Sith hands.

Demilitarizing worlds that don’t need garrisons, and cooperating with industry and media to promote consumer confidence is the first step to a strong, independent economy that doesn’t need a government hovering over it.

Defense Policies

Finally, United Front seeks to create a strong, unified military for The Republic to combat her enemies both at home and abroad. Piracy runs rampant, enemies rise around us, and the Jedi have only done more damage than good. Strengthening defensive bonds with our non-belligerent neighbors is also an aim of the organization.

Mission Statement

Once the goals of United Front are met, the senatorial coalition will be dissolved permanently so that no majority may use their authorities irresponsibly to dictate the minority of The Republic.

If you wish to show your support or become a signatory member, please do so in this thread.

Note: As you see above, we are not a communist organization.

Soliael sat in his small senatorial ring with a look of arrogance, confidence, and not lacking in a slight bit of annoyance. His lips were pressed thin, and the odd cloak that he normally wore had been hung over the back of his chair, showing a more formal outfit that had hung underneath it as he sat with his legs up on the rim of his chair.

There wasn't really anyone talking right now, in fact most people were completely silent as they read over the document. A few Senators were riled up, another few were simply looking around with a look of neutrality, and some were even smiling.

Soliael watched them all, deciding that more than a few of them had already proven themselves completely and entirely useless.

For a moment he gazed about the room, then shrugged. He assumed that the others would have something to say eventually, but as a long standing Senator of about three days, he figured he had the biggest right to speak. Slowly the former False God rose from his seat, his back stiffening and an air of authority raising around him. He cleared his throat, amplified by the acoustics of the massive senatorial chamber that had been built here on Ondern.

“Pardon me.” Soliael said attempting very hard not to sound condescending. “But I couldn't help but notice that some of your points are well...for lack of a better term, stupid.”

Some of the other Senators gasped, looking at Soliael as though he had said completely the wrong thing. Soliael cleared his throat and read part of the document out loud.

Lionel Roux said:

“If you think that a Chancellor will be any less self serving than a Prime Minister, you've clearly never operated within the confines of a democracy. I'm going to go ahead and say that every single Senator in here is present, partially, because of self interest. You don't enter politics without a hint of ambition and self service. Besides, to claim that The Republic's Chancellors have always been beacons of hope and public service isn't just propaganda, its an outright lie.” Soliael pulled from memory more than a few chancellors who if they hadn't been outright corrupt, and certainly leaned towards their own interests. Though he hardly blamed them for that, it was only natural.

Taking another breath Soliael read again.

“Fantastic idea.” Soliael said deadpan. “If we weren't in the middle of a war.”

“Unfortunately, Senator, every world is at risk. This was proven time and time again by the One Sith. They first took the Jewel of the Galaxy, then they took Alderaan, then they took Manaan, and then they took Kashyyyk. Half of these worlds weren't located on the border with the Sith, they weren't where Borleias is now or half a dozen other worlds. They were deep in Republic territory, removed from the Sith, yet they were still attacked and taken. The reality is that every world is in danger, and demilitarizing during the middle of a war isn't just idiotic, it's shooting yourself in the foot then handing your enemy the gun.” He paused for a moment then looked up. “Though cooperating with Industry is a fine idea."

Scanning the document once more he frowned, then started to look very angry. “Then we come to the last, Senator. The thing within this proposal that's not only ignorant, but a downright insult.”

Lionel Roux said:
and the Jedi have only done more damage than good.

“It's an off handed comment to be sure, but one that strikes at the very core of the Republic.” He frowned, then looked up from the datapad. “Some of you know my Wife is a Jedi Master, some of you may not. So I cannot deny that I hold a bias in this matter, but I think I come from a point of logic when I say that the Jedi Order is the only reason that the Republic still stands.”

Some of the Senators shifted around rather nervously. “At the forefront of every battle, at the peak of every planets defenses, at the vanguard of every army, there has been a Jedi. Whether it be Padawan, Knight, or Master, they have been there Every. Single. Time. He enunciated every word, stabbing it like a dagger.

“They've not always won, no, but they've always been there. Without them countless lives would have been lost. Without them a dozen more worlds would have fallen. Mine, yours, perhaps half the people in this room would find themselves representing nothing.” There was a bad taste in his mouth. “And now you're going to insult them? Not even directly. You put an off handed comment about how they've made things worse, without explanation or justification. That alone, Senator, is enough for me to stand up and speak.”

He looked around the room for a moment. “Measures like these are passed on merit and respect. You do not gain respect by insulting the people who have defended The Republic for decades.”

