Victories Big and Small

With his recent selection as the representative of New Plympto, Errreembuhr had been quite busy. Between trips to Alderaan and time spent in Phemiss he’d hardly found the time to work on new designs. There were some in the works, however, larger designs he’d had his eye on for quite some time. And he would need them if today’s meeting with the ruling council of New Plympto went well.

He had been in talks with Xaro and Ment of the council, with his company’s role in the security of New Plympto being the primary point. EODD had been providing their security forces with small arms since his facility had opened for business, and now it seemed they wanted more. Especially with his role within their government growing.

A shuttle had been prepared for him at the landing pads outside of the EODD facility, and though it was large for the sort of trip he found himself on, it would do fine. The visage of Phemiss appeared on the horizon, slowly growing larger as they got closer. It was a familiar sight to the wookiee these days, though he saw his factory and offices as far more of a home on the planet.

Within the city things seemed far more quick-paced than out at his facility. It certainly wasn’t Coruscant, or even Denon, with their sprawling cityscapes and massive skyscrapers, nor was it his home of Kashyyyk, the open plains and sharp, rocky hills of the Nosaurian homeworld a stark contrast to the towering treetops he’d grown up amongst. There were other towns and villages throughout the planet, but Phemiss was the largest and most advanced, and its capital building stuck out in the center above the rest of the municipal and corporate buildings.

Aside from the spaceport near the western edge of the city, the capital building was the only place to land ships within the city limits. Of course there were bare fields on the outskirts, but the municipal landing bays were the best equipped in the city, with crews of droids and local Nosaurians providing a few services to ships that touched down. New Plympto wasn’t a wealthy planet, nor one that offered much in the way of tourism, but its location on the Corellian Trade Spine meant that it often hosted stopping travellers looking to avoid the more crowded hyperspace lanes.

“Phemiss Control to EODD-1, you are clear to land at pad 3.”

The Nosaurian voice over the comms channel drew a nod from Errreembuhr, and his pilot brought them down onto the landing pad. Within minutes the exit ramp was lowered, and the wookiee found himself on the open pad faced by Xaro Blacktree, a ruling member of the council and one of those who had voiced support for him as their representative.

“It’s good to see you again, Errreembuhr,” the aging Nosaurian said, extending a hand his way. “The others are gathering in the council chambers, I decided to escort you in myself.”

“Agreed, a pleasure,” the wookiee replied. He followed as Xaro led the way into the building, guards flanking them and following close behind. Even here the wookiee’s influence could be seen, as they bore weapons that his company had made. The EO-7 was the favorite of their defense forces, after all. “I apologize for the length of time since my last visit, my new responsibilities have kept me busy.”

“As they often do, I’m afraid. And this new duty may have you even busier.”

“If Nores approves.”

Xaro laughed, reverting for a moment to his native Nosaurian. “If Nores approves. She’s a traditionalist, through and through, still set in the old ways. It took a lot of convincing to allow you the sale of land for your facilities, and it took a lot of convincing to get her to even consider this. She would prefer New Plympto to remain dependent on itself for defense.”

“Am I not a part of this planet, then?”

“You are. Your company is. We benefit from EODD and EODD benefits from us. That’s why Ment, Bora, and I have fought her tooth and nail for this.”

“You should be aware I don’t have any fleet designs just yet in production.”

Xaro turned to face him as they arrived at the door into the council chambers. “If this goes well then you’ll have time to begin producing them.”

With a nod, Errreembuhr entered the chamber, faced by Nores, Bora, and Ment in their formal clothing, as well as half a dozen Nosaurian guards, and a few of the other prominent leaders in the city’s industries. All sat around a large round table, a holoprojector taking up the center of the room as light flooded in from massive windows that covered the floor to the ceiling. Xaro took his place at the far side, and Errreembuhr took a seat at a large cushioned chair brought in specifically to accommodate his size.

