Will You Trust Me

Life wasn't easy. It hadn't been easy for Lyra. But it really hadn't been easy for [member="Kaidan Sroka"]. But, that hadn't stopped him. And that determination is what kept her going. Just a year prior she was regularly beaten, but he saved her. He saved her from that- and while things were rough for them right now, well...

They had each other, at least. And that meant the world to Lyra. Best friends, trying to survive in the evil city.

Granted, the hungry stomachs, the awkward, uncomfortable sleeping, and the terrifyingness of Ethos City, wasn't a very good thing. They were survivin', but barely. She could only hope one day they'd get off this rock of metal and skyscrapers...

But for now? She broke the nutrients bar she had stolen from a general grocery and passed half of it to Kaidan. "It's getting kinda weird out there," she muttered as she took a bite. It didn't have any taste, but that didn't stop Lyra from savoring it still. She shifted as she leaned against the metal inside the insanely small spot that her and Kaidan called home. Heck, most of it was just the makeshift bed... But they had made it work, somehow.

She perked a brow, smiling lightly. He really didn't eat enough. It was a small worry - but [member="Kaidan Sroka"] didn't seem to lose weight so she figured he probably found something when she wasn't looking. She pulled her legs up to her chest as she bit a piece of the bar, chewing and swallowing it.

"I don't know, people seem... Feistier," she commented after a moments thought. In either way, she just shrugged as she listened to the pelt of water on the metal ceiling.

Of course, Lyra was still adjusting to life on the streets. Despite being on them for so long, she was still adapting. Kaidan seemed to know them like the back of his hand - the unfortunate reality that he had been doing it from the beginning of his life.

She gave him a little smirk, nudging him slightly. "I knowwww. This city is crazy but..." She shrugged again, "Maybe it's just me. Just feelin' different, you know?"

She gave a nod, and had the look of a sage on her face. "It's... Too much," she muttered as she bit another piece of the nutrients bar. She sighed as she stared at the bed. If that could be called a bed. "Me too," she whispered after his comment.

"Options? What do you mean, Kaidan?" She wasn't sure if she liked what he meant by options. She had taken up all sorts of gigs - from laundry to droid repair to waitress to... Anything known to man over the past year. And it all ended as soon as her services were done.

A constant cycle. Vicious. And the pay was nothing at best. She stared at Kaidan at his promise. "Kaidan... It's okay, we have each other. That's all that matters, right?" She said as she placed her hand on his shoulder, a soft smile on her lips. Best friends together, figuring out the planet and hopefully... Well, if they could escape the galaxy. Best friends, man, if she wasn't so chicken. She sighed as her mind played out every scene possible.

"We'll figure it out. It'll just take... Time."

She smiled at Kaidan. She loved his attitude. His spirit. She wished she had even an ounce of that kind of spirit. She didn't have that bravery, that passion that burned bright in him.

Her mismatched eyes focused on him as she inhaled. Well, if he was going all in, so would she. She had to haul her half - and no matter how much Kaidan tried to take care of her, she was determined to do just that. And she sure as heck wasn't about to accept no from him. "I'll... Try to find something, too."

She had tried, too. But she was more determined than ever. She couldn't help but smile back at that smile... She couldn't help it as she reached her hand out and held his, giving it a tight squeeze. "You're right,"she whispered.

After finishing the bar, she laid down beside him. "Sooner than you think," she said quietly.

Lyra nearly jumped out of her skin the next morning. Several loud bangs, yelling voices. She pulled herself up, smiling as she realized she was covered by his jacket. Silly [member="Kaidan Sroka"], always looking after her. He needed to make sure he was okay, too. "Kaidan," she said quietly as she peered out the side of the door. Too bad for her she couldn't really get a good sense of whatever was going on out there.

And of course, the rain hadn't stopped. It never stopped in Ethos City. The downpour from the night before continued just as loud, cold, and dreary as ever. She glanced back to him, hopeful that he would wake up sooner than later. She couldn't help but wonder what was going on out there - but she knew better than to leave without him.

It was dangerous, and he had told her plenty of times. Especially in the underbelly where they lived...

Lyra's purple and pink eyes tried to take in whatever was happening outside. It was just hard to see - the sun hadn't come up, the storm was worse and likely to get more worse. In truth, it was rather annoying. She pouted her lip as she tried to decipher what the yelling was about. If she went out she could probably get a better view point. She briefly looked towards her raincoat, but decided against it. No, she'd wait for Kaiden.

She picked some words up, of course. Like androids. Robots. Most of it was some form of cussing, and others complaining about their socioeconomic status. She couldn't really blame 'em, the inequality here... It was sickening. Everyone on this level of the city were struggling. Everyone seemed to have to commit crimes just to get food in their belly. Lyra had been lucky - she was never alone. She had [member="Kaidan Sroka"] as her de facto guardian.

