- Description: Whisperbirds were large black avians from Csilla. They had red eyes, and typically lived on the ground, though they were not flightless. Their wingspan was among the largest on Csilla at six feet. Though they hunted in forests, it was believed they lived in the ice caverns between the different caverns of the Great Houses. Unlike the Chiss, who were not adapted to Csilla's cold climate, the Whisperbird did just fine in the ice, allowing it to thrive almost anywhere. They were called whisperbirds because the sound of their wings sounded like whispers. They preyed on rodents, insects, reptiles, and other birds. In ancient times, their intelligence and appearance led many of them to be owned as recreational hunting partners and messengers. To this day, garrisons on local Chiss colony worlds and some wealthy VIPs keep a roost of whisperbirds should communications be disabled.

- Religion/Beliefs: It was an important bird in Chiss myth and legend. They were relied on during ancient times to pass along messages. Sometimes, houses would teach their whisperbirds secret phrases that when said by another would indicate for the bird to speak its secret messages. In this way, they could decieve one another if their written messages were intercepted, keeping the true message hidden. It was a piece of middling importance in the Chiss game of Tactica, but could win games just as surely as the Nightdragon or Groundlion.
- General behavior: Whisperbirds nested either in the ground or in ice hollows throughout the caverns of Csilla. Whisperbirds raised off-world often chose the ground over other options. They lived in small colonies of three to four nesting pairs. Their calls could often be heard outside of the trams in the ice caverns of Csilla, echoing for miles and miles as the different nesting groups called to each other. They were hunted at all times of day in the ice caves, but off-world showed signs of being nocturnal creatures. They nested clutches of six eggs which helped it come back form extinction after the destruction of Csilla. It had the uncanny ability to imitate speech patterns to an astonishing likeness.
Whisperbirds were large avians endemic to the Chiss homeworld of Csilla. Black or rarely white feathered with red eyes similar to the Chiss, they were once common pets and hunted for sport in the large subterranean forests of the ice world. After the destruction of Csilla they were considered nearly extinct with only a few hundred of the birds remaining off-world in domestic settings. As a bird of great significance to the Chiss, the Ascendancy Remnant's interim Syndicure and Aristocra moved to have the bird recognized as the Chiss national bird, and breeding programs were put into place to help bring the species back from the brink. It thrived on other Ascendancy worlds and by 900 ABY had been brought out of extinction, though hunting of the birds remained extremely regulated.
