Braze's breath hitched as the cold pressure of strangling tentacles gripped tighter, pulling him deeper into the crushing depths. His hands scrabbled against the slick coils, fingers digging in with a savage desperation. The carefully sharpened points of his nails—blackened with a strengthening polish—sank into the flesh, aiming to tear and rip at any vulnerable spots he could find. Every movement was deliberate, vicious, and desperate. His teeth bared in a feral snarl as his mind anchored onto one clear objective.

The waves churned violently above him, but Braze's fury turned inward. He twisted his body, teeth flashing as they bit savagely into whatever part of Saya's form he could reach, tasting the briny mix of blood and sea. His jaws locked with feral intensity, the taste of battle driving his movements. His mind, however, was locked on something more lethal—Sentry .

Through the chaos of the swirling ocean, he reached for it with the Force. His focus narrowed, centering on the small blade strapped to his hip. Sentry ignited with a flash of searing light beneath the water, its humming, deadly glow cutting through the darkness. The blade began to twirl, a precise instrument of death that Braze commanded without mercy. It sliced through the ocean, moving with lethal grace, a predator seeking flesh to rend and tear. Its sharp edge carved through the water, its point aimed directly at Saya's form, intent on puncturing and perforating with cold, mechanical precision. The weapon worked effortlessly beneath the waves, its path relentless as it hunted its target trying to remove the tentacles that held Braze Trapped.

Saya snarled as the boy’s teeth bit into her flesh, green blood clouding the water. She had planned to drown him slowly, but the little beast was being so unruly she decided she was better off killing him now. One of her tentacles wound its way around Braze’s neck, squeezing tight.

The brat grew even more desperate. Saya was forced to defend herself from Sentry, Braze’s disembodied lightsaber, which began to viciously attack her. My, you’d make a fabulous Sith! she thought to herself, swiftly activating two of her three red lightsabers. Unlike Oukranos’, her blades were able to operate even when submerged in water. She fought off Sentry’s slashes and stabs with the control and skill of a master, her tentacles lashing out like whips with every strike. All the while, she kept up her stranglehold around his throat…

Kass saw Braze disappear into the water. Her first instinct was to dive after him—yet she felt torn between the boy and her ailing husband. No! She couldn’t hesitate to save a child’s life. Not even for love.

She swam down into the depths, searching frantically for Braze. It was too dark to see. They were running out of time. Panic weighing like a stone in her belly, she closed her eyes, seeking serenity in the Force. Focus. Find him…

A shape shot past her. She opened her eyes and realized it was Oukranos diving into the water. Kass immediately followed him, catching up rapidly.

First she saw the underwater glow of lightsabers in front of them. Braze was fighting Saya, but the Sith Lord had the upper hand over the Padawan.

Oukranos headed straight for them, utterly intent on his target. Afraid of what he might do in his current state, Kass used the Force to slow him down. <Oukranos, wait!>

He struggled violently in her grip, one hand reaching out toward Braze and Saya. The Sith Lord’s third lightsaber was torn free of its clip, the red blade igniting. Saya didn’t have a chance to react. In an instant he sliced through her body, cutting her in two.

Kass rushed to Braze, seizing him and dragging him up toward the surface. Oukranos followed, still holding the red blade.

Braze fought with everything he had. His strength was slipping away with every passing moment, and the vice-like grip around his neck made his head throb, as if it was going to burst. His vision blurred at the edges, darkness creeping in as he fought to stay conscious.

Two red blades slashed through the water toward him, and he was barely managing to fend them off with Sentry. His boot blades scraped desperately against Saya's flesh, trying to find some kind of purchase. His eyes stung from the saltwater, and the underwater world around him was becoming a swirling mess of shadows. But he wasn't giving up—not yet.

His lungs screamed for air, but just as he thought he was about to black out, he saw it—a third lightsaber igniting nearby. If he could, he would have gasped. Through the hazy water, he caught sight of a familiar figure.

Oukranos!

The dark, churning water suddenly thickened with blood as Saya's tentacles slackened around him. Oukranos' blade had torn through her, cutting her in twain. Braze felt the crushing grip loosen, and for a moment, everything slowed. Some of Saya's tentacles still hung onto him, twitching as her body was torn apart, but the fight was seemingly over.

