Roman felt the raw, brutal strength of the Diarch as Reign countered his takedown. It was like trying to wrestle a mountain, the sheer force of the man was staggering. Despite the immense pressure, Roman dug in, refusing to yield completely. Foolishly, perhaps, Reign resisted and effortlessly lifted him a fraction off the ground. The next moment was a blur of motion and a sickening thud as Reign, with a grunt and a surge of power, effortlessly tossed him to the side.

Roman tumbled, the wind knocked from his lungs, but quickly scrambled back to his knees. Frustration, raw and potent, clawed at him. Facing such overwhelming power was daunting, yet he refused to be broken. Gathering every ounce of his strength within the force, a desperate hope flaring within him, he extended his palm towards Reign. It was a reckless attempt to force-push the Diarch, even if it was just for a fleeting second, to disrupt his balance, to gain a sliver of an advantage.

The Diarch slid as he felt the force press against him. Not losing his footing but he slid along the dirt of the practice arena.

Holding his hand up, Reign called a halt to the duel

“That is enough for today. You’ve done well, but you do not want to depend on the force for an advantage. Have you heard of the Ysalamari?”

he wanted the boy to be confident in his skills without the force and he had much to discuss with padawan about his thoughts.

Roman's eyes widened, a flicker of disbelief crossing his features as he realised the minuscule effect his Force push had had. It had taken every ounce of his being, a desperate gamble, to shift the Diarch even the slightest. Thank Ashla Reign had called a halt.

His breath came in ragged gasps as he remained kneeling, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. He supposed it was instinctive, relying on the Force, a tool he'd always known. But Reign was right, this training was about hand-to-hand combat, about honing his physical skills.

Roman shook his head, a mixture of frustration and self-reproach coloring his expression as he slowly rose to his feet. "No, I haven't," he replied, his voice still a little rough. "Is it a fighting style?"

The Diarch called his tunic to himself, redressing.
That done, he looked at the young man. He could see the self deprecation there, he had been upset by his use of the force.

“No, the Ysalamari are creatures. Although, funny enough, the lightsaber form Makashi, which you may be familiar with, is also called the way of the Ysalamari.. but no. Ysalamari are a lizard like creature, from the planet Myrkr. They have developed a rather unique defense mechanism”

he paused, ensuring his talks was being listened to. It was an important lesson and one the Diarch was sure the young Jedi had not been taught.

“Due to the Ysalamari’s natural predator, the Vornskr, hunting through the force, the lizards developed the ability to create a bubble, that repelled the force. Creating an area where the Vornskrs would not be able to touch the force.”

He walked over and got himself some water, tossing the Padawan some as well.

“There were many parties that used the Ysalamari to hunt and kill force users making use of the lizards ability to nullify the force. The Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn for one, and the Yuuzhan Vong utilized them to decimate the Jedi in their invasion of the galaxy. The lizards ability to cut even the Jedi off from the force forced them to adapt. That is why you can not always depend on the Force Roman. It seems the Jedi do not remember this lesson, but you would be wise to remember it, if you take away the force, you are but another man. So you must hone yourself to be better, stronger, faster.. with or without the Force”

Roman listened intently to the Diarch, his mind racing to process the new information. Reign was right, the Jedi Order, in its focus on the Force, had neglected to teach him about these creatures, the Ysalamari, their ability to negate the Force, and the devastating consequences it might bring upon a Jedi. He wondered what it would truly feel like to be cut off from the Force, a sensation he couldn't even begin to imagine. It was an integral part of his existence, something he had always known, always relied upon.

He accepted the water bottle from Reign, a grateful nod accompanying the gesture. "I know..." he admitted, his voice soft. "It's hard not to though. When you've used it for most of your life, it's like a crutch. But I understand the lesson and why it would be important."

Roman's thoughts drifted, pondering the Diarch's words. He had heard whispers of Grand Admiral Thrawn, read tales from long ago, a formidable figure from the Empire's past. But the Yuuzhan Vong were a new concept, a name that hadn't graced the pages of any of the Jedi texts he had read. His Jedi training had focused on the known, the historical, the accepted.

A naive curiosity sparked within him, a desire to understand the full scope of the danger Reign spoke of. "Who is Yuuzhan Vong?" he asked, the question innocent but indicative of the vastness of his ignorance regarding this seemingly devastating force.