With that Soliael sat himself down.

Meanwhile totally oblvious to what was going on in the Senate…

Max Rumor could stand behind a United Front!

Of course, right now he happened to be standing behind his pretty Twi'lek assistant while he rubbed her lekkus, but in any case, he would momentarily finish up with Gia and make his way from his hotel to the Dilbana Radisson where a Republican political conference was underway. There also happened to be a holocomic con going on at the popular hotel, so to find the location, all Max had to do was to follow the humans and aliens in polyester superhero costumes, flimsy masks and chain mail bikinis.

The Cathar politician was ultimately here to attend the first gathering of the United Front, a committee of like-minded bureaucrats who sought to transform the Republic from the inside out, literally removing the Prime Minister from office and installing a Chancellor.

This small detail of Chancellor vs. Prime Minister meant little to the pink, feline alien. The who was more important than the what in this circumstance. The United Front needed someone charismatic, eloquent, innovative and well… administrative. Not this current human-snack of a woman who was xenophobic, technophobic and paranoid.

No more of isolationism for the Nak Shimorians, thought Max as he strode into the banquet hall and found his way to a round table which was reserved for the three other Senators he was able to meet. He sat down, lit a cigar and stretched his long legs. The waft of a roasted Bantha sirloin hit his nostrils, and he was momentarily distracted by the buffet line, but he ordered a scotch instead and waited for his companions.

Faith began reading the latest proposal before the Senate. There were days that were hard on her eyes all the reading, she sometimes wished for an implant that would just load the latest document for immediate understanding.

But that could lead to sensory overload as well.

The Senator from Eshan had a proposal.

By the time she got to the bottom she understood, or thought she did what the Senator wanted to do.

Get rid of the Republic and replace it with, the United Front.

Faith just sat there. Everyone had their own idea of what the Republic should be, and many were willing to put their ideas down for others to peruse, and then others were willing to remain behind the curtain.

What were the differences being offered within this proposal, if the United Front could offer this entire boost to economy, and rising military, why could they not doing it within the Republic now.

And what was the difference between a Prime Minister and a Chancellor wasn’t it merely just a title? Weren’t the powers of the office still the same?

The comment about the Jedi. Her Aunt was a Jedi, her Cousin Garith was a Jedi, his wife was a Jedi this remark struck a chord. Had they done more damage than good?

What did they mean by this? In what way more damage than good?

And why couldn’t they strengthen bonds with the non-belligerent neighbors right now?

But now this last statement was ominous to her.

“Once the goals of United Front are met, the senatorial coalition will be dissolved permanently so that no majority may use their authorities irresponsibly to dictate the minority of The Republic “

If she had only heard this last statement she would have thought of the Empire.

“We twist words to fit our cause” Good thing she was still in her apartments reading this, preparing her words gathering her thoughts. Maybe she could call in sick today.

Cecily carefully examined the words scrawled throughout the United Front Coalitions political manifesto. She chewed the inside of her lip as she followed along carefully, making note of the points on which she concurred and dissented. She was not sure if there was much merit in the restoration of the post of Supreme Chancellor.

The very mention of a "Supreme Chancellor" could often incite widespread public upset. It have been centuries since Sheev Palpatine had ruled the galaxy as Chancellor and later as Emperor, but some wounds never quite healed. The preferred the heavily checked power of the Prime Minister to the largely unleashed authority of the original Supreme Chancellor from the days of the Old Republic.

Still, as her eyes went further she saw something that drew her in completely.

Lionel Roux said:

At this line, Cecily stood slowly, still reading the document to the end before looking up to speak. "It is the opinion of the delegation of Onderon, that the United Front Coalition has made several common sense proposals for the advancement of the Galactic Republic and it is our opinion that we would be remiss to wholly ignore their recommendations," she was still scanning the document, choosing her words very carefully, "while we exercise caution on several matters, Onderon endorses the United Front Coalition's stance on defense and provided limited endorsement to all other areas of concern."

She ignored any muttering that would follow her input before turning and exiting the Senate rotunda to consult with her staff in order that she might make recommendations to this new caucus to secure more support among their colleagues.

"Ah. Here comes another coup attempt," Gen commented, reading over the proposal on her datapad. She was at home today and was really hoping for just one moment to not think about politics. Even the Raven needed some downtime from the procedures and quarrels of the government. "Get this: 'chief administrator' versus 'political head'. That's loaded.