"I'm not sure," she whispered as he finally woke up. She crossed her arms, her hands rubbing the upper part of her arms. "Something about robots and jobs and..." She muttered before she gave a nod as she got quiet, slipping down to her knees as she continued to try to decipher what in the universe was going on outside.

"What do you think it could be?"

"What?" She asked, her eyes staring at Kaidan as she stood back to allow him access to the peep holes. Why should she get her things? Weren't they... It was getting closer. Faster, too, which only made her more nervous. "Kaidan..." She whispered, finally moving to throw her stuff into her large backpack.

To be fair, she mostly packed up their essentials. Food and waters. That was probably the most important things for them. "Why?" She asked quietly, literally jumping as she heard shouting - and begging. Was that a robot begging? Then... What sounded only like a blaster shooting.

Momentary silence.

She gulped as her hands wiggled the window in an attempt to get it open. Finally, after several seconds of struggle, it popped and opened. "It's small, but I think we'd fit," she said quietly as she got it open. Rain was getting in through the open window, likely due to the intensity of the wind.

She grabbed her backpack and tossed it through the window, preparing to grab any other items he may need to get them out the window so they could get going.

"Why," she muttered in a quiet shock. What could the police really be getting from killing innocent people? Or at least, mostly innocent, she guessed. Just trying to survive innocent, she clarified mentally. The panic from the increasingly loud screams and blaster fires only confirmed what Kaidan was saying. Her heart beat quicker, faster in her chest as the realization of what was happening finally clicked.

Finally on the escape ladder platform, she jumped as she heard the officers break into their little home - and heard the blasters. Her wide eyes glanced to Kai. Did... What if they hadn't waken up? She crawled down the ladder, one step at a time as she tried to swallow the fear that was bubbling in her chest. "I don't know..."

Finally, on the ground, she sighed as she crossed her arms. It was frigid, cold. Her fingers already ached from the cold - despite the gloves and the jacket she wore. Her cheeks already were turning red from the collision of freezing wind and rain. "Kai..." She whispered as she nodded, following the love of her life. "What if other people are there?" She said as she gripped her hand in his as she glanced back - watching the city behind her lighting up in a variety of white, blue, and red.

What in the universe was happening? What could they do? She shook her head as she pushed any thoughts - no, she had to protect Kai like he was protecting her. He was all that mattered.

"I don't know... Parts? Maybe they want their metal...?" She wasn't sure what else to say in that regard. Androids could be expensive, right? Lyra wasn't sure. Well, she had no idea honestly. What would the cops want with them? "I mean... We heard about those protests," she said quietly, "Do you think...?"

"I'm scared," she whispered as they moved towards the apartments before he paused. Lyra instinctively jumped as the sound of gunfire rang throughout the cold, rainy morning. "Under the bridge? That... That sounds like a good idea." She nodded her agreement as she held his hand as tight as she could.

Their walk was full of loud yelling, gunfire, and general havoc that cops make when they start busting into neighborhoods. Would they even be safe under the bridge? Would they be safe anywhere on this miserable planet? She shivered as she tried to stay close to [member="Kaidan Sroka"]. He was her only chance. She didn't know the streets like he did... Even if it wasn't fair that he had too.

She let out a tiny, terrified screamed as a man loaded a rifle. "Kai," she whispered as she tried to push him behind her. "Please! Don't shoot!" She begged, her eyes already watering up - even if it couldn't be seen due to the rain that drenched them. "Please, we're just trying to find safety," she practically begged.

Lyra shook her head in confusion - she didn't understand it either. And perhaps part of it was just because she was so disconnected from the current rumblings in the city. Heck, she didn't even really care. She just wanted to make a life with [member="Kaidan Sroka"] and live their lives together.

But nothing could ever be simple, could it? They had to get out. Leave. They would never be able to be happy here.

They... She held her breath as the man seemed ready to trigger any moment. Kai pulled her behind him, and she peered from the side of his shoulder. No, this couldn't happen. Lyra's hands gripped onto Kai's clothing, horrified. "P-please," she practically sobbed as tears gently fell from her eyes.

Who knew what was louder - Lyra's scream as the gun went off or the actual sound of the gun. But the rest happened so fast. The next thing she knew the cop was knocked out by Kai, and they were running. Lyra had instinctively grabbed his hand as they ran.

It felt like forever but when they reached the bridge... And a moment of respite. She gasped to get the air into her lungs. The pins and needles in her sides, the strain in her muscles, made evidence of malnutrition but also a lack of cardio. "Kai," she whispered after she gained some air. Her soft hand gently touched the graze on his cheek, the blue liquid rolling onto her finger. The bluish hue underneath made a revelation.

Not one that she cared about. She pulled him into a tight embrace as she pressed her face into his shoulder, the sounds of sobbing briefly permeating the air. She couldn't lose. "I was so scared, I thought... I thought I was going to lose you," she muttered with gasps.
