  • Koshûtaral Sentinels: These omnipresent defenders hold dominion over defending this vast academy. There is at any time a full Vigil to multiple Vigils defending this structure, the size of the detachment changes with the needs at the time.
  • Force-Infused Barriers: Powerful barriers generated through Sith Magic and the Dark Side of the Force that repel unauthorized entry and prevent the use of Force powers near key locations, especially in high-security areas. These specialized dark wards, and arcane barriers are woven into the bedrock of the academy are invisible to the naked eye, but any unwarranted Force-sensitive intruder and Jedi will feel an overwhelming resistance as they approach, often causing physical and mental strain. When utilized these can disrupt Force powers causing a significant advantage for non-Force users or the well-trained Sentinels who can bypass them with their own dark rituals.
  • Automated Defense Systems: The academy is extensively outfitted with kyber infused automated turrets, droid sentinels that are programmed to detect intruders and respond with lethal force. These droids and weapons from the Kainate are enhanced with Sith technology, and some may be imbued with Dark Side energy, while others may make use of voidstone, or Tal'Beskar making them resistant to the Force. The mountains around the structure hold hidden turbolaser cannons, point defense laser, and missile emplacements. These systems can be set to trigger upon detecting intruders and can distinguish between authorized personnel and enemies. These defenses include the X13 Paladin-series Synthmarines, ARAC-6 "Irontide" Spiderbots, C1 Security Drones, and the Mark I and Mark II variant "Scourge" War Droids.
  • Sith Alchemical Traps: Throughout the entire academy are dark, cursed traps embedded into the academy's structure, often hidden within floors, walls, and ceilings. These traps are powered by Sith alchemy and activated by the presence of intruders or specific triggers by its defenders. They may release toxic gases, ensnare intruders in inescapable energy fields, or summon horrific dark creatures designed to trap or consume intruders.
  • Shadow Surveillance Networks: A vast, complex surveillance network covers the entirety of the academy. These include a massive amount of uniquely designed shadowy IBIS Drones, and covert Agzonûboj-type Probe Droid equipped with surveillance equipment, a huge network of cameras across the entirety of the academy, as well as advanced Force-sensitive sensors designed to detect the presence or use of light side abilities. These machines have the ability to track and record every movement within the academy grounds and can alert the Sentinels to any unusual activity or unauthorized presence. This surveillance system makes it nearly impossible to move undetected within the academy, ensuring that even the slightest disturbance is quickly spotted and dealt with. These systems are connected directly to the Bloodwatch Spire for immediate action.
  • Dark Side Energy Storms: Dark Side energy storms constantly loom overhead in the clouds above, streaming with arcs of lightning created through ancient Sith rituals of destruction, these storms can be directed to sweep through sections of the academy in the event of a siege or attempted invasion.
  • Internal Lockdown System: A fail-safe lockdown system installed throughout the academy that can seal entire wings or rooms from the rest of the structure. Once activated, all access points to the sealed areas are closed, and the areas themselves can be flooded with deadly toxins or energy pulses. Some sections may even be converted into temporary holding cells or containment zones for Force users, neutralizing internal threats. The unique system is highly effective for controlling internal uprisings, suppressing intruders, or isolating specific areas until reinforcements arrive. The system also works on a hierarchical clearance level, meaning only certain Sith Lords and Commanders have access to override it. The system utilizes:
  • Dark Warding Stones: Ancient Sith stones, and statues scattered across the academy, often hidden within its deepest chambers. These stones have been imbued with powerful wards that amplify the academy's protective aura, preventing teleportation spells, cloaking and force aura suppression from working in specific zones.
  • Infested Waters: Those who would scale the mountains and attempt to swim through the body of water around the base of the academy find before them a daunting task. The waters are stocked full of Miri Kuiaisiri and Subsumed Cetus, beasts that will kill anything that falls within their reach. These monstrous creatures are coordinated by a force of beastmistresses of the Maszlaime Jeviso. They retain the ability to control the swarms of monsters within the waters, and are specially trained to coordinate them in battle, to kill anything that touches the water.

The story of the Varanin Academy begins far in the past.

It was once simply known as the Sith Academy of Dromund Kaas underneath the Second Sith Empire. This place trained loyal Sith in service to the empire for much of its existence, until the empire fell. It found itself reduced into nothing more than an abandoned ruin when the nation that built it fell. This place would remain as nothing more than a ruin until the Sith Order's reclamation of the Sith Holy Worlds of Dromund Kaas, Korriban, and Ziost forging them into a new vassal state. This vassal state was commanded by the mighty forces of the Kainate. Darth Prazutis, Dark Lord of the Sith, and Shadow Hand of the Kainate was named Sovereign of Dromund Kaas.
Dromund Kaas became the subject of a massive restoration effort and the test bed that spread across the planet in vast numbers. In order to undo the influence of the Ashlan Crusade extensive terraforming, efforts were made and in time the world rose far surpassing the glory it held even as the capital of the Sith Empire. It was at this time that the ground of the academy became the central focus of a bold new project to create not just any academy, but something unlike any other. Plans were drawn up for something extraordinary, something that stands out against all other places of learning that one might go to study the ways of the Sith. The designs that were drawn up required an immense logistical effort on behalf of the Kainate.
The full economic power of the Kainate was turned towards the construction of this huge complex. The grounds in the area that would house the academy were extensively shaped, while innumerable number of droids and slaves were brought to bear to build it alongside alchemists, sorcerers and many others. What followed was a magnificent achievement unlike virtually anything seen before it, a true bastion and a place of learning for those who desire the dark side of the force. Many areas within the structure are named after famous Sith Lords through modern history to honor their accomplishments and recognize their greatness. It swiftly grew to become one of the single largest academies rivalling the Kor'ethyr and the Jutrand Sith Academy. Once it was finished it was named after one of the greatest Sith Emperors in modern history known as Ashin Varanin, it became known as the Varanin Academy.