"Oh, and if you scroll down here... 'the senatorial coalition will be dissolved permanently so that no majority may use their authorities irresponsibly to dictate the minority of the Republic'." Lasedri sniffed with derision. "So, what is this saying? These senators proposing this government overhaul will voluntarily resign? Or wouldn't that mean the majority of the Senate would resign if this is accepted? Perhaps the entire Senate? A majority eradicated from a democratic institution--that makes no frakking sense. But! note that there is no requirement for our dear new Supreme Chancellor to leave office. This proposal contradicts itself if their reasoning for removing the PM is because they think I'm too powerful as it is. Either that, or they're just that ignorant of these gaping holes in doctrine."

Her feed was soon updated with the words from one Senator [member="Soliael Devin Talith"]. Geneviève tepidly applauded his straightforward approach, glad to see this agenda met with opposition out of the gate. Of course, the Prime Minister could not voice her concerns at this time without being accused of selfish ambitions. She knew these types. They would jump on that opportunity in a heartbeat.

"And we're just getting started here." On to more dissection.

Lionel listened quietly as the Senator from Borleias and the Senator from Onderon spoke. The Echani walked forward with the support of his cane, a small crowd of aides and junior senators had gathered around the aged man. He had somewhat of an infamous reputation around the Senate chambers and wasn't unknown for his rather boorish attitude in the face of opposition.

The Senator from Borleias was not a man Lionel had seen before, a man who made many comprehensive points but which Lionel felt were unfounded...

"Democracy," he cleared his throat, "where mass opinion justifies any means so long as fifty-one-percent agree."

A rather puzzled look struck the Echani's face. "Remind me again, Senator. Is this the Galactic Democracy?" He shook his head, "No.. Doesn't sound right. Perhaps it's the Galactic Commonwealth?" His cane pressed sharply against the ground as he stopped. "I believe it's actually the Galactic Republic." He nodded to himself assuredly on the matter.

"It's a common mistake and one responsible for most if not all of the past coups and civil wars within the Old Republic." Lionel didn't hesitate to continue with his minor retort on a rather specific issue, one of the many his fellow senator decided argue but the Echani would digress.

"A Republic is simply a form of government in which a leader is elected to run the administration of the legal body, uphold the law, and assure that government functions are lead by capable administrators and within the confines of our legal system." The other Senators sat around quietly, a few silently agreeing and others muttering in disagreement at the very thought.

Taking two steps forward, "Democratic elections are fine... That's merely a system in place, but a true democracy is a vessel for dictatorship when people prefer the grandeur of a brilliant autocrat over that of several mediocre, elected officials."

"I understand the appeal of romanticizing the Jedi, or to stack armies like bricks and place them on every world regardless of the logistics involved. Yet it saddens me that you would use the phrase 'confines of democracy' in which the governing entity is, albeit rarely upheld as such, a Republic."

With that said Lionel's eye struck a familiar face in the form of the silver-haired Lady Adasca.

"To his credit, he's right about most of this," Gen commented as the feeds updated. Unbeknownst to the galaxy, she had been the writer of a much-lambasted piece that supported Roux's summary of pure democracy. "However, he seems to be dismissing the majority's voice completely. Sowing the seeds of empire in another fashion.

"Now, demilitarizing worlds--that would sound effective, say, for a planet such as Concord Dawn. But I know you, Roux. You wanted high-population worlds demilitarizedhttp://starwarsrp.net/topic/53449-optimism-opportunity-act/." Coruscant. Alderaan. Manaan. Just a few of the names of worlds that had been pulverized by the Sith invaders in the past eight years. "It only makes sense to take over an economically valuable world. Removing garrisons from such planets would be an unfathomable blunder.

"And the Jedi..." Well, that was not something she could solidly take a stance on. They had been possibly the most controversial element of the Republic--even the Republic's government in the past--but now Gen had realized a value to them. Or was she putting personal feelings first?

The Prime Minister decided to make a call to her only friend. The one and only [member="Corvus Raaf"].

Kay-Larr

Sphaera Tea Company Owner
Kay sat with some of the others and read over the document. The whole thing gave her a bad feeling, especially when it spoke of disarming planets, having a Chancellor instead of a Prime Minister, and of course the remarks about the Jedi. What was to become of them? Would they just be kicked out of the Republic or worse? She herself was a Jedi, but she kept that secret hidden from everyone in the Republic and from almost everyone outside of it. It wasn't as though she was very powerful anyways to warrant suspicion.

Being the Senator of a trade planet, the economy of Commenor was as strong as ever. Though as Kay was newly elected, it had been the results of her predecessors. It was up to her to keep it that way.

