SPECIAL FEATURES
Designed for operation by Whiphids. Instruments and labels and operating systems aren't in Basic, levers and handles take greater strength to use, the onboard temperature is frigid, and controls are built for huge three-clawed hands. Basically, good freaking luck taking over and operating this ship if you aren't a Whiphid.
Darn quick. These boats can move a lot faster than your average frigate, which comes in handy for patrol interception and piracy.
Weaknesses:
Low armament. You'll still know you've been hit, but in a capital ship slugging match, Whiphid Raiders are going to have trouble punching their weight.
Very slow hyperdrive. These ships take twice as long to get anywhere as a vessel with a standard Class Two drive, and four times as long as a military Class One. They're FTL-capable, but they're homebodies. Most of their work takes place in and around the Toola system.
DESCRIPTION
Whiphid Raiders are updated and refitted versions of the old Rotoru frigate, a common design. Modified by THI Consortium, a partially Whiphid-owned firm, they represent Toola’s first proper starships. They spend much of their time on the frigid Whiphid homeworld as homes of major clans.
A Whiphid Raider’s mission profile is fairly broad. These ships spent as much time looking for herds of motmot and caraboose as they spend in space. Off Toola, Whiphid Raiders have engaged in piracy, mainly against equal or superior forces. They also serve as a system defense patrol, and can engage with traffic to and from Toola as needed.
These ships have history. The Whiphid shaman Gharak, also known as Velok the Younger, not only procured them but arranged his people's training in starship operation. He used contacts among local rulers, the Dominion, and the Resurgent Empire to procure ships and instruction. An ambitious partnership with the King of Metatron secured a refit contract for old Darkthrone Arialyard vessels. Velok identified the Rotoru light frigate as a durable and worthwhile spaceframe. Human, Vahla, and Whiphid crews modified a number of Rotoru frigates for Velok's purposes. Whiphids graduated from secret training aboard stealth ships to take full control of their new sovereignty mechanism: the Whiphid Raiders.
Internally, Whiphid Raiders can be a little unorthodox: cold air, freshly slaughtered caraboose, tall ceilings, big toilets, a preponderance of pelts, and pre-technological weapons aplenty. A boarder or unwary visitor can expect to get impaled by an antler-tipped spear even before the blasterfire hits.
