Defensive Wall: The Watchdog-class station is absolutely bristling with weaponry, from heavy turbolasers and ion cannons to tackle capital ships, to smaller laser cannons and rapid-fire mass drivers to handle fighters. In addition it carries a massive complement of missile weaponry, projecting an extra threat to ships that get too close. On top of all this, along with standard shields, it boasts a molecular shield generator, further boosting its defensive abilities.
Fighter Complement: With a massive hangar complex the Watchdog-class can field an overwhelming amount of fighters and bombers, making it not only a defensive structure, but giving it an excellent option for pressing the attack.
Immobile: Without ion engines of its own the Watchdog-class is completely immobile in orbit, relying on geosynchronous tethering to keep it positioned in certain areas key to defending a planet or region in space, meaning that attacking ships can pull back out of range and wait for reinforcements, leaving it unable to fight while its enemy recovers. While it has a hyperdrive installed it is a very slow piece of machinery, allowing for only limited transport across the galaxy.
Boarding: 8,000 crewmates are required as a minimum to operate the main systems and weapons, but a 22,000 strong crew is recommended in order to protect from boarding efforts, which the station is notoriously weak to. A 5,000 strong portion of that 22,000 would be used as a garrison to defend the station, though this is still relatively weak, and crewmates from non-critical systems would be used to bolster this while under attack. Even then, a dedicated assault force could wreak heavy damage across the ship before a significant defense could likely be mounted due to its size and spread of the garrison.
Following the siege of Alderaan and the battles of Balmorra and Kuat during the Sith Empire assault on the Free Worlds Coalition, EODD’s development team began to see the use for dedicated heavy orbital defense stations. Millions of troops were able to land nearly unmolested on Alderaan, and it was the desire of EODD to prevent the same fate from befalling any other system that would see itself free from such destruction. To that end the Watchdog-class station was developed, with a heavy focus on providing a major obstruction to invading forces before they can even put boots on the ground.
Boasting some of EODD’s deadliest weaponry and significant hangar space the Watchdog-class station is a ship killer through and through. The EKC-10 Mass Driver Cannon turret is a massive gun designed to break through shields and armor alike, and the CBM-20 missiles it carries can melt away ships with little effort if they’re allowed to reach their target. For more high-volume fire the station is equipped with a significant amount of heavy turbolasers, quad turbolasers, and heavy ion cannons, increasing its threat to capital ships even further. As for incoming fighters it carries several ways to deal with them, from extensive octuple laser cannon turret coverage to automated rapid-fire mass drivers, even missile pods that carry a variety of warheads for nearly any situation. These are improved as well by the inclusion of heavy turbolasers, which can grab fighters and hold them in place, making it easier to aim at a stalled target.
Weaponry aside, the Watchdog-class station also carries with it several other systems geared towards improving its survivability in combat, including a molecular shield generator and backup standard deflectors and particle shields. Its hull is reinforced with doonium plating, and a missile deactivation transmitter works to end the threat of incoming missiles before they reach their targets. An orbital long-range scanner is also included, allowing it to see ships coming through hyperspace long before they arrive and prepare for an assault in advance. All of these systems and weapons require significant amounts of power, power which is provided via hypermatter annihilation reactor which is held in the central drum structure within the station’s exterior ring.