She got to her feet after Lionel spoke. "I think that while well intentioned, there will need to be a lot of clarification on these talking points in order for others to better decide if they wish to choose to support such an initiative or not. There is much within this document that is open to interpretation which is why some like myself question it."

Within the plain, dimly lit chambers of the new Senator from Cyrillia, a sharply-adorned figure sat before the only other piece of furniture in the room, a modest desk of utilitarian fabrication. The previous decorations of the office had been dispensed with, the garish colors and arbitrary designs of the Gungan Senator had been a disgrace to the regal building, and her staff had been only too happy to relinquish them to the waste receptacles, even traveling halfway across the city to distance themselves from the filth.

As she placed the datapad down on the desk, a short, clawed finger covered in small, pale green scales came up, tapping the lip of its owner. Once. Twice. Three times. Then it was replaced upon the desk, dark eyes following it down to the datapad lying there. The Falleen woman stared at it selectively, eying the passages she had highlighted, tossing her head back and forth at the more amusingly naive clauses. In her new duties, drivel such as this was expected, but she had not thought it would be so obtuse and so soon upon her ascension.

From within her Senatorial robes, the woman retrieved a small chain of items, symbols carefully cut within their surfaces. It occupied her hand for a time, her rough claws tracing the symbols within the small stones, focusing on the outline of the third object more so than all the rest. She closed her hand around it, and with it her eyes, letting her mind empty, letting the will of another flood through her. When she opened them, and stared once more at the datapad, passages spoke to her with renewed meaning, their messages clear.

She allowed herself a smile, passing the chain back into her robes. The hand withdrew, and as she brought it up to her eye level, she snapped the fingers together. The door opened so swiftly, feet shuffled so silently, that before the Falleen had lowered her hand the form of her assistant was there at her side. The Falleen gave no indication of her awareness of the newcomer, speaking to the room as if almost to herself. "I suppose this Senator Roux will want a response to his statement. After all, he put so much time into it, it seems a shame to let it go to waste. Let us send him a letter, why don't we?"

"Yes, m'lady," the assistant replied automatically, and suddenly a datapad and stylus were present and held ready. As before, the Falleen gave little indication, and simply began dictating her letter, the stylus scribbling down her every word.

To the Honorable [member="Lionel Roux"] of Eshan,

I recently received the manifesto you have named as the United Front, including the paltry number of signatories. Although I regret I cannot sign my name on your document, I find many of the ideas tantalizing. Some of them show true potential, and I would like to assist you in bringing these forward to fruition.

Firstly, let us discuss the nature of the office of Prime Minister. Though you decry the position as a self-serving political head, I must ask you to consider the implications of a stronger authoritative body. Would not a reinstalled Chief of State undermine the equal representation you seek so highly? A strong executive can be disastrous in the wrong situation, and with an improper balance of power the entire foundation of the Republic could well be lost. I think you will agree with me when I say that the figurehead position of Prime Minister suits the political climate, it may simply be prudent to find a different occupant for the duration of the One Sith's campaign against our dear Republic. Someone a bit more intimate with the realities of war, no?

In regards to the economic policies of the United Front, I applaud your efforts to maintain a strong balance within our industries, and work closely with corporations that serve Republic interests. In times of war, our staunchest allies are those who contribute to our war machine and keep the rhythm of normal life going uninterrupted upon our many diverse Republic worlds. It is also imperative that we maintain the security of our industries, something you addressed in terms of banking industries. Surely a Republican agency to manage the various banking industries during the wartime, and keep them safe from falling into the hands of those who would do us harm, would be appropriate here. An empowered, carefully regulated body to watch over the financial securities of our society, populated by the finest beings in our banking industry today, such a device would keep our Republic's economy strong and untouchable by our enemies.

Finally, in your discussion of the military, you mentioned the effectiveness of the Jedi in safeguarding the ideals of our Republic. How miserably they have performed in their tasks! In our latest efforts against the Sith, the Jedi were barely able to hold their own. Consider what would happen if we had effective leadership of these fine warriors? Perhaps it would be best if this strong, unified military you propose had direction of all military assets within the Republic, including our Jedi Masters. With an efficient and effective body of leadership coordinating our efforts, we would stand tall against the One Sith in future battles and perhaps even turn the tide of the war against them.

Consider these suggestions as the basis for future legislative efforts between the two of us. I look forward to your response, and to formally establish our working relationship in the Senate.

Respectfully,
The Honorable Lady Senator of Cyrillia, Sankt Yora.
