Japanese Zeroes in WWII weren't actually called Zeroes very often by US forces. They were actually called "Zekes" more because "Zeke" or "Zekes" could be said faster and more quickly than "Zero" or "Zeroes" in a pinch. It was also to differentiate between the plane it was for and the number to make communications clearer.
Traditionally, the Japanese Emperor had literally no power militarily until the modern age prior to WWI and WWII. He was only a political and religious figurehead.