With a final surge of strength and assisted by Kass, Braze pushed upward, breaking through the surface of the water. He gasped for air, coughing and sputtering as he greedily filled his lungs. The cool air hit him like a shock, and his body trembled. He blinked through the stinging saltwater, trying to clear his vision as he took in his surroundings.

Much to Kass’ relief, Braze gasped for breath when they reached the surface. She held onto the Padawan as they began swimming back toward the shore, giving him time to adjust and checking him for injuries before letting him go.

Oukranos followed them. He appeared to be once more in control of his faculties, though he was noticeably quiet. She kept an eye on him and the lightsaber hilt still clutched tightly in his hand.

They reached the beach. Kass flopped onto dry land and, for a time, simply laid there. Oukranos dropped to his knees nearby, out of breath. They were all exhausted from the ordeal.

Is everyone okay?” Kass asked, brushing sand from her hide. She reached a tentacle toward Oukranos, not quite closing the distance between them.

He looked at her, his eyes glassy. “I’m sorry,” he said between breaths. “I… let her get to me. My actions put you in danger.

Kass immediately wanted to protest that it wasn’t his fault and he had nothing to be sorry for. But she sensed that Oukranos had more to say, and it would be wrong of her to interrupt.

He opened his hand, letting Saya’s lightsaber roll onto the ground. Then he turned to Braze. “I apologize to you too, Padawan. I set a poor example by losing control over my emotions. A student should never have to fear a master.” His voice faltered. “They should be able to trust in him always.

Suddenly it all stopped. Oukranos coughed as the chokehold suddenly loosened, bleary eyes glimpsing a short yet robust figure leaping down into the ditch. It was Master Farlander, wielding his orange lightsaber like a scythe. He had already killed one of the three tormenting Brides—the one whose tentacle had been wrapped around Oukranos’ throat—with a toss of his blade.

You saved Braze’s life,” Kass reminded him gently, before looking to the Padawan to back her up.

Braze was panting when they finally reached the shore. He flopped onto the sand and rolled over onto his back, staring at the sky and enjoying the sweet relief of fresh air. "I'm okay…" he mewled from the sand, his voice barely a whisper. He listened to the conversation between the two, his eyes half-lidding as the warmth of the sun beckoned him to curl up and take a nap right then and there.

However, he perked up when he heard what Oukranos had said. Sitting up, his snowy white brows furrowed in concern. "I'm not afraid of you," he squeaked, panting heavily still. He drew a deep breath and let it out in a slow sigh. "You can't blame yourself for the actions of others," Braze added simply.

"Thank you for saving my life... I… I'm sorry about your saber," he said belatedly, still feeling rather worn and exhausted. Despite this, there was a sense of happiness bubbling inside him for being alive and seeing that the three of them seemed to be okay.

"She won't like... regenerate, right?" Braze asked, displaying his naivety about the capabilities of their species and the mysteries surrounding them.

Braze claimed not to fear Oukranos, but the squeak in his voice wasn’t exactly convincing.

"You can't blame yourself for the actions of others."

I take full responsibility for my actions,” Oukranos said, his gaze hard. “Saya goaded me, tortured me with memories of the past, but she didn’t rule over me. I could have regained control… I just didn’t want to.

Kass moved closer to her husband, touching his hand. “We’re safe,” she reminded him. “Saya is dead. She can do no more harm now.

Oukranos didn’t speak, but showed his appreciation with a gentle squeeze of his hand. Whatever other issues still lingered, they were best dealt with in private. Braze didn’t need to be dragged into that aspect of their lives.

"Thank you for saving my life... I… I'm sorry about your saber."

Oukranos’ expression softened. “You're welcome,” he muttered. “I can build another. Perhaps one that won’t break when exposed to water…

"She won't like... regenerate, right?"

No,” Kass answered. “We don’t do that. Her wounds weren’t survivable.” Then with smiles she added, “Thank you for your help, Braze. We couldn’t have found Saya without you.

Braze listened, then glanced back over the rolling waves. "Hindsight really is 20/20, huh? Probably wasn't my brightest move…but hey, it got her attention." He sighed, shaking his head with a faint smirk. "Kinda sad, though—dying with the realization that her personality was her worst feature." He seemed to perk up quite a bit at the confirmation that she shouldn't regenerate or come back from the dead.