Nores, the ancient-looking councilwoman, shot him a glare, clearly displeased at his presence, though her expression could be deduced to relate more with the fact that her contemporaries were demanding he play a larger role in the defense of New Plympto, in addition to his role as their representative to the Coalition. She was often the singular holdout.

“Errreembuhr, welcome,” Ment said as he rose from his chair. “Of course, we all know why we are here, so let us begin. Errreembuhr’s company has provided ample resources for our defense force on the ground, but the people of New Plympto still face threats from pirates and raiders. We need ships, and EODD can provide them. Errreembuhr has made promises that his yards can provide us with what we need, at least for now, and at a cost that we can afford. One that we would not get buying ships off-world. I, Ment of the Luckstrike clan, endorse the signing of a contract between the government of New Plympto and EODD for the production of ships for our planet’s defenses.”

As Ment took a seat, Bora Leapfar stood. The eldest of the council, his horns were far longer than any of the others, pale grey scales stretching as he moved.

“With our new place in the Coalition of Alderaan we will need to also provide manpower and ships if our fellows are ever invaded. We don’t have ships of any significance to provide, not even for ourselves. EODD already provides our ground troops with significant amounts of weaponry. They are the natural choice for ships not only for our own defense, but to aid the Coalition as well.”

“I am in agreement with this plan,” Xaro added as Bora took his seat. “I have no long-winded platitudes, only my support. We need ships. Errrembuhr can provide them.”

“Errreembuhr is a foreigner.”

Nores’ voice cut across the room as she stood, fire in her eyes. “I was against a wookiee leading us in the Coalition. I was against a wookiee taking our land for his private use.”

“Private use that has been to the benefit of our government,” Xaro rebutted. “For the benefit of our people.”

“For the benefit of himself.”

The gathered leaders had begun to murmur amongst themselves at Nores’ words. While she was at a disadvantage with her contemporaries, she had long held sway with many of the population, especially those who felt that New Plympto should remain under its own influence, rather than that of foreign interests. There were even quite a few who were against the idea of working with the Coalition to begin with.

“What would it take to earn your trust, Nores?”

Errreembuhr’s question drew eyes to him, and as they watched, he stood.

“The fact of the matter is that this planet is in danger, constantly. The Sith proved they can strike anyone anywhere at anytime when they obliterated Thyferra. The First Order expands constantly, threatening the Galactic Alliance and their holdings in the Outer Rim. There are threats to peace and stability everywhere. I was not born on New Plympto, but I have come to see it as a home. Just as my fellow Wookiees who live in your woodlands and forests. This planet’s resources have breathed life into my company, and in turn, I want to use my company to provide that security to the planet that has taken my droids and I in.”

Nores’ eyes were locked on him as she spoke again. “Then you will have no control over the ships that are produce for the government of New Plympto. Once they are under our control you will have no say in what they are used for.”

“Done.”

His quick agreement seemed to take her by surprise. Nores’ eyes darted between her colleagues, as they all nodded in agreement. She was the only one left. Errreembuhr knew if she refused now, it would only serve to lessen her position with them.

“Hmph. Fine. I, Nores of the Stonesinger clan, support this agreement between the governing body of New Plympto and EODD.”

As Nores sat, Bora stood once more. “Then it is settled.” He moved a hand to a console at his end of the round table, opening a holographic display and another panel where Errreembuhr sat. A touch-pad came online, and with a black stylus, the wookiee signed his name, watching as it appeared up above.

Bora was the next to sign, followed by Xaro and Ment. When finally Nores signed, her name appeared at the bottom of the list, which disappeared as she finished.

“It seems we are finished, then,” Bora stated. “Let this be a step forward for our planet and its relationship with the Coalition.”

“Agreed,” Errreembuhr stated as the gathered stood, shaking hands all around. “If that’s all then I’ll take my leave. There’s work to be done.”

With a few congratulations given by several of the Nosaurians gathered, Errreembuhr departed the chamber for his ship. He had work to do, and designs to put into place for ships. Not only did he need to build his company’s fleet, he needed to build that of New Plympto. And to succeed in both, he would need help.

He would need to expand.
