Roman felt the raw, brutal strength of the Diarch as Reign countered his takedown. It was like trying to wrestle a mountain, the sheer force of the man was staggering. Despite the immense pressure, Roman dug in, refusing to yield completely. Foolishly, perhaps, Reign resisted and effortlessly lifted him a fraction off the ground. The next moment was a blur of motion and a sickening thud as Reign, with a grunt and a surge of power, effortlessly tossed him to the side.

Roman tumbled, the wind knocked from his lungs, but quickly scrambled back to his knees. Frustration, raw and potent, clawed at him. Facing such overwhelming power was daunting, yet he refused to be broken. Gathering every ounce of his strength within the force, a desperate hope flaring within him, he extended his palm towards Reign. It was a reckless attempt to force-push the Diarch, even if it was just for a fleeting second, to disrupt his balance, to gain a sliver of an advantage.

The Diarch slid as he felt the force press against him. Not losing his footing but he slid along the dirt of the practice arena.

Holding his hand up, Reign called a halt to the duel

“That is enough for today. You’ve done well, but you do not want to depend on the force for an advantage. Have you heard of the Ysalamari?”

he wanted the boy to be confident in his skills without the force and he had much to discuss with padawan about his thoughts.

Roman's eyes widened, a flicker of disbelief crossing his features as he realised the minuscule effect his Force push had had. It had taken every ounce of his being, a desperate gamble, to shift the Diarch even the slightest. Thank Ashla Reign had called a halt.

His breath came in ragged gasps as he remained kneeling, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. He supposed it was instinctive, relying on the Force, a tool he'd always known. But Reign was right, this training was about hand-to-hand combat, about honing his physical skills.

Roman shook his head, a mixture of frustration and self-reproach coloring his expression as he slowly rose to his feet. "No, I haven't," he replied, his voice still a little rough. "Is it a fighting style?"

The Diarch called his tunic to himself, redressing.
That done, he looked at the young man. He could see the self deprecation there, he had been upset by his use of the force.

“No, the Ysalamari are creatures. Although, funny enough, the lightsaber form Makashi, which you may be familiar with, is also called the way of the Ysalamari.. but no. Ysalamari are a lizard like creature, from the planet Myrkr. They have developed a rather unique defense mechanism”

he paused, ensuring his talks was being listened to. It was an important lesson and one the Diarch was sure the young Jedi had not been taught.

“Due to the Ysalamari’s natural predator, the Vornskr, hunting through the force, the lizards developed the ability to create a bubble, that repelled the force. Creating an area where the Vornskrs would not be able to touch the force.”

He walked over and got himself some water, tossing the Padawan some as well.

“There were many parties that used the Ysalamari to hunt and kill force users making use of the lizards ability to nullify the force. The Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn for one, and the Yuuzhan Vong utilized them to decimate the Jedi in their invasion of the galaxy. The lizards ability to cut even the Jedi off from the force forced them to adapt. That is why you can not always depend on the Force Roman. It seems the Jedi do not remember this lesson, but you would be wise to remember it, if you take away the force, you are but another man. So you must hone yourself to be better, stronger, faster.. with or without the Force”

Roman listened intently to the Diarch, his mind racing to process the new information. Reign was right, the Jedi Order, in its focus on the Force, had neglected to teach him about these creatures, the Ysalamari, their ability to negate the Force, and the devastating consequences it might bring upon a Jedi. He wondered what it would truly feel like to be cut off from the Force, a sensation he couldn't even begin to imagine. It was an integral part of his existence, something he had always known, always relied upon.

He accepted the water bottle from Reign, a grateful nod accompanying the gesture. "I know..." he admitted, his voice soft. "It's hard not to though. When you've used it for most of your life, it's like a crutch. But I understand the lesson and why it would be important."

Roman's thoughts drifted, pondering the Diarch's words. He had heard whispers of Grand Admiral Thrawn, read tales from long ago, a formidable figure from the Empire's past. But the Yuuzhan Vong were a new concept, a name that hadn't graced the pages of any of the Jedi texts he had read. His Jedi training had focused on the known, the historical, the accepted.

A naive curiosity sparked within him, a desire to understand the full scope of the danger Reign spoke of. "Who is Yuuzhan Vong?" he asked, the question innocent but indicative of the vastness of his ignorance regarding this seemingly devastating force.

Reign’s heart went out to the boy. So noble, so strong, but his training had been missing crucial elements.

“It’s not a who.. but a what. The Yuuzhan Vong are a race of beings from outside of our Galaxy. They invaded many many years ago, and caused widespread destruction. I’m shocked you’ve not heard of them. But such is the state of the galaxy I suppose.”

He took a drink of his own water before continuing.

“The interesting thing about them, is that they are “absent” in the force. Like a void, they caused many problems for the Jedi facing them. Coupled with their use of the Ysalamari and the fearsome Voxyn.. many sentients met their end at the hands of these invaders.”

Roman's brow furrowed, the implications of Reign's words settling upon him like a heavy cloak. Outside the Galaxy? A race that existed beyond the known stars, a void in the Force? It was a concept his mind struggled to grasp, a reality that shattered the comfortable confines of his Jedi understanding. He'd always believed the Force connected everything, that the galaxy was a vast, interconnected web. But this… this was a terrifying breach in that fabric.

He swallowed, the water bottle suddenly feeling clammy in his hand. "Outside the Galaxy?" he repeated, the words barely above a whisper. "But… how?" The question was less about the mechanics of interstellar travel and more about the sheer audacity of it all.

A flicker of hope, however fragile, sparked within him. "They… they aren't still a threat, are they?" Surely, if this Yuuzhan Vong race was so devastating, he would have heard of them. "If they were a threat, wouldn't we know about it? Wouldn't that have been a lesson?" His voice held a hint of desperate optimism, clinging to the notion that this was ancient history, a forgotten nightmare.

The questions the youth was asking were all valid and good, it was anathema to the Jedi, and even the Sith, for a being to exist outside of the force. And outside of the galaxy was logistically improbable.

"No one truly knows, the Chiss were aware of the threat, and Emperor Palpatine as well, but nevertheless, they came."

Reign took a moment to reflect, he had not come across the Vong in his travels, but rumors still persisted.
"Their presence in our galaxy is.. greatly reduced.. I do not think they will be troubling you any time soon.. but that is not to say never again. That is why it is so pressing for you to be able to hold your own. They were a warrior society, the strongest, fastest, and most ruthless opponent you could have ever faced.. and they could take away your advantage."

Roman nodded slowly, absorbing Reign's words. "I understand..." Roman stated, his voice carrying a newfound seriousness. He shot a quick, knowing look at Reign, acknowledging the weight of the information he'd received. His gaze drifted towards the camp, landing on Reign's daughters as they sparred with each other, their movements graceful and powerful. A surge of curiosity mingled with awe filled him. He wondered about the depth of their training, how such young beings could already display such skill and control. The Diarchy's educational system, clearly, was a force to be reckoned with. These girls were destined for greatness, potent figures in the galaxy's future.

Roman's attention returned to Reign, a new question forming on his lips. "Have you… have you ever felt yourself in a situation where you didn't have the Force? Where it was unavailable to you like you said?" he asked, his tone thoughtful. He was acutely aware that Reign was not a Jedi, yet he possessed a level of understanding and power that few Force-users could match. Roman wanted to understand if the Diarch ever was in the situation he was preparing Roman for.
